"Let's all unite to take Foolz down!"
...Or Vader, if he happened to finish 71 games in 2013!
1. Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies - Very good entry in the series. It does a good job of introducing new characters and still including lots of cameos from classic Ace Attorney characters, without leaning on them too much. The 4th chapter drags a bit and you kind of wish you could skip it, but it sets up the 5th chapter so you understand why it's there. And that 5th Chapter is every bit as good as the end of Trials and Tribulations. (completed 1.5.14)
2. Dr. Luigi - It's basically Dr. Mario with Luigi. There is one new extra mode, Operation L, which is a bit easier than the standard version, but still pretty fun. Other than that it's pretty much everything you'd expect from Dr. Mario. Solid overall but really nothing special. If you like Dr. Mario, and don't have it readily available on another console, you might as well have it for the Wii U. (completed 1.19.14)
3. Katamari Damacy - This is a great timeless game. It's just as good today as it was 10 years ago, and 10 years from now it will still be good. Later installments tweaked the gameplay up nicely, but none of them ever captured just the sheer WTFness and creativity of the original, nor has the King of The Cosmos ever felt quite as regally bizarre. A must-play if you're one of the heathens that missed out on it somehow. (completed 1.26.14)
4. Zelda II: The Adventures of Link - Ouch.... this game is hard. Hard as fuck really. I enjoyed it again. The soundtrack is very good, and the combat is simple, but amazingly well done. Still holds up pretty well too. But I can't really say go out and play it unless you're of the old school yourself. It's just so hard, and old school inflated hard at that. Still it was a great nostalgia trip for me, not having played it since I originally beat it back in the early 90's/late 80's. (completed 1.31.14)
5. Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds - Great Zelda game. I had my doubts, but I really enjoyed being able to just grab any item I wanted right from the start. It really changed the way how I explored dungeons. I wasn't obsessing over finding all the treasure, and as a result I missed a lot. I definitely didn't find it as easy as others too. I died 5 times, so for me the challenge was there. The 3-D effect is possibly the best the 3DS has seen too. (completed 2.23.14)
6. Blok Drop U - This is a real simple physics based puzzler where try to erase all the blocks on the screen except for one, and you must ensure it doesn't fall into a hole while you erase the others. It's a neat idea, but it almost feels like luck plays as much of a role as skill, and I'm not a particular fan of that. Okay for a $2 purchase, but I can't say I'd recommend anyone go and get it. Better cheap puzzle games are out there. (completed 3.8.14)
7. The Last of Us - Absolutely amazing. Definitely in the top tier of games I've ever played. I put it alongside Dragon Quest VIII in that group of games that didn't necessary innovate or do anything new, but everything it did do was done perfectly. After reflecting back on the game I honestly can't find anything to complain about. Maybe a little drag in the middle of the game, but even that's grasping at straws. (completed 3.20.14)
8. Dragon's Crown - Really good evolution of the brawler. The added elements of loot games and RPG, and the addition of a hub really elevated the game from all the others in its family line. Hard to believe it took this long for someone to make a brawler feel fresh again. Still, as good as these things were, at its core it was still a brawler and after a couple hours it was a little tiresome to play for more than 30 minutes at a time. Very good game, but nothing I'm dying to play again soon. (completed 4.4.14)
9. Kid Icarus: Uprising - I want to give this game a 10 out of 10 so much. It just does so many things right. It looks good. It has a surprisingly good story with goofy, but well written characters. Tons of replay value. The problem is the controls. This is one of the worst implemented control ideas I've ever come across. It's not broken, it's just uncomfortable as hell after 20 minutes. And that's unfortunate because this was a game I never wanted to put down, but had to due to hand cramps. If it ever gets a Wii U HD remake that takes advantage of the dual analog controllers, it will be one of the best games ever made. (completed 4.26.14)
10. Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 - There's a lot of greatness here. The art style and music are fantastic. The boss battles are really good. Who can't love the ending? And there's some really inspired ideas in the level design. But I think a lot of the levels are also really bloated, and too often they just feel like a treasure hunt to find all the stars, coins, and flowers. As someone who prefers a platformer to have shorter more focused levels I got bored a lot with this game. It's still a good game, but I don't quite get why people speak as highly of it as they do. (completed 5.12.14)
