I cannot stress this enough: If you have the means to play Bastion, DO SO!

It could very well end up being my GOTY this year!

The incredible narration. The gameplay engine that gives you so many ways to fight, so fighting is always fun, unique and different. The fact that you can adjust the difficulty to your liking by invoking the gods (reminds me of TWEWY). The music. The story. EVERYTHING about it is heads and shoulders above practically everything else (especially retail releases), that --THIS-- game, more than any other downloadable before it, DEMANDS ATTENTION!

I've heard nothing bad about this game at all, it seems like they've hit it out of the park on their first try.  I do wonder how much of the praise comes from aspirational game reviewers though (as in, "see, Greg made it, I could do that, I could totally do that").

The other thing I find amazing is that in every instance they call the narration "innovative".  Clearly none of these people have played a sports game in the last 4 years.  The "narration" in MLB The Show, for example is absolutely incredible in terms of the quickness in which a relevant comment is pulled and played (and the depth of comments so you don;t get hardly any repetition).

Do I have to school you guys about the correct use of  'average'  again? The word you looking for is mediocre

I don't think aspirations have anything to do with it. If that were the case, I think we would see the other side of the coin and see "jealousy" reviews too. Greg K's been out of the reviewer's chair for so long now, I don't think that was even taken into account. This is just a damn solid, great game! It's very unique but also very personal in the way that you play it. The options you are given weapon-wise, the adjustability of the difficulty, the new game + when you are done, the customizable weapons...

You take the game and make it your own... and that's the secret to the narration too:  It feels personal, like you are part of a living story. The quality of the voice-work, the words that are chosen and how they are said... IT'S all that and more! Sports have a language all their own and situations that tend to repeat themselves due to the nature of the sport itself. A game in which a narrator is describing what an individual is doing combined with the natural, flowing quality... it's like nothing else before it!

I hate to use the cliche, but you won't understand until you've played it yourself.

I am talking about the mathematical and statistical meaning of average. Unless you meant that if you take the summation of all first person shooters and divide them by the total number of first person shooters you end up with Resistance. Seeing as all the fps look alike lately, this might not be far from the truth.

Yeah I would imagine that they are naming it Mario Kart 7 to distinguish it as a new game. Personally it doesn't matter to me really what they call it but I guess some may have confused it. I can't believe Mario Kart DS is STILL selling at it's original launch price here of $45.

I hate to use the cliche, but you won't understand until you've played it yourself.

I can absolutely garantee there is more lines of dialog recorded for MLB The Show than in Bastion.  And also that the situations in Bastion are far more predictable than those found in a typical baseball game (since in a baseball game there is an endless number of variables which are discussed -- including pitch history, weather, pitch location, batter tendencies to name just a few).

Again, I've heard nothing bad about the game at all, all I am saying is that the use of dynamic commentary is not innovative.

The reviews that I've read don't talk ONLY about dynamic narration. They talk about the quality of the voice acting, the words that are chosen, how they are spoken and the way in which the game describes what you are doing, drops subtle hints, makes sarcastic remarks... It's innovative in the way it's not just describing, it's innovative in the way it's natural and emotive. It's not that dynamic narration hasn't been done before; it's that it hasn't been done in THIS way before.

This editorial on Bastion I posted earlier today describes it better than I can:

_____________

How you talk to me matters

I hate that so many videogames have subtitles turned on by default. My brain reads subtitles in a very different way than it listens to voices. Ideally, you should have a compelling enough voice that I want to hear it instead of just quickly read it. For instance, the narration in Bastion.

Bastion’s narrator will comment on what you’re doing as you’re doing it. When this happens, and when it seems like it came from a choice I made, I feel like the narrator is paying attention to me. He’s not a canned voice playing out a script, like Cave Johnson in Portal 2. Instead, he’s talking directly to me, and we have a relationship, like GlaDOS. But unlike the carefully scripted Portal games, where GlaDOS speaks right on cue and the same way every time, Bastion’s narrator notices things that won’t necessarily happen all the time. He says something about the specific pair of weapons I chose at the armory, or about how I’m out of health potions and vulnerable to a specific monster, or how I’m taking so much time clearing out stabweed. The narrator is not just a recorded voice. He’s here, with me, watching me, commenting on what I’m doing, talking to me in a way that reaches beyond some guy in a sound booth reading lines. It’s one of the most startlingly human innovations since LA Noire’s facial expressions.

^And don't forget that in 2007 Mario Galaxy came out and pimped slapped all other platformers like Yamauchi pimped slapped Iwata after losing his $500,000,000 in a single day and then cutting has salary in half. No one messes with Yamauchi.

Who cut who in half?
