Overlord Dark Legend Joystiq preview
This manifestation of the Overlord formula gives players a greater degree of control over their minions that any other. Within moments of grabbing the Wii Remote (used for controlling them) and Nunchuk (moves the Overlord and performs his attacks) we were sicking our sickening, imp-like crew on enemies like we'd been doing it for ... well, longer than 10 minutes. Off they went, lobbing fireballs at range and jumping onto enemies to saw their heads off. Saw their heads off.
The area of the game we explored -- which was early in the overall story -- didn't have much to do, but it did manage to prove third-parties can "get" Wii and produce original games for the system which feel fresh, don't overdo the motion controls or prove to be total minigame fests.
IGN preview
The first thing you'll notice is that the game looks really good. The Overlord wreaks havoc through lush, expansive environments, the game runs in widescreen, and the character animation is very realistic. To put things in perspective, the other IGN Xbox and PC editors at the event all stopped to look at Overlord: Dark Legend and said, "man, this looks really good." This is one of the prettier Wii games we've seen
Playing the game, it was obvious the developers designed the controls for the Wii. While the analog stick moves the Overlord, the pointer function of your remote will direct your minions and spells. Basically, the B button will send minions and the A button will call them back to your side. Tapping left and right on the D-pad will cycle through your minion types, and down will select them all. Up on the D-pad will activate your spells. Using pointer controls makes it easier to send minions to multiple locations. You can also hold down the B button and then point to sweep all your selected minions at once
Metroid prime new play control IGN preview
The controls mimic the Metroid Prime 3 layout, but can be tweaked to fit the player's style. By default the first-person Wii Remote controls are a bit on the loose side, but you can change up the configuration in the option menu to tighten it up. The original Metroid Prime featured lock-on heavy shooter controls and that's carried over into the Wii update, but you can opt to not lock on and still have pinpoint precise targeting thanks to the accuracy of the Wii Remote pointer. Shooting, by default, is on the A button with the jumping mapped to the B trigger. Changing visors is handled by holding down the minus button and pointing to the visor needed for that situation. Lock-on's on the Z trigger of the nunchuk, and if you need to fire off a missile or other weapons (after you've earned them, natch), those are on the D-pad.
Though the game is now more than six years old and considered a "last generation" game, Metroid Prime is still quite a looker in its updated Wii conversion. Most of the game assets are from the GameCube game – detailed visuals running at 60 frames per second. The engine now runs at true wide-screen and doesn't suffer from any sort of artificial stretching. The exception is the title menu's full-motion video running behind the interface, which admittedly looks a bit rough in its compression and is definitely being stretched to fit in widescreen. Overall the game holds up extremely well and doesn't look as dated as you might expect out of a half-decade old last generation title…a testament to Retro Studios' technical prowess during its early days.
Broken sword directors cut IGN preview
It was a combination of Nintendo's newfound audience and the company's focus on more tactile control systems that really convinced Revolution to push ahead with development, it seems. Broken Sword seemed like the prime candidate to shift the aging genre from the PC to the modern interactive entertainment hub most normal people would refer to as the living room. Of course, there are still those loyal fans to think about – and, as Cecil points out, a quick and dirty port to Wii and DS wouldn't have been in anyone's interests.
Instead, Revolution has extended the original core game with new content that respectfully compliments the old. Most significantly, The Director's Cut explores original female protagonist Nico's background – specifically, her murky, mysterious past – that was only ever hinted at in the first game. It's content that fleshes out old relationships and introduces new ones over the course of its several-hour run-time. Impressively, it's been subtly interwoven into the original plot – making for a lengthy title that should prove satisfying to both old-hands and newcomers alike.
Mass Effect 2? More like Mass ERRECT 2!
Badass.
So Climax, the guys doing Overlord Dark Legend are confirmed to be doing a Wii game published by Konami. Some GAF guys reckon its a Silent hill game.
An ON-rails Silent Hill game, perhaps? Silent Hill: Pyrimid Head Cronicles?
Most probably.
I was just watching some madworld videos. Forgetting the visuals and all that the game it most reminds me of is Final Fight and I love that game.
It definitely looks fun. Day 1 for me for sure. Bozon says it gets pretty tough too.
Mass Effect 2? Freakin' awesome. Yeah it's short, it is just a teaser after all, but seeing any news on this game is fantastic. I really hope that this game makes it for the end of this year but it's highly likely it won't. Still really looking forward to the downloadable content scheduled to come out for the first game.
Watch-in-HD
So Edge I remember you telling me about Overlord before. Are you interested in the sequel and prequel at all?
Archangel, DLC for the first game not out? Huh, I thought they would just go onto the next game since its been rumoured for ages and now announced.
Good job with the updates GG, now treat yourself to a nice mic. You deserve it!
