19 hours into Pikmin 3 story mode here, going for 100% fruit collection.
You want to really know what will happen? Convergence. When its time for Nintendo to announce the 3DS successor, they're going to announce an all-in-one system that works as a home console and portable console. They're already flirting with that to some extent with off-screen play with the Wii U. So next they'll come up with some kind of docking station where you can either play your games on the system itself or onto the TV with a separate controller. The big win for Nintendo with this model is that they no longer have to split their development resources between two systems. It'll all be focused on one system.
Quote me now, because 3 years from now that's whats going to happen.
I've thought about this myself, but one thing prevents me from being sure it will happen. And that is the fact that, if this system bombed, they would have nothing to fall back on the way they did with the GB Advance to the Gamecube, or the 3DS to the Wii U. If their one and only piece of hardware bombs, that's it.
Completed Pikmin 3 in 20 hours with all fruit. Tried mission mode, really fun.
I've thought about that, but I stand by it. Nintendo''s greatest weakness during the first year of the Wii U and 3DS alike is that they didn't have enough games or at least quality games. That's also kind of what happened with the Wii in it's finaly 18 months. Given how development isn't getting any cheaper I see them as having two choices. Either develop for one system or start buying up more developers. If they end up buying Atlus, then I'll retract this, but I have a feeling that's unlikely. 1 system (with a handheld angle) that they can devote their full resources too seems less risky than having a fallback handheld to make up for a console's shortfallings.
Mission mode is great. The treasure collecting missions have become my crack over the past day. I start that up and then go.... "I've been playing for an hour???" Just wish you could actually post a score though. Nintendo is really overdue for a proper scoreboard.
It would be stupid to can the Wii U, all that does is undermine consumer confidence for the future consoles. They need to just satiate existing users and entice new ones long term. If they did can Wii U what would the new console be? Just a powerful console with a normal controller? Wii U already has a normal controller and can produce beautiful games. How would this kick start sales exactly? You think 3rd parties will auto jump onto it just like that? They would have been better off releasing Wii U this Christmas on a more even keel with a bit later tech and better launch games. Imagine them launching with Pikmin 3, W101, Lego City, Mario 3dworld, WWaker, DKC, NSMB, Zombi U, Rayman Legends.

If I can ever get a respectable score I will. I've been struggling just to get the bronze medal on most levels.
