I bought it as part of the Nindie Humble Bundle this summer, and it's the only game from that bundle I haven't touched yet. Really need to get around to it.

You should play it.  I think you will really enjoy it.  Also apparently there is really awesome asymmetrical co-op play on the Wii U so you can get to play this with the boy and really make the most of it.  I haven't tried it myself because I'm a miserable git without friends or family but even playing solo was great fun.  

What other games were part of that bundle?  I have Lone Survivor and thinking about trying that.  Is it any good?

I now want to play Steamworld Dig.  I was a few hours into it but I think it may be best to just start again from scratch.  What do you think?

Also want to try Teslagrad and Shovel Knight at some stage.

Don't get Robio started on Lone Survivor again.  Nyaa  He loved it.

I don't think you should start over in Steamworld dig to get the most out of it, it's a simple enough concept and story to be able to just jump in again.  However, you should leave all that as it is and start Fast Racing Neo instead.  You know you want to.

You know...  I tried it.  I played the first track from the first GP.  It's really good.  It could use some more raver and ecstacy culture references to make it hip like Wipeout (I'm a child of the nineties you see) but it's still cool!  I will make a point of playing some more NEO today.

So Lone Survivor is that good eh?  Shouldn't have bought it, but I think it was about one quid fifty or something.

Bah, F-zero didn't need to be 'hip' to be awesome.  Youngsters these days...  Anyhow, I find NEO to be the perfect game to play after playing something more beefy like XCX.  I'll usually play a few hours of XCX in the evening, and then one or two attempts at a GP in NEO.

Lone Survivor is a great psychological horror game. Controls will take some getting used to, but aside from that I thought it was great.

SteamWorld Dig is also a top notch game. It's only around 6 hours to complete so even if you have to start over you won't be putting in tons of time. But like SupremeAC said, there's not a ton of story or anything going on in the game, so 10 minutes of experimentation to refamiliarize yourself with the controls is probably all you need.

Oh and fuck Teslagrad. It's a buggy piece of crap that's about as much fun as sitting on a tack.

1. Beat Ori and the Blind Forest - 8/10

I love me some Metroid (in case you didn't know), and where Axiom Verge lost me in 5 seconds, where Strider made me question why the fuck is it even Metroid, and where Guacamelee was just bad at that stuff, Ori is the shit. Ori gets the type of stuff I want other Metroid-like games to get, a lot of the upgrading and opening up a new area in the world, isn't go here, open this color coded door. It's a simple thing, but because the game is a platformer, it's more about you can reach higher elevation, or you have the bash technique, and it all helps to make the Blind Forest a legitimately Immersive 2d setting.

It doesn't feel nearly as artificial, nor tedious to go back and forth, it's mechanically sound in a way I want. It's a bit more on the slippery side, and I could deal with a better wall jump feel, but everything feels nice and tight. The combat isn't a liability, even if bosses are pushovers, but the platforming challenges are consistently enjoyable, sans the orb carrying segments. Those are lame as shit because they inherently mess with the thing that's cool about it: it's core mechanics, and dealing with a heavier more limited Ori is dull. The misty forest, interesting concept for a level in a Metroid-like game, but I can't say I enjoyed it as much as the rest of the sequences in the game. The Ginso Tree? God damn.

The story? The opening didn't do anything for me, ditto the ending. I guess they did a good job making me think the bird isn't butthole, but he was a butthole during the last part. I died a lot compared to my leaderboards, so I guess I suck at it, but fuck you I actually really like this game. It's the best one of those Metroid styled games since Shadow Complex, fuck I like it more than Shadow Complex, and I remember me liking Shadow Complex.



2. Beat Super Mario Bros. 9/10

It's original Mario Bros. it's a fucking classic, have they improved the platforming mechanics over the years? Yeah it's more slippery for OG Mario, but it plays divine to this day, any criticism of the game is null and void. Other than Mario Bros. 3 and Mario World are clearly superior.

