My SSD drive has built in encryption. Bitlocker is likely your best option, but it only comes bundled with the more expensive versions of Windows 7 and 8. I used Truecrypt for years, which was a free encryption software. Sadly, development on it has stopped earlier this year, and isn't considered to be safe anymore.

Yoda probably knows of better solutions.

I found a decent free one a while back but it didn't lock external drives/media so it was useless.

Still suffering from the airplane cough here, almost a month after it started when they gave us a written warning about Middle East Respiratory Syndrome. Just read this on the CDC website:

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS)

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) is viral respiratory illness first reported in Saudi Arabia in 2012. It is caused by a coronavirus called MERS-CoV. Most people who have been confirmed to have MERS-CoV infection developed severe acute respiratory illness. They had fever, cough, and shortness of breath. About 30% of people confirmed to have MERS-CoV infection have died.

So, awesome.
