That's unfortunate about the layoffs at Raven. I really enjoyed Wolverine and I'm still planning on picking up Wolfenstein soon.

Yeah, it is bummer news.

It's getting harder for these developers because of the crazy amount of funding that goes into one of these current-gen games. In the past, a studio can still stay afloat after a flop, but not anymore.

I hate to say this but I think the best way to play it safe is to make a bunch of DS or downloadable arcade games for XBL Arcade or PSN just so they can fund themselves from the profits. These can be casual or something simpler and sensible like Castle Crashers or Henry Hatsworth. Their lower-budgeted and can turn a quick profit.

I think developers should stop trying to do much and lessen the load. Raven Software was making three current-gen games while working on Wolfenstein. That's a huge risk, even if it was divided among three different studious. It's the same thing that happened with Grin.

I think developers should make one downloadable game, a core DS game, a casual DS/Wii game, and then use those to keep the studio alive while working on a major project for current-gen consoles. I'd do that if I was the head of a game development studio. It makes sense to me instead of working on three major projects at once.

I haven't touched LKS yet, but Metroid Prime controls like a dream.   My favorite game of last gen., possibly ever has gotten better.

I'm waiting to play LKS after I finish Batman.

Do the controls make it easier? They haven't shoved in more enemies to compensate, right?

Amazing artwork!

He's an amazing artist.

i was reading an article on whether people should boycott shadow complex in light of orson scott card's backwards opinions on gay rights and i read that the guy who composed the music for the entire dragon quest series (all 9 games) is an extreme right winger who denies the rape of Nanking (to me this is as bad as a holocaust denier).  i have to say this upset me somewhat.  i understand that people are entitled to "a job" regardless of their opinions and that one should be able to differentiate between the two but some opinions are just unacceptable (i would go as far as to say should be criminal)

Doesn't it depend whether the unacceptable opinions are incorporated into the work? If Shadow Complex was a game about denying gay rights I can see the problem.

It's an iffy subject because its something we enjoy so we overlook these kinds of things. Like Michael Jacksons music, enjoyed for a couple of decades before paedo allegations. Do we still like his music?

Thanks for the Thursday morning updates guys.

Wow:

Level-5 invites players into a 'Fantasy Life' ... in a doomed town
In addition to the London Life RPG inside Professor Layton and the Devil's Flute, Level-5 announced another collaboration with Brownie Brown, the Sword of Mana developer and Mother 3 co-creator: Fantasy Life, a town simulation in the vein of Animal Crossing.

Fantasy Life occurs in the world of Fantazeal, which shows prophesied signs of impending destruction after a shadow passes over the moon. If this were a normal RPG, you'd portray some kind of teenaged hero fighting to save the world from this catastrophe, but in this game, it basically doesn't seem to matter: you choose a job and undertake daily "Life Quests" related to that job, to improve your wealth and happiness levels. The game includes local and online wireless functionality, allowing others to visit your town.

Aside from Level-5 and Brownie Brown, Fantasy Life features more big names. Nobuo Uematsu is composing an opening theme, as well as ending themes for the ending of each job's "life," and character design is being done by Hideo Minaba, a Final Fantasy series alum who most recently designed the characters in
Little King's Story.

I'm trying to get sold on this game, but so far it's not happening.  The reviews aren't quite convincing me yet.  They're not bad, but they're not really selling me yet you know?  I don't know, I'm still sort of in videogame burn out mode.  I'm enjoying Professor Layton and Devil Survivor, but nothing else out there is even interesting me.

As unpopular as it sounds, I'm not even interested in Muramasa anymore.  I think it's beautiful and one of the best looking games around, and would be fun to watch. . . but that's all.  I don't think the game looks like much fun to play.  The more videos I watch, the more I go. . . hmmmmm that doesn't look fun at all, this is just a pretty button masher.

Guys check out the Cursed-Mountain launch trailer. I'm getting big Eternal Darkness vibes of this one.

I feel the same way on both games. But with Muramasa its mostly due to the game not being out till Spring 09 in Europe.

The saving grace from CMoutain reviews is that the bad ones all sound like people who are really impatient and want a wham bam thank you maam horror shooter. Most of them even say that. One reviewer who doesn't like it says that its like the original Resident Evil pacing, more of an adventure game pacing. I know some people who actually want that kind of game.

EDIT: Just read NOM mag gave it 82%

The good reviews say that if you want a slow paced, atmospheric game where you soak it in and become the character, and dont yearn for action then you might enjoy it.

Some Beyond Good and Evil 2 news. I've had to translate this from French.

I'll try and clear it up:

Our fellow-members of Gamekult contacted Ubisoft after the remarks of Laurent Detoc confirming the sequel has yet to get the go ahead. Our editor confirmed today that the development “follows its course” and that there has been “no interruption”. If that is official, the game remains on standby all the same.

Original:

Our fellow-members of Gamekult quite simply contacted Ubisoft more after the remarks of Laurent Detoc affirming qu' a continuation n' was not yet sour to be born. L' French editor affirms aujourd' today that the development “follows its course” and qu' it n' there have “no interruption”. If all that has the merit d' to be official, one remains on standby d' all the same; a confirmation in images…

Agreed Muramasa looks nice, but I am not sold on the gameplay yet.
