Though with many of the team sports the Olympics isn't really the biggest event so I suppose it doesn't matter much anyway. You could also do something like medals for two scorer and best player, but that doesn't seem to fit too well. I mean no one really cares about those at the proper events that the teams take part in.

They should try to fix that. The olympics is about the worlds best atheletes and most of our countries best atheletes are playing the major team sports, basically the olympics is not for them. I know a gold medal will never mean as much as each respected sports major championship but the olympics can try to entice the worlds best players to have more to compete for.

Can you imagine the TV ratings (at least in the US) for an olympics dunk contest. I think judging a dunk is as subjective as judging some gymnast routine, so might as well do it.

OMG why is Ryan Seacrest on during the Olympics?!

Judging a gymnastic routine isn't really subjective, though. The objective of a dunk is to score, everything else about it is subjective, no? The objective of gymnastics is to do a pre-determined technique within a broader routine flawlessly; it's not really subjective.

It would be amusing at the very least, though.

True but I hear non stop bitching from our announcers about how the judges mess everything up in gymnastics.

LOL Probably not.

Huh, I see that Tennis has most of its stars in the olympics, that is nice. I assume its going to be Federer vs Djokovic as usual when Nadal is not around.

Team sports that have their biggest stars are:

Basketball, Volleyball, Water polo and Handball.

Also in wrestling and judo Olympic gold is the greatest honour

Sucks that boxing has none of the big names, they are used to millions of dollars for their fights so yeah. They need to add MMA.

How come there is no golf?

What kind of name is that. Sounds like an old 80s arcade game.

They need to put more nudity into MMA, rather than more MMA into the Olympics.

It is and it isn't.  What you say is true, but it is judged by humans so there is the human error to account for in the marking (same as a measurement error in the lab).  That is why you have more than one judge, and that is why you get a range of marks (same as why you get a range of measurements in the lab).

When you add the fact that said judges come from certain countries, and thus have vested interest, that adds another layer of subjectivity.

Of course, but it's different to doing something like judging a dunk which is all about showmanship. You could probably develop a dunk scoring system, though. But that might take the fun and spontaneity out of dunking.

True.  It was very cruel on them, and not their fault at all to have been played around with like that.  It wasn't the fault of the Japanese team either though.  They were clearly robbed and it was natural that they would contest the decision.  It was the fault of the judges who overzealously and unfairly penalised them in the first place (possibly to benefit Team GB?)

I don't think it's as bad as you are making it sound, at that point we had like 2 medals and one was a bronze, no golds. GB is like 26th in the medals table without a single gold, although we about to win our first as I type in the rowing. Ah they just won the double coxless skulls.

You know I think they should spice up the archery, make it like laser tag but with arrows and a complex. What's the point of shooting at a stationary circle? Last man standing I say.

Personally I think it should depend on whether the artists are pros or not.  For example I don't understand why it's OK to allow professional basketball players, and tennis players (who already earn ridiculous amounts of money and have more glamorous dedicated tournaments to play for), but NOT allow professional boxers!  Or footballers.   You either do or you don't.

There was a time when they didn't allow any professionals, and the US for example sent college ball players.  I kinda felt that was more in the spirit of the Olympics.  I don't know

Professional footballers are allowed, just under a certain age (apart from the over-age players). That applies only to the men.

I know, but that is just another example of all these random rules.  Either do it or don't.  I think it should be all U21s in football, if not U18s

I'm happy that people want to express themselves through dance etc... but for me, it's not a sport unless you can measure it. Distance, time, weight or score.  Otherwise, it's artisic expression.

Ah.

I wonder how much the football thing is down to the Olympics, or FIFA, though. I'm sure FIFA is pretty happy with running the only big, unrestricted fully international tournament around.

What are your views on swimming?

Whenever I see swimming it seems easier to break world records than it does in track and field.

Not only that, if you are a good swimmer you can do the same distance in a different style and rack up the medals in one go.

For instance, if you are great at the 100m freestyle you can then do the 100m breastroke, the 100m butterfly, 100m backstroke, the medley etc and it's the same distance.

If you are a 100 metre track and field runner there is only one medal for the gold, you cannot run the 100m running slightly sideways, or 100 metres with your hands up in the air. You have to attempt massively different distances where it's a totally different ball game.

there is a certain degree of truth in that but it's not completely like that.  Swimmers need to specialise too.  Only the really good ones can do more than one style well.  Or those who can are good in the individual medley but not good enough to compete with the best in the specialised events.

In track and field it's even more difficult.  Didn't you ever wonder why no single person competed in both the long jump and the triple jump?  Surely it's the same discipline, but I guess it's a lot more compicated than that.

What Kelly Holmes did (gold in 400m and 800m I think) and especially what Usain Bolt did (gold and WR in 100m, 200m and relay) and Michael Phelps is just superhuman I think