Updated with The Swapper.  Wow, second puzzle game I beat just days after Stealth Inc. 2 and another one I thought would be too hard for me after reading reviews and what people had to say.  More gamer pride re-installed!!

I totally loved this game.  Built solely on the single premise of the machine you have in your posession which gives you the ability to create up to four clones of yourself and to swap into any one of them as long as you have direct line of sight.  In terms of gameplay philosophy the game I would most liken it to is Portal which is another puzzler built on a similarly singular premise.  While not as brilliant as Portal, The Swapper gets pretty close, especially considering it is the work of a small indie studio.

A lot of TLC went into the making of this, it is obvious to see.  The environments and character were all created using clay models and it makes the world sort of feel "alive".  The game is very atmospheric.  The visuals, together with the moody ambient music create a brooding atmosphere that is thick enough to cut with a knife.  It also makes the game rather unsettling as it gives out a very strong sense of isolation, similar perhaps to the first Dead Space (even though you never see what is out there trying to kill you.)

As in Dead Space (and also Metroid Prime and other games), the story of the game is told mostly indirectly, through a series of log pieces and other messages you find.  While not a science fiction masterpiece, the story is still better and more thought provoking than most games of this kind.  It also throws several philosophical questions and concepts around which I enjoyed messing about with.  I'd love to see more of this in games.

The puzzles themselves are very enjoyable and hugely varied, especially keeping in mind you never gain any new abilities and all of the puzzles are solved using your cloning-swapping ability.  They never feel repetitive and I didn't find any of them particularly frustrating.  And I solved all of them by trying to think about the solution as opposed to trying things at random.  So the puzzles felt very satisfying (a few of them particularly so).  If anything the game feels a little bit short and personally I met the ending rather abruptly.  I was expecting at least another half a dozen puzzle rooms or so.  But still, what is there is brilliant and it's better I think for a game to end before it gets repetitive rather than to outstay its welcome.

Brilliant game.  I know this was released in 2013 so most have probably played it.  But any of you haven't, you should definitely do so.

Updated with my first game of 2016.....Call of Duty Classic!

Its amazing how these games all follow the same basic formula going all the way back to the original here. Only the newer games obviously have more flair. Its also amazing how COD and Medal of Honor are so similar and yet EA completely dropped the ball on staying relevent.

I think I've stickied it.

For future reference on how to sticky threads: on the forum sub-directory there should be sticky and lock boxes which you can tick by clicking on. Then just save the changes (to the right of the boxes) and you're done. Un-tick and save to un-sticky. Just don't click delete by accident. Nyaa

The Swapper is actually fairly easy in terms of puzzles, but I think it's really good at making the "figure it out" part of a puzzle game feel inherently clever. It feels like you toy around with the puzzle a bit more, and are consistently shifting closer to the answer, and the answers while coming naturally do have moments where they feel unorthodox enough to make you feel all good about you in stuff.


In contrast more difficult puzzle games usually run into a scenario where the answer was a little too silly, and it just makes the player feel stupid because the puzzle itself wasn't all that well designed.

Updated with Shovel Knight.  Not much to say as I'm fairly LTTP as with most games.  It's a fun game, I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I don't get how it's supposed to be like a NES game.  With very few exceptions I couldn't stand to play NES games in this day and age.  (though perhaps I may need to rethink).  

But Shovel Knight is great.  The levels are enjoyable and offer a great variety of platforming challenges.  The checkpoints and unlimited lives make the game a lot less frustrating (not to mention possible to beat for a mere mortal like me) than most NES games.  The boss fights are great fun though perhaps a little bit on the easy side for a game of this time as I beat most of them first time of asking.  It has fun collectibles and things to upgrade etc.  The greatest thing about it is possibly the music.  I love these sounds and this type of chiptunes.  In fact I am tempted to download the soundtrack so I can listen to it on a proper system (I think I have a code to download it for free on bandcamp).  It's a great little game and I would love to see more of this sort of thing.

I am hoping Mighty Number 9 will be equally playable and enjoyable and will be more like this than the Mega Mans of our youth which are impossibly hard for me.
