The Republicans are far worse than any of the major Australian parties. One key reason why is that most Americans who don't vote dislike the party but since they don't show up to vote the party can ignore them.

This logic, according to some, actually resulted in Australia's George Bush being elected because he wasn't in a back-stabbing party of psychos...only for him to be stabbed in the back some months later lol. Some years earlier, we also had the same prime minister for many, many years whom the majority of people were against according to repeated poling, but kept voting in again and again.

Still beter than the Republicans and the current state of American politics.

Also polling and how much people would prefer one person to be president are two different things. Barrack Obama practically never had a 50%+ approval rating, yet if he ran for a third term everyone would vote for him.

I wouldn't know, having never lived in America; but the point is that it doesn't support your suggestion that it's better because of compulsory voting.

There is no president in Australia, but I agree about poling.Nyaa

We'll agree to disagree. It isn't an all sovling solution, but it is a good thing to have IMO.

Mandatory voting is just a bad idea all around. If you want to increase voters participation, do stuff that actually makes people want to vote. Forcing people to vote is just fighting the symptoms instead of the underlying cause.

I disagree that mandatory voting is a bad thing.  At least then not only those with avid beliefs will decide what direction to take the country in.  You'll also see the silent masses' more moderate views reflected in the voting, leading to less extreme results.

What I don't understand is how you can have a country where there are only 2 political parties of any semblance.  Over here there are at least 4 parties with enough weight behind them that voting for them is a sane thing to do, and then another 4 or so smaller parties with more extreme views of where society should be headed..

The two party system is horrendous. Technically the country is really four parties. The far right (Trump/Tea Party), the right (Republicans), the centrists (Democrats), and the left (Sanders). Not sure if mandatory voting leads to more moderate results though. Ecuador and Bolivia for example are the furtherst left wing countries in the hemisphere outside of Venezuela and Cuba for example.

I'm just saying that you are either stuck with a republican or a democrat, and neither of them wants to give the other the satisfaction of actually achieving something. If there would be more parties, there'd be more openings to achieve a consensus. Also, I started from the assumption that the silent masses are more moderate in their views, as is the case over here. If a whole nation is left wing the government should reflect that.  I guess I was just pointing out that with mandatory voting at least the gorvernment will reflect the views of the whole nation, instead of only those who care enough to go vote even if they don't have to.

Regardless, I actually don't dabble in politics too much, just giving my 2 cents.
