I've yet to pick up Black Ops, because I'm still personally debating it.

The evolution of a FPS level design?

You could also put "the evolution of Final Fantasy!" Nyaa

LOL Oh GG. What have you done? The video quality doesn't help much either. Anyway if one has a 360 or PS3 they'd be better off getting that version. Nyaa

They'd be better off getting Goldeneye, it's way better than single player Black Ops. Forget about the graphics, the level design and balance of AI and weapons smokes it. Single player GE is better than all the COD campaigns I've played.

I'd never judge a PS360 game by the Wii version and vice versa. And I'd never preclude the purchase of one game for another in the genre.

That sounds pretty judgmental, sorry.

Aspro, the COD games on Wii are content wise virtually identical. Treyarch makes sure that all the level design is the same, the AI is the same, the cutscenes are the same, the weapons are the same. The graphics is where the difference comes through. The actual design of COD single player levels feels lame compared to the design of Goldeneye.

So why the fuck is there still no direct feed of BOWii? Is GG the only person who bought it? Some people on GAF had said they'd get it on midnight launch and post videos, where are they? Some of the footae looked okay, the level geometry seeemed smooth enough, and some effects like fire but if there's really no noticable lighting and shit textures (or rather, shittier than MW/WaW, they had pretty low res textures) then wtf were they doing... Try the MP and Zombie mode and shit GG, my guess is that multiplayer wise it will be more fully featured and worthwhile than GE at least? Although I guess for people who mostly play single player it's GE or nothing.

There are a couple of direct feed videos in the thread, the youtube ones. Remember that we are like 7 hrs ahead. Most people are in bed and then at work all day. US impressions should come after 5pm US time so like 11pm for us.

I know Dimps made Colors.

I was saying how Dimps focused on what made the Sonic games so fun with Colors instead of adding a bunch of lame gameplay levels that Sonic Team did like in Unleashed, Black Knight, etc.

Sonic Team is making Colors, Dimps has nothing to do with it. (well they are working on the DS version). IGN doesn't know who made the game.

Now I don't even know who made the game.

Okay more Black Ops wii impressions.

Infinite respawning is a strong term, but yeah in the vietnam level it feels like it. Not so much in other levels nicely, in fact I think I might bump the difficulty level up.

The Vietnam level is everything I hate about COD in one level. It's linear and I mean really linear, with you following a trench tunnel, not even with as much room for gameplay as the trench level in WaW. The graphics in this level are meh and when you have to climb this slope the framerate start sputtering. The framerate actually negates the smooth controls and makes everything a jittering struggle.

They also want you to defend a position for a limited period of time which I hate, I like being able to move freely and attack.

And then suprise! You have to destroy some tanks with a rocket launcher. It's a little more interesting because you can guide the rockets flight path in real time using the analog stick. But you are also being ferried about on a jeep so have no control as to where you go, so it's almost like a lightgun game segment.

The level after you rappel through a window and wow, it looked really nice with great colour contrast and fidelity, I was really enjoying it but then 5 minutes later the game froze the screen and repeated the same 3 seconds of dialogue on a loop. I was not pleased!

Anyway the level before vietnam you sneak onto this rocket base, well, the game sort of stages everything for you, it's not like Goldeneye where you would properly sneak.

The level is decent although there are a few difficult corridors with the same old move to point, to trigger next sequence or your AI actually doing something. Weapons feel really nice, they have this machine gun with only 20 bullets but it's rate of fire is really fast. And since you take damage when out of cover it's really useful and satisfying to pop out and smoke a few guys before ducking back for cover and reloading.

honestly the controls in the game are near perfect, all I had to do was up the horizontal turn speed. I haven't spotted different pre-loaded defaults it all seems to have just been tuned to a great degree and all you have to do is sort of nudge it a little here and there.

The game handles crouching and lying down the same as the other Wii games, C button. But for some reason Black Ops doesn't have the little white man figure showing you what position you are in so often you have to just press the button to see if you are standing up or not. In terms of buttons it all feels great, I guess having jump on the UP position on d-pad isn't nice but you mostly just Z-button vault to get over stuff anyway.

Zombies is interesting. I haven't played LFD or zombies in COD as the Wii version of WaW didn't have it.

You are holed up in this large mansion type room with zombies breaking in. You start with a pistol, interestingly it's all points based. When you kill one of them you pick up points and headshots get you more. You then use those points to buy weapons and even to do stuff like open doors.

The zombies pretty much instantly kill you if they touch you though. Seems like it would be really fun online and the great controls make headshots a breeze. They do say "Someone should turn the power on first" but there is no onscreen indicator for where the damn thing is, I guess I have to use points to open a door first.

BTW you just run up to something the screen then asks you onscreen "Do you want to unlock this door or buy this weapon" and you just press Z for yes. It's not intrusive at all.

Okay played a free for all deathmatch online.

Smooth as butter, no framerate problems. Played this level set in one of those fake towns that the US used to test atomic bombs at. It was fairly ugly with poor textures.

Hey, I was pretty good, the controls make it easier to aim and more enjoyable. laugh

I came into the match halfway through but I'm pretty sure I smoked most of them as they ran about like chickens while I camped out and popped out of cover to pick them off. Which was tough as they gave me a weapon with semi-automatic fire.

