I'm on baby watch right now, guys.  The baby isn't due till the fifth, but the wife is having contractions now. It's probably Braxton-Hicks, fake contractions. (I'm secretly hoping I at least have time to pick up Luigi's Mansion tomorrow Nyaa)

It's a sign we're getting old my friend. In the meantime tell the baby to wait, and there's a game to be played. God knows gaming isn't as fun when you're sleep deprived.

At least that makes for a cheaper night.

This week I've been playing (since I won't have time to tell you tomorrow)

I gotta say, this game is worth every penny (oh wait a minute I got it for free from Foolz).  It's most likely a game I never would have paid for given my horrible experiences with Serious Sam 2 on the XB.  Back then it was a poor man's Doom.  These days, being a poor man's Doom is actually a good thing, as given what id did with Doom 3 they would have been better taking the low brow approach.

This is essentially Doom 2 in HD. It's brilliant.  It has all the run and gun, the resource management, the slow weapon reveals, the goofy monsters.  It's great.  I wish more companies would rip off the classics, as the classics were originally intended.  I guess like how Cities XL is better at doing SimCity than Maxis is these days.

Also been playing magic the gathering on Steam:

It's just like the table top card game, so I am addicted.  Really loving it.

I did not continue playing Retro City Rampage, where I am stuck on a platforming level, nor did I fire up my PS3 to play Sleeping Dogs.  I was really impressed by it, but just didn't want to go through the effort of turning on the PS3 etc... Nor did I play FF8 on Vita.  Just too tired, sleeping about 4-5 hours a day doesn;t make for much in-bed pre-sleep gaming.

My goals for the week are to finish Serious Sam 3 and restart The Walking Dead, and hopefully finish it by next Saturday.

IGN early review thing. Holy shit I don't think I've cared less about anything more in gaming ever.  Remember in the old days when EGM would come out with a review and it would say on the cover, "World First Review"?  BFD. IGN got an exclusive, kudos to them.

The outlets that are honoring the embargo are being precisely as collusionary as IGN.  If you want to be pure, blow the fucking embargo and print your review.

The pious bullshit in gaming editorial these days is getting out of hand.

I am about 5 hours in playing GoW on hard and this game is kicking my ass. Hard is actually hard, wow. Anyway it makes it more intense for me so I like it. The game is still GoW so I still enjoy it a lot, this is a great game.

That said some of the choices they made with the combat are baffling. What is up with parry? Now when you parry if you miss you are completely vulnerable, it makes parry more risk than it is worth and now you cant deflect projectiles back. Losing your normal power combos and tying that to the rage meter, are you kidding me, reducing your move list is a great idea... Speaking of the rage meter that has the be the worst combat mechanic in any action game. The meter takes forever to go up and you cant get touched, you cant stop attacking, and once you get it maxed finally you can use some power moves but if you use the super you lose the whole bar. It makes doing the super a waste. Trying to get the bar up is nearly impossible, you have to play super careful which means you attack very slow which means the bar is always dropping. To have almost all your moves tied to that is idiotic.

The elemental attacks add almost nothing which is a far cry from the weapon variety of GoW3. I cant even tell if the elemental attacks do anything different? Are some enemies weaker to some attacks, I dont know? What is the point of using them, I dont know? Their orb bonuses almost never show up. Trying to reach their magic will take the entire game so whats the point of magic.

The combat is a huge step back, it feels like a slightly better GoW1. At least the difficulty is making me play very careful so blocks and evades are important and I cant button mash, though I am beginning to think the button mashing was more fun.

Oh and what is up with the sound? This has some of the worst sound mixing I have ever heard. The music is too loud in parts with the sound effects sounding muffled. Effects are not synced with the action. Sound drops happen often. What a mess.

It is still GoW so I love the world I am exploring and the working in of some cool puzzles. The action can still be fun and thrilling despite the issues. This formula is very fun but this is not at the level of the other console GoW games.

I read the entire thing twice and I'm not entriely sure if you're talking about the new God of War or the new Gears of War.  I'm inclined to think God of War because you speak of orbs etc but still not entirely sure.  Games have become so uniform these days.

I'm on baby watch right now, guys.  The baby isn't due till the fifth, but the wife is having contractions now. It's probably Braxton-Hicks, fake contractions. (I'm secretly hoping I at least have time to pick up Luigi's Mansion tomorrow Nyaa)

It takes very little for me to get buzzed these days as well.

It's a sign we're getting old my friend. In the meantime tell the baby to wait, and there's a game to be played. God knows gaming isn't as fun when you're sleep deprived.

Same here....yet my girlfriend can not drink for ages and then pound 15 beers down & stay up until 2am no problem. Irish women are not normal that way.

What game is that?

The Irish are inhuman.... which is why I've been saying for the longest time we need an Irish forumite.
