Dat cloud

Crackdown 3 effectively turns your Xbox One into the most powerful console ever made.

New article on GamesRadar. They have a full preview up later today.

http://www.gamesradar.com/crackdown-...ole-ever-made/

So, Crackdown 3 might be the most impressive demo I've ever seen. We'll have a full preview up later today, but suffice it to say that all that bluster about "leveraging the Cloud" to bring hitherto unseen levels of physics-based destruction is totally accurate. That moment in the CG teaser trailer where an Agent collapses a building into another building to kill the naughty crime boss inside? You can do that. Easily. I've seen it happen. I have seen such things.

You'd think this would require an immense internet connection to keep it rolling, not least when four players (this is the current maximum size for a multiplayer party, although it could increase) are doing the same thing in four separate corners of the city, but the relative ease of swapping information between Xbox and server means the strain is fairly small. Jones says that his team are optimising the game for a 2-4mbps connection.

So, I ask the question - does this technology make the Xbox One more powerful? Jones nods. Does it, effectively, make it the most powerful console ever made while those servers are running? Jones nods. While Crackdown utilises it purely for physics, the opportunity here is clear. Who knows what another company could make with this, given the time? For the moment, though, I'm not entirely bothered - I just knocked a penthouse balcony off its moorings and watched it take 20 others out on its way to the ground. I'm still smiling.

http://metro.co.uk/2015/08/05/crackd...#ixzz3i31sTbtw

It was only the first proper day of Gamescom today, but Crackdown 3 was easily the most impressive thing we saw – and that included a hands-off demo of Fallout 4 and the destruction-filled Just Cause 3 (we’ll write those previews up later). In fact amongst our excited demands for the final game we insisted that Jones and his team licence the tech out so we can finally get a decent Superman and Godzilla game.

But what really has us so excited is that this is not technology for technology’s sake. Developer Reagent Games haven’t spent years inventing ways to make slightly more realistic looking moustaches (yes, that was a dig at The Order: 1886), they’ve used it to create something that would’ve been completely impossible in the previous generation. That’s what we’ve been waiting for, and we couldn’t be more excited to see Crackdown 3 finally destroy any lingering disappointment with the current generation.

Goddamn....JET Force Gemini looks awesome on the Xbone. They didn't revamp the graphics like the HD versions of Banjo and Perfect Dark as far as I know, but the game is in full widescreen with super crisp visuals and much better controls. I mean most Wii titles aren't even in true widescreen so this blows my mind.

I really need to get heavily into this game soon. One of my all time favorite N64 games. This just reminded me why it blew me away so hard in 1999. It was one of those games that pushed the system so hard it looks like a fucking Dreamcast title. I hope there's a lot of people playing this for the first time.

Oh, I also fucked with Perfect Dark Zero a bit.....I still think this game, while obviously not as awesome as the original, is better than people give it credit for. The controls are a bit wonky but the levels and weapons and general vibe is great. Still actually looks pretty nice too, 10 years later. Fuck....10 years since the 360 launched. That is insanity right there. I even managed to get into an online match for the first time in about 8 years. lol

Found this of someone playing it in widescreen mode. You can play it in border mode too like all the older games, with a 4:3 image and art on the sides but why in the hell would you do that when you don't have to?

Haven't played this one in yonks, was great at the time. I miss my N64 games, I thought my machine broke so I bought another and it didn't work either. I think it's the adapter.

So this sucks:

Chris Pranger From Nintendo Treehouse Discusses Harsh Realities Of Localisation:

The hardest thing for everyone to understand and to accept — and I’ve seen this first hand in the company, that this is typified — people think that obviously they’re right, and what they like or dislike has to be the norm. Why would it be otherwise? And they just say the classic “Why do you hate money? Why do you hate money, Nintendo?”

And it’s like “What are you talking about? We’re trying to make…obviously it has to make calculated risks, but at the same time, one of those risks…and I mean they’ll bring up games that are very Japanese games, like Captain Rainbow for instance. They’ll bring that up like “Look how many people want this. Don’t you want money?” And we’ll be like “Yeah, we do want money, which is why we know it’s a colossal waste if we ever try to localize that in this current market, because look at you people. You don’t make up a big enough group.

The hardest part for people to realize is how much money it takes sometimes to make a game like…if it’s a Japense game, to bring it over the States. Not just translating and then localizing and marketing, but if it’s a game that has substantial voice text, oh my goodness! That is a collosal cost to bring that over. And some games you look at and you’re like “Well how are they going to bring that over?” and it’s like “Well, they can’t.”

You look at something like even Xenoblade Chronicles. People love that game, you know, within a certain group. That game is not the type of game that just pulls in enough to justify the costs on that. So that’s like, we got it in the States by luck, that NoE decided “Oh, we’ll take the fall. We’ll localize that.” Okay, cause someone is going to have to eat the costs somewhere, because that game is guaranteed to not sell enough to justify how big that game is. You know, hundreds of hours, all voiced. That’s a lot of money that goes into that.

And people are like “Why do you guys hate money?” We don’t. That’s why you literally can’t make everything. And people don’t like finding out that their fanbase is actually too small to justify the costs of the thing they want.

So if NOE didn't pay for Xenoblade localsation it never would have been released in the States. Why can NOE localise these games and NOA can't? Disaster Day of Crisis didn't have tons of dialogue to translate and NOE did that too so NOA could have brought it over. NOE also did Fatal Frame while NOA ignored it.

I need to know who is down for the Splathour tommorrow, let me know.

If there are too few I will leave it unprotected and some of my Wii U Miiverse buds might join. If we have somewhere near 6-8 confirmed I will password protect it, so no one is left out.

Nintendo of Europe localised not just Xenoblade Chronicles, but also The Last Story and Pandora's Tower.  All three were huge projects and I'm sure they cost them piles of money which is unlikely that they ever made.  So all three games had the voice work done in English already and the subtitles translated to five different languages.  All the work was done.  Then NoA said we're not bringing those three games to the US, and that's what gave rise to what became known as Operation Rainfall.  The campaign by a vocal group of fans to get those games published in the US.  Nintendo of America caved in a little and said, fine we'll bring you Xenoblade Chronicles but we're not touching the other two.  After some time Xseed stepped in to publish The Last Story and eventually Pandora's Tower to the US.  So gamers got what they wanted (on that occasion) but what numbers did those games make?  Miniscule.  Small but vocal minorities on the Internet often "sound" like big angry mobs when sadly there's not a big enough number of them to make localising most of these games profitable.

I still like to think it's possible with most titles.  Personally I couldn't care less if they didn't have dubbed voicework.  In fact I would so much rather listen to the Japanese voice-track and read subtitles (even if the dubs have improved massively in recent years).  Surely that would save a lot of work and money right?

It will suck for me personally if there comes a time when the only Japanese games we get to play are the major blockbusters.  I got into gaming at an era when all the games I loved were Japanese and that has stayed true to a very large part to this day.  Don't want to think about not getting to play all these great games but it is already happening.  I'm thankful for the few brave companies who are still willing to take a chance on publishing these games to the west.

But if Nintendo Europe can do it........ surely its budget isn't that big compared to NOA? So why can NOE do it and NOA not? As you said they have to do multiple languages too. Perhaps NOA just isn't as well run as NOE if they don't have the bandwidth to deal with all these titles.

I can't imagine Xenoblade never being released in the west, it's one of my favourite Wii games. I hope Disaster is released on the eshop in America.