11. 3-D Sonic the Hedgehog - It's basically just the original Sega Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog.... IN 3-D! Anyway it's as good as ever, and M2 are hands down the masters of 3-D games. I don't know if it's just because they're applying the effect to simpler games, but my eyes don't really feel the fatigue that you get with most 3-D games. Anyway good stuff, though I wouldn't recommend it to any but hardcore Sonic or 3-D fans. (completed 6.2.14)
12. The Legend of Zelda - It really is amazing how well this game still holds up. Pretty basic, but the "go anywhere and figure it out yourself" kind of exploration that this world provides still feels like something that's missing from a lot of games today, the Zelda series included. (completed 6.22.14)
13. Shovel Knight - Damn near a perfect game. It has such a good difficulty curve. Bosses keep getting tougher as you get stronger, as does the platforming. It's nostaligic to the NES era, but still finds way to even innovate just a bit. It's a real wonder why more game developers completely ignored all of the good ideas from the earlier gaming eras. Best indie game I'll probably play this year. I'm ready for a sequel (completed 7.3.14)
14. Mario Kart 8 - After a solid month of playing, I'm comfortable saying this is the best Mario Kart of all time. There's still work to be done, but god this game is fun. Amazing tracks, great controls, beautiful graphics, and solid online gives you everything you need to have a good time (completed 7.3.14)
15. Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition - Amazing Metroidvania game with some extremely challenging platforming. Little light on boss battles, but that's a minor complaint. This is an amazing game. If you haven't played the original yet, by all means hurry and get this version now. (completed 7.6.14)
16. Inazuma Eleven - Pretty fun soccer game though there's a lot that bogs it down. There's so many pointless fetch-quest crap with no purpose than to just fill time, and the story and characters are pretty much every Japanese game cliche you find. But the actual matches are fantastic. Very unique controls and battle system, but they work extremely well. Overall, it's a lot of fun. (completed 7.22.14)
17. Seiken Densetsu 3 - Still a great game, but the SNES era action-RPG is totally starting to show its age. Lots of grinding and difficulty spikes that come out of nowhere. But hell it's still a lot of fun. Still very frustrating how Square never translated this. So very ahead of its time. (completed 8.29.14)
18. The World Ends With You: Solo Remix - Amazing. Wonderful. Even better than the original DS version. If anyone starts gaming with a tablet, consider this game the must-own. Wonderfully complex, and wonderfully WTF just happened. Highest recommendations. (completed 9.11.14)
19. Telsagrad - Average... maybe not even average. At times I enjoyed Teslagrad, but overall I walked away from it wishing I hadn't bought it. There were some good environmental puzzles, and what could have been some fun boss battles. But there were some bad design choices in here (1 hit = instance death) that force you to replay way too much. (completed 9.20.14)
20. Hyrule Warriors - I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed this game. The Warriors gameplay worked well in the world of Zelda, and the play style is a nice change of pace for the series. Really interesting takes on the characters too. It was particularly cool to see Princess Zelda actually leading like a ruler. I can't honestly say the game is a must-play, but it is excellent fan service to Zelda fans and just plain old fun. (completed 10.6.14)
21. Torneko's Great Adventure: Mysterious Dungeon - The first entry of the Mystery Dungeon series still holds up pretty well today. It doesn't have a lot of the bells & whistles like item merging and floor warping, but the core gameplay that makes these games is still there. It's a good reminder that rogue-crawlers are usually at their best when they keep it simple. (completed 10.18.14)
22. Lone Survivor: Director's Cut - Good quality survival horror game. Basically a 2-D version of Silent Hill, to give you the kind of idea of what game it is. It's short, but if it were any longer it probably would have hurt the experience. Good game to play around this time of year (completed 10.23.14)
23. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow - The best of the GBA Metroidvania games, and one of the best out of all the ones made for that matter. The soul system does a good job of keeping combat interesting, and the game progresses nicely so that during the end gane Soma never quite feels as overpowered as Alucard did in SotN. (completed 11.1.14)
