That's actually why I'm involved in the convention scene in the way that I am now. I know so much about video games, comic books, and alcohol. It's all fairly useless (the alcohol party does get me invited to parties on occasion I suppose). After failing to figure out how to take these interests and make money I figured that at I could at least start sounding smart when I talked about them. Since I'm a good public speak and I'm sexy (not Steel sexy mind you, but who is?) I go to a bunch of the local Florida comic and sci-fi conventions and sit on panels about games and/or comics. It's not a huge deal but it lets me show off a bit and makes the audience think I'm some kind of industry person.
I am an expert on "www.thevgpress.com".
I've seen each episode of Buffy so many times that I'm probably an expert on that show by now.
Hmm, come to think of it, it's been a while since I seen that show . . . marathon time! 
Excellent thread, I feel the same way too. Obviously I know a ton on games. I know way too much about Star Wars. I know an awful lot about Hollywood movies, actors, etc. My pathetic Dolphins.
Its rare conversations about these topics come up in every day life which sucks.
- Games, clearly.
- 20th Century US presidential history.
- Small claims law, and most non-business civil claims (US, specifically California).
- Welding and metal work. General engineering and construction.
- Baseball after 1998.
- An uncanny ability to herd cattle. Seriously, people comment on my ability to control a herd. I like to think the cattle know on some level I am a vegan so help me out.

I know more about Doom than just about anybody. The only thing that's stopping me is its programming. I could never really get into the level editting and modding scene. Nonetheless, I still know an extensive amount of the games' mechanics, the quirks, glitches, and exploits that make the 1's and 0's do what they do.

The topic of this thread is something that's troubled me many times over the course of my life. I have no fields of greatly in depth expertise. In the same way I have no specialist interest which I will dedicate a very large part of my life to so that I know more about than anyone else. And in the same way that I have no particular talent, or calling.
I am good at most things I tried my hand at, so I feel like a bit of a jack of all trades. I'm also interested in a number of things, especially music, art, videogames (obviously), photography, football, films ... and I know a great deal about certain specialist areas within those but not enough about anything so it makes me feel like an expert (even though others have in the past treated me that way on occasion).

You make a very good point. In fact many times I wished I had studied something which is very directly applicable and which gives one a very good idea of what jobs they should be looking for. Instead I have degrees in Theoretical Physics and Pure Mathematics. The only one more useless when it comes to helping you know what to do or giving you employment options would be Philosophy ... and I was actually very tempted to do that

So that makes me wonder what other useless depths of knowledge we all hold here. I can start by stating I have been a longtime master of The Simpsons. It's dwindled a bit over the years, removed from my youth of reruns being played 8 times a day, but I'm still good as long as you don't count anything after the first 12 seasons. I am also the master of web browsers, and obscure free software.
