Actually, I think I do have some words to add.  There are a lot of faces that I've seen a lot of in TV and movies and sports and entertainment who provided a lot of direct enjoyment, and seen some of those pass on and it's sad when they do.  Iwata wasn't a direct performer.  He wasn't seen that often.  But when it did, it was an event, and not just one where it's like a movie release.  It was something I shared with everyone here.  Memorable moments that brought us to posting as him here and talking about how it's impossible not to be happy hearing his voice.  To me, Iwata is inexorably linked to the history of this place and helped be part of what brought us all together in the first place.  Insofar as that, we've lost a little piece of us here as well.

I knew he'd been sick quite for some time now, but this still comes as shock. 55 is way too young. Rest in peace, Mr. Iwata.

Holy shit....I just logged on here & saw the news and it was literally one of those "this can't be real" moments.

Very sad news. No matter what anyone thought of the man as a leader, he seemed like a genuine good guy & 55 is way too young these days to go.

I'm shocked because he seemed like a fairly healthy guy for his age. Man....

Bad news, I have developed a lump on the side of my abdomen that is discoloured on the surface. It's tender to the touch about 2 inches long and everyday gets more tender. Also crapped a little blood 3 times in the past 6 months. Hospital specialist dept says that they discharged me back to my GP a year and a half ago....but they forgot to tell me, so I can't see them anymore. And it's near impossible to get an appointment with my local doctor in advance. I'm without a car thanks to that Romanian titbag so I can't pick up an emergency appointment either.

Sad

Iwata died.

Sucks that a person with such a positive public-facing appearance is taken from us.

In one interview posted to “Iwata Asks,” Mr. Iwata explained that his drive to expand Nintendo’s game offerings and user base was motivated by more than the lure of making money or beating competitors. While those things mattered, he said, he was also driven in part by a desire to improve “the position of video games in society.”

“I believe that if we don’t make moves to get people who don’t play games to understand them, then the position of video games in society will never improve,” Mr. Iwata said. “Society’s image of games will remain largely negative, including that stuff about playing games all the time badly damaging you or rotting your brain or whatever. If that happens, then even people who enjoy games will start to feel a strange guilt when they play them.”

When I checked my phone this morning I thought the story update was a joke.

I'm at a loss for words. I feel like there is a pit in my stomach right now. Because of the way they interact with their fans, losing such a public figure who has been in mulptiple N.Directs feels more personal than it would be with other executives. It's just so sudden too. Horrible news.

Its really unbelievable. Anytime someone dies that has directly affected my life in some way, I just start thinking of all the other people who have been lost as well and it becomes a very sad time for me. This must be the most somber day within Nintendo that they've ever had.

As far as his successor goes, I really hope its not Miyamoto. The man is a genius, but as far as leading an entire company I just don't think he's a good fit because he's too set on what he wants alone, especially in terms of hardware. Remember this was a problem even back in the Gamecube days that was talked about....Miyamoto having too much control over not just Nintendo's games, but even the choices they were making with hardware.

I don't think Miyamoto really understands what people want out of machines anymore. Or if he does, he just doesn't care. Shiggy should keep developing games, or helping out.

I personally think they need a younger guy who's more up to speed on modern gaming trends.

They must feel like a ship without a captain.

Takeda and Miyamoto are acting directors I hear. Miyamoto and Shibata have said that they will continue with Iwatas gaming ethos. And it sounds like whatever Iwata was planning with NX and whatever else there is, will be executed faithfully.