24. Super Smash Bros. (3DS) - Good portable version of Smash, and a great taste of what's to come. It does suffer some from the controls and the from the screen size, but not to a degree that it's difficult/unfair/not fun. Not sure what kind of life this will have once the wii U version comes out, but it has a couple unique modes that are a lot of fun and help make it worth keeping I think. (completed 11.11.14)
25. Resident Evil Revelations (Wii U) - The story had me scratching my head, the dialogue made me cringe, and you can definitely see the 3DS's roots showing in this game. All that said, this is still a pretty fun game. Not too difficult, with the exception of that last boss battle that I had to go through about a dozen times or more. I'd recommend it to anyone who hasn't played it yet, if they find it on sale. (completed 11.15.14)
26. Super Smash Bros. (Wii U) - Must-own game of 2014. Doesn't matter if you like fighting games or not. It's Smash, but it's the ultimate form of Smash. Honestly, I have no idea how they'll ever top this. There's just so much good stuff packed into this game, and none of it is just simple weak filler. (completed 12.20.14)
27. Captain Toad Treasure Tracker (Wii U) - It's a neat way of taking a basic simple idea and expanding it into a full game. Well almost a full game anyway. It's fun, and god knows it's cute as hell, but it does feel a little repetitive after a while. EAD deserves all the credit in the world for taking the gameplay as far as they did, but a few of those levels had a very "filler" feel. Still, it's worth picking up. (completed 12.26.14)

1. The Last of US (PS3) Finished 14/02/14
It's a good game, mostly very enjoyable. Seriously think reviewers got it wrong though. OK production values are constantly high, and the story is nice and involving (for this sort of thing). BUT I honestly don't see where all the 10/10s and GOTY awards come from. Oh well, at least I know what all the fuss is about. 8/10
... now then, time for a game-game as opposed to a movie-game.
2. Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (WiiU) Finished 23/06/14
Yay, I beat a game! This is really good. If you enjoyed Retro's DKCR then really this is just more of that same platforming goodness ... and yes you do need more. The game looks stunningly beautiful in HD and it feels even more "alive" than its predecessor in how the backgrounds/scenery is constantly developing/changing. The controls are the one thing which I wasn't entirely happy with but it may be partly my fault because I stuck with one control scheme all the way through and didn't try alternatives. I played using a wiimote alone (holding it sideways like a NES controller) which left a lot to be desired as I had to shake the wiimote to dash (which is something you have to do a lot) and also the d-pad is so small and difficult that it gave me blisters on my thumb. I wish I had a classic controller U, but I only have the Wii version which you attach to the wii-mote and I couldn't even be bothered to look for it. This is a difficult game as far as platformers go. At one point I had close to 100 lives and I finished it with fewer than 20. There are moments when I could easily have put the controller through the TV in frustration. Anyway, there's loads more to do in the game ... I didn't play it the completist way at all. I just beat all the levels. There's tons to discover/collect/unlock and I may go back to try and do more of that ... oh who am I kidding. Anyway 9/10. Onto Monster Hunter
3. Duck Tales Remake (WiiU) Finished 23/12/14
Finished another one, just in time to put it on this year's meagre list. It's a decent game, it's not a great one. Pretty 2D graphics, good helpings of nostalgia, basic gameplay which just about holds up and - as it's a pretty short game - doesn't outstay its welcome. Will try more games like this in the new year.
I limited myself to 52 last year, so I think it'll be pretty easy.

I'm so proud of myself
Just updated with Dr. Luigi. There's really no way to "win" the game, but I've completed the hardest difficulty levels on Retro Mode and Operation L, and have played over 50 online matches without embarassing myself too much. Basically there's nothing left of the game to uncover, so I'm counting it as a win.
Updated with GTA 5!
Great game, slightly overrated like usual. I was expecting more at the end for some reason. Great characters...Trevor is awesome. Weak Soundtrack. 9.1 Rating.

They shot their wad with the first heist. That is why you expected more at the end.
A flawed game, but still better than 8 out of ten of games that come out. Understandably given their budget and lack of oppression from "the man".
