The BBC does tons upon tons of coverage if you have a digital TV with a "red button" and all the bells and whistles.  I imagine you can then pick and choose what you watch and you can watch events in their entirety.  If you're at the mercy of BBC1 & 2 it's like how you described, minus the delays, but with a lot of very annoying interviews with british athletes ... repeated ad nauseum eg  I cannot tell you how many times I had to watch Mark Cavendish talk about how disappointed he was he didn't win the bicycle road race and how amazing his team was and how they couldn't have done anything more

BBC 1 and 7 are wall to wall coverage all day from morning to late night for the next couple of weeks.

BBC made the wise move to get Ian Thorpe with them to comment on the swimming.  Great guy, great swimmer, knows his stuff, good commentator ... BUT my oh my is his dress sense atrocious!  It is shocking!  Shiny skin tight stretchy t-shirts showing his swimmer boobs undernieth gray/blue blazer jackets.  Foolz is this the latest in fashion in Australia?

He's not as large as I thought. I imagined he was like near 7 ft tall with gigantic hands.

Not sure, but Thorpe usually dresses rather high brow, so if it is a fashion, it's probably high fashion. LOL

EDIT: Coverage has improved. They're showing several hours of the cross country. Happy

Soon as I edited that they cut to another sport. LOL

10m synchronised diving was just awesome to watch.  Wow!  Just couldn't believe some of the stuff the crazy Mexican Diving Bombs pulled off.  No one else even dared attempt anything of a similar difficulty.  They should have got gold for the size of balls those guys showed, instead of the perfectly executed but oh so safe Chinese.  I bet those boys are Steel's nephews.  Proud sons of Mexico with balls of steel.

OMG Ian Thorpe tonight lol

His worst clothes yet.  Has to be seen to be believed.  He's wearing this chessboard sweater with a ridiculous open round neck over a white shirt and tie, and his trademark ridiculous blazer of sorts.

Tempted to take photo of TV

Dat sweater.

The Chinese were machines in the diving. Shame about the team mens gymnastics, the damned Japanese appealed and robbed us of the silver.

Olympic gymnast performs to Zelda theme

Ah, Mexico.

Olympic competitor likens his poor performance to Mario Kart

What do you do when you have a bad performance at the Olympics? Well, you know you'll have to do some Olympics. Why not come up with a colorful way to explain your poor finish? Here's what GB 49er sailor Stevie Morrison had to say about his lackluster sailing outings.

"It's like playing Super Mario Kart. Sometimes you get a banana skin, sometimes you get a mushroom. Today we got a lot more banana skins than mushrooms.

In fairness ... It was a very good call by the Japanese who were hard done by in the first place.  I have noticed a few occasions when the screaming public are influencing the judges in subjective events in favour of British athletes and it's not nice.  They did brilliantly to win the bronze, but they didn't deserve the silver.  The Japanese would have been robbed.

It was the same in the diving.  If the British pair hadn't made an obvious error in one of their dives, I think there would be a good chance they'd have got gold (even if they weren't as perfect as the Chinese) because sadly the screaming crowds influence judges' marks.

Was also very disappointed with the US swimming coach who made allegations about the Chinese 16 year old who trashed the world record the other day, being on banned substances.  Just because she swam faster than his swimmers, she has to be a cheat?  Not very nice.

I felt bad for the Ukraine gymnastic team to have thought they had won a medal then to have it taken away just like that.

True.  It was very cruel on them, and not their fault at all to have been played around with like that.  It wasn't the fault of the Japanese team either though.  They were clearly robbed and it was natural that they would contest the decision.  It was the fault of the judges who overzealously and unfairly penalised them in the first place (possibly to benefit Team GB?)

Daily Ian Thorpe fashion-crime report:

In fairness, I don't think he's too bad tonight.  He's wearing an ugly shiny fake-leather jacket and a t-shirt underneath.  He also seems to have had the sense to do his jacket zip up enough so his swimmer boobs don't show from under his t-shirt

That ending to the mens gymnastics was crazy. The silver would have been awesome for GB.

The team sports events should be worth more than one medal. I am going to talk basketball but this can apply to soccer as well. You bring together this super team of athelets, they have to play the entire two weeks in a mini season. They win the gold and its worth one measly medal. Meanwhile a swimmer can get 8 medals, there are a bunch of events. I know there isnt much you can do with those sports but its just disproportionate. Do a dunk contest, a 3 point contest, a skills contest, one on one play, get some more damn medals for basketball.

Though with many of the team sports the Olympics isn't really the biggest event so I suppose it doesn't matter much anyway. You could also do something like medals for two scorer and best player, but that doesn't seem to fit too well. I mean no one really cares about those at the proper events that the teams take part in.