One thing I don't like is that when you are shot and lying on the ground you can still shoot with your pistol but it says on screen "hold Z for cowards way out" i.e suicide. But I use Z for camera lock so if I'm already holding down Z for camera lock, when I'm on the floor the game automatically takes me holding down Z for quitting.

You know I'm kinda disappointed with the Black Ops reviews. I guess most are taking the multiplayer into account. But the single player shows little progression and the same old COD foibles.

But while the campaign is little more than a very nicely decorated corridor, there are lots of fun things to do inside it. There's the Dragon's Breath shotgun with incendiary shells, shooting enemies off motorbikes with a shotgun and cocking it one-handed while jumping over a ridge. Forget the setting, Call of Duty is about shooting fast, dying often and watching a good-looking set-piece, and on that level Black Ops unquestionably delivers.

It's like the game gets a free pass these days because of the flash. The game almost feels like sitting on a theme park ride and watching as stuff happens. That's not good gameplay, the Vietnam trench level is a corridor travesty that feels like it came out of the late 90s. Just because a corridor has great HD graphics it gets a free pass for feeling immersive.

And this: "shooting enemies off motorbikes with a shotgun and cocking it one-handed while jumping over a ridge. " is a throwaway crappy segment where you barely have any control and fire the occasional shot which seems to auto aim anyway.

CVG Black Ops review said:

Disappointingly, the single-player campaign is beset by the exact same problem we complained about in the previous three Call of Duty instalments; namely, unspectacular enemy AI.

Just like in Modern Warfare and, perhaps worse so, World at War, you'll often feel like you're fighting against sheer numbers rather than actual intelligent opponents.

Foes will infinitely spew from every window, doorway and rooftop - often running straight towards you, guns blazing - until you activate whichever trigger point that stops them appearing in their droves, whether it be an objective or proximity point to a building.

The spawning issue is far more tactically damaging than the intelligence of the enemy forces themselves - though it ultimately doesn't ruin the experience.

And it still gets a 9.3.

CVG said:

We're still desperate to see one of the CoD devs take the Halo approach; sticking you in a courtyard with a set number of clever, defined opponents, and then letting you pick your tactics. Looks like we're going to be kept waiting on that one...

Then play Goldeneye already. Wait, this is Andy Robinson, he reviewed both GE and Black Ops. WTF?

CVG said:

But you'd be a fool not to love the campaign - our favourite in the series so far

Guess I'm a fool then, COD4 is better than this. This games levels are interupted by flashbacks and cutscenes and then in real time with throwaway sequences like riding a motorbike or sitting on top of a jeep that drives itself.

1up Black Ops review said:

there's a fantastic prison break that begins unlike any other COD -- but sadly ends with you unloading a minigun on legions of badguys followed by an on-rails car chase. And this pattern of starting novel and different only to end as a typical COD shooting gallery shows up a little too frequently.

The gunplay remains the mostly familiar, "use the Left trigger to quickly snap-to and aim-at your foe and tap the Right trigger to shoot." In fact, at times, it almost feels as though Black Ops is tuned to be a bit easier than Modern Warfare -- among other things, the snap-to/auto-aim feels faster and the the hitboxes on enemies feel a bit larger. Some rooms in Black Ops can be finished by just alternating between Left/Right triggers without much thought. True, strong gunplay is a signature of the franchise, but now that we're in the seventh installment, these levels of shooting foes who either rush at you or toss grenades a-plenty, get tiresome. In fact, this sense of "COD deja vu" hits harder when you run into an honest-to-goodness "infinitely respawning enemies" moment in the campaign. On top of that, while the game usually stays at a steady 60 frames-per-second, I noticed a few significant framerate drops (mostly in missions during the Vietnam War), which still stands out despite Black Ops' odd propensity for numerous slow-motion sequences.

Yup.

Also it looks like the HD version has the same frame rate trouble on that troublesome vietnam trench level.

Metro Black ops review said:
Anything that isn't shooting happens only under the tightest controls, whether it's the occasional slow motion sequence, the almost quick time event style vehicle sections or the heavily scripted sieges and escapes. In a lesser game this mollycoddling would have seemed intrusive, but here the high level of showmanship quietens almost all such complaints.

Free pass.

This level looks decent. The snow level in GoldenEye (right) is way better visually though.

Anyway, it looks like the MP is mostly intact, most people don't buy this series for the limited SP anyway so I guess it's good for fans, overall it's on par with the previous ports thanks to the added features, DLC support etc, despite the hit in visuals. Look at the controls though, pointer left, CC right, lol. Pointing guy is good.

I played Black Ops on PC. It doesn't look great. After GoldenEye it feels like a janky game honestly, at least the 1st level. And it's not like I thought GoldenEye was perfect, there was a lot of room for improvement in that game but it was mostly good fun. I don't know if I'll even finish this campaign, I finished MW and MW2's and enjoyed both (the 1st much more so) but this feels worse somehow, I didn't enjoy any of it so far. Some screens.

I know how this feels. It's because Goldeneye has better level design and the AI is so much better. And you can approach the gameplay how you want to with stealth or action. Black Ops single player is like a simple retro FPS game with great presentation (well on systems other than wi).
