But if Nintendo Europe can do it........ surely its budget isn't that big compared to NOA? So why can NOE do it and NOA not? As you said they have to do multiple languages too. Perhaps NOA just isn't as well run as NOE if they don't have the bandwidth to deal with all these titles.

I can't imagine Xenoblade never being released in the west, it's one of my favourite Wii games. I hope Disaster is released on the eshop in America.

I feel the same about Pandora's Tower.  In fact it should be one of your next games.  Even if you don't want to look for a boxed version, it's available on the e-shop (though I would check amazon first).

Want to try to play Xenoblade but the length of it stresses me out.  It also seems like one of those ultra complicated RPGs where you need to learn their systems in great depth or you will get stuck.

So this sucks:

So if NOE didn't pay for Xenoblade localsation it never would have been released in the States. Why can NOE localise these games and NOA can't? Disaster Day of Crisis didn't have tons of dialogue to translate and NOE did that too so NOA could have brought it over. NOE also did Fatal Frame while NOA ignored it.

Nintendo of Europe localised not just Xenoblade Chronicles, but also The Last Story and Pandora's Tower.  All three were huge projects and I'm sure they cost them piles of money which is unlikely that they ever made.  So all three games had the voice work done in English already and the subtitles translated to five different languages.  All the work was done.  Then NoA said we're not bringing those three games to the US, and that's what gave rise to what became known as Operation Rainfall.  The campaign by a vocal group of fans to get those games published in the US.  Nintendo of America caved in a little and said, fine we'll bring you Xenoblade Chronicles but we're not touching the other two.  After some time Xseed stepped in to publish The Last Story and eventually Pandora's Tower to the US.  So gamers got what they wanted (on that occasion) but what numbers did those games make?  Miniscule.  Small but vocal minorities on the Internet often "sound" like big angry mobs when sadly there's not a big enough number of them to make localising most of these games profitable.

I still like to think it's possible with most titles.  Personally I couldn't care less if they didn't have dubbed voicework.  In fact I would so much rather listen to the Japanese voice-track and read subtitles (even if the dubs have improved massively in recent years).  Surely that would save a lot of work and money right?

It will suck for me personally if there comes a time when the only Japanese games we get to play are the major blockbusters.  I got into gaming at an era when all the games I loved were Japanese and that has stayed true to a very large part to this day.  Don't want to think about not getting to play all these great games but it is already happening.  I'm thankful for the few brave companies who are still willing to take a chance on publishing these games to the west.

A few thoughts:

  • Yes obviously certain games are a bigger investment...but does that mean these games should just not be produced anymore? If you do that, then you're limiting the audience and the type of person who will be interesting in gaming moving forward. Then you're left with only a certain group who will get sick of the same old thing eventually...then you have nobody.
  • Nintendo over the past 10 years have gotten really cheap in this regard....not bringing all games to all regions. Especially NOA.....sorry you guys are cheap bastards. Its costs money to make money. Isn't it worth taking a hit on costs to slowly expand your userbase? Or are the 10 million Wii U's you guys have sold to a certain crowd good enough? If you don't take chances on software, you will NEVER expand the audience to what it used to be back in the N64 or even Gamecube days. The Wii was different....you struck gold on a very fly by night crowd who have since left you for dead. Good luck trying to get that back.
  • Sometimes I wish Nintendo didn't buy Monolith...if Sony did, all their games would be worldwide releases no questions asked. Same with Fatal Frame...why hold that Wii game back from a USA release? It was a worldwide franchise before you guys bought it. Would Rare's games be denied a USA release if Nintendo still owned them too? Maybe that's why Rare had to publish most of their later N64 titles themselves....

Maybe this "going digital" release they are trying with Project Zero 5 will become a thing now and they'll start bringing more games to the west as downloads if it minimises cost and risk.  It's what Sega is doing with Yakuza 5.

Digital release is better than no release but I like full console games to come in a box.  Especially with Nintendo since what you buy is only tied to your console and not to an account.  That's what keeps me from buying more things from the e-shop.

Back compat could really make me consider an Xbone.  I didn't own an X360 or PS3, so if they can get a large library available I could play a lot of games for the first time from the comfort of my couch.

Oh, who am I kidding, I have a big enough backlog already, and I only own a WiiU.  Sad

That blows my mind that you never had a 360 or a ps3.

If I may be so bold as to apply some cultural stereotyping (as the marketing department probably will be), NoE might have higher expectations for the sales of foreign content than Nintendo o' 'Murica!!! Other than that they're not necessarily going to have the same policies, even if they have similar budgets.

Got the new TV set up today, like fully setup with all the consoles. Pretty nice, better picture and audio.

Then in a relentless pursuit of satifying my curiosity I took apart the dead plasma TV.  Kept all the useful screws, used the glass as a table top for my desk.  It was an elegant construction, very intelligent. About 6 boards inside that looked really expensive (and primitive at this point, even though it was only 5 years old).  LOTS of heat sinks. Shame I could not salvage much more than the glass and screws.

You really got me with the splash wall, you're actually the only person who's ever used it against me. The sound effect though when you shoot it, is the same as when you're hitting someone, so it tricks my brain into keeping shooting it. Then I get splatted.

But the games will only be free if you own physical copies and if the publishers agree to it. Otherwise you may have to buy them? And even with a 500gb drive it will eat up your HDD.
