I like the zapper, the 50something gal, or the straight splattershot or whatever. It's fun, moving around in the ink feels so cool and when you get a good run going and you jump from ink to ink it makes that bloop noise, so fucking good. I'm not a fan of the fucking perk nature in the game (fuck you modern mp shooters) and its annoying running into cats who have 3 perks while I got one perk stuff. Assholes. Otherwise fun game, Squid Jump isn't too bad either. I'm surprisingly digging it.
I'm only level 11 and I have a few 3 perk items.
Best thing to do is look at people in the plaza and press A to look for those with 3 perk items then just order them from the guy hidden in the alleyway.

The perks don't change things up all that much. First of all, the 'extra' perks aren't as powerfull as the main on on every piece of gear, and perks also don't stack evenly, there's a certain effect of diminnishing returns. Personally I found the unlocking of better weapons being tied to your level much more frustrating.
I also recall that splatfests will award you some kind of tokens that you can use to upgrade your gear, so you'll be able to just go all out with your fashion sense and not worry about perks after a while.
I am level 9 now. Sometimes I win matches, sometime I loose. Usually it depends what team you are in! But I find the levelling up to be too slow. It takes ages to get to level 10! I want to play ranked battles dammit!

How many hours roughly have you put into online matches so far would you say? I started to become sort of interested in this but it feels like the leveling up and how overpowered some players/guns already might be a big barrier of entry for new players. I.e. it may not be as friendly to casuals as, say Mario Kart 8 is!

I think I've put about 25 hours in, say 20 hours of online play and I'm at level 18. Your level basically dictates what guns you have access to, so higher levels might have an advantage on you. Still, I see plenty of people sticking with the first gun you get, and the teams get switched up after every match. I think as an online competetitive game, it's actually very casual-friendly. Save for a few guns, everything's pretty balanced. Some guns might be more powerfull, but they'll have a short range, requrie frequent ink reloading, or have inferior secondary and special weapons.
To keep things short: I have less of a problem with days where I seem to suck at Splatoon, than when I'm sucking at MK8

Definately. And to everyone, how do you use secondary weapons? I have completely forgotten. Level 9 now (I think).

Each match is only 3 minutes, I think I would have played about 30 matches? Maybe more, which is crazy because it feels like I've played it 15 hours.
I don;t feel overpowered yet, they have a balancing patch out, and I am assuming most level 20's prefer to play the ranked matches.

sub weapons require you to press R2 or whatever it's called. They use ink. Special weapons, you need to press the right thumbstick down, they have a gauge that charges up over time.

You mean the extra perks right, not the main perk. Those make a big difference IMO, stuff like the Ninja Squid and hidden squid jumps. I got a special piece of clothing from the splatfest.

I'm playing against people with double the level and experience and still doing decently. There are a few insane Japanese players though. And a few annoying weirdos at times. The good thing is that the stock weapon for newbies has a high fire rate for turf wars painting and a useful bubble shield to activate if someone gets too close.

Yes the top right shoulder button Aspro. Also people who get killed alot may want to get the ink saver perk that reduces the amount of your special bar lost when killed. My top tip would be to get the Ninja Squid and Ninja Jump perks. You can move and hide in ink completely invisibly and since your jumps aren't seen you don't get tagged instantly after you jump.

The problem isn't really that people with a higher level would be more skilled, but they have access to better weapons.
Also, Ninja squid is useless. You can go travel through ink completely invisible without it, you just need to go a bit slower. Ninja jump or whatever would be ok, but I don't use squid jump much, it's too slow in most levels.

Yes but the bubble shield nixes those better weapons as it's temporary invincibility for lower ranked players. Someone comes at you with the Krakken? Bubble shielf, bitch.
You cannot travel through ink cimpletely invisible without Ninja Squid, you are seen. Othwerwise why even create the perk in the first place.

I'm not dissing the splatter shot, just saying that some later weapons are better. Bubble shield can be extremely annoying. Still, what will you do if you haven't got your special fully charged, hmmm?

To keep things short and simple: you are wrong. You can travel through ink without being seen, but not when going full speed. So when in close combat and you need to bail out squidstyle, it's often better to do so slowly so you don't alert your opponent as to where you're hiding.

I love the word "shielf". If shielf were a word, what could it really mean?
Also, I walked into a shop selling games this morning as I had to go into town. They wanted 65 euros for this. Shitheads think that still nobody knows what the internet is to see that this is under 40 on amazon. Fuck helping the local economy, they won't get a cent from me.

A common mistyping of "shield".
Splatoon tower control is an orgy of fun
Sooooooo good.
Dang, must have played about 13 matches in a row. Won about 10 of them. This new mode is so fun!
There is this moving tower you have to jump on and ride out into the enemies territory. Only they attack you and seize control. So there is this great feeling of attack and counterattack, this ebb and flow.
In turf war you are mostly off doing your own thing, in splat zones you have to wait around once you've secured the area. In this mode, everyone is convening around this moving tower so the feeling of working together as a team is there and it is EPIC.
There's nothing like the feeling when you are the last man standing on the tower and there are a few metres left. You can see the enemy taking up vantage points to shoot you, you duck behind the tower post and pop out and shoot. Then win at the last second. SO MUCH FUN!
Or you duck behind enemy lines and flank them from behind as your team mates on the tower ride on home to success.
The existing arenas have been rejigged a little for this mode so you suddenly appreciate the verticality of the levels. The Kelp Domes grating surfaces you can shoot through suddenly become all important and when you are riding the tower you are fending people off from above, below and all around too.
Suddenly the weapon system shows it's genius. Sticky bomb guys are assholes, they just lob one onto the tower and you're screwed, so I jump off, shoot them from a distance then retake the tower. The strategy! Or I use my seeker bombs to draw a straight line ahead of me where the tower will move. Rollers are pretty useless now here too. Finally
I'm still grinning 20 minutes later after playing this mode, it feels like childhood Laser Tag x100. This game deserves to sell as much as Mario Kart. The multiplayer is supremely fun, I will bereft years from now when the servers are dead. Must have a sequel!

An alternative name for the cheesy substance that develops on ones penis, when not cleaned for a while.
Can someone lie to me tell me that the game is still chock full of bad players? The kind that just run into walls for 5 minutes at a time?
robio said:You know, by the time I get this game, I wonder if there will be a point to playing it. Between my natural inability to play shooters of any kind competitively, and everyone else's gradual improvement I have a feeling I'll be the weak link on any team that everyone groans about.

You can use the roller and just cruise about painting easily and lay the smack down with the Krakken. Or use the inkbrush to run around fast and use it like a melee weapon. Of course it has a single player mode too. Bad players? Not sure I've ever come across truly bad ones, douchy cheaters yes. Occasionally.

Don't fret about it. Teams get changed up between every match, so when we get stuck with you on our side, at least we can pull ourselves up knowing that you'll be on the other team next match!
Seriously though, I think the last 3rd party shooter I played was Metal Arms Glitch in the System on the GameCube. It's not really a shooter anyway, more like a competitive FLUDD based game.
Ideally you'll look for a quiet spot and plant it there. It's destroyable, so putting it in plain sight is not the best idea. They can be really pesky if overlooked, allowing the opposing team to spawn behind your own lines.
