Game recomendations are kinda 20/80 with me. About 20% of the recommendations I get turn out to be games that I enjoy; the other 80% I just don't care for at all. I do take the word of users more than the so-called "professional" reviewers, but I have to be very careful with anyone's suggestion. Thankfully, I've played games long enough to have a good idea of what I'll like and what I won't. My problem is that I like to experiment with games, and that usually backfires on me. However, every once in a while, I'll find a game that was totally worth the risk (Ouendan, Animal Crossing, and Electroplankton all come to mind).
But did you just take a chance or did someone specific reccomend it to you?
Off the cuff I remember UpInFlames pushing The Warriors and San Andreas, both were okay-ish but I didn't really take to either. The Warriors had some neat ideas that were better fleshed out in Bully.
Bully is awesome BTW.
Recently I finally caved and bought Perfect Dark Zero because of Edgecrusher, that didn't work out.
I bought Deadly Creatures because of Leo's thread. Didn't work out. It's solid and all but didn't do it for me.
Friend recommendations still have about the same 50-50 shot that I get from professional reviews. After 25+ years of gaming my instincts are the best thing for me, and when I follow them I usually end up pretty happy. Likewise when I go against my gut feeling (i.e. Little King's Story) I end up disappointed.
There are of course exceptions, like when Leo recommended Devil Survivor (never would have touched that game on my own and enjoy it), but I still have yet to find anyone whose tastes match up with mine closely enough that I'd trust them implicitly with reccommendation.

This tells me there is something wrong with your guts.

I took a chance on AC and Electroplankton, but Ouendan was specifially suggested to me by two different friends of mine; I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it. You suggested Endless Ocean, which I also enjoyed quite a bit.
On the opposite side, a good friend of mine suggested Phoenix Wright DS, but I didn't like it much. It's a neat concept, but the game just didn't do it for me.

Yeah, I don't ask for recommendations either, but I still get them fairly often. I don't mind at all as long as the person doesn't get mad at me for not liking their suggestion.
I do get asked for recommendations a lot (by family, friends, co-workers), which I don't care to do, because I always feel bad when I suggest something to someone, and they don't like it.
Turned out to be one of my favorite games of all time. I thanked her after I got hooked.

That's the best way to read all of your posts.

The only one that comes to mind is Yarcofin suggesting that Kablooey is the worst game ever. I played it -- he's right.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobileOverlord 2 thanks to you GG. Not that it was a direct recommendation, but who has those?
It's not here yet, but I'll let you know when it is.

Aw Phoenix Wright?

People need to bother me more to buy this. I actually ordered it, waited for weeks and the site closed the order so I never got it. And I was outbid on ebay. Its like the world doesn't want me to own it.

Overlord 2? You mean the PS3 one or are you talking Dark Legend because overall I said it was OK and had a lot of faults, not enough ambition or decent level design. I liked it a lot to begin with but the pacing was languid in that it didn't pick up when it needed to and the technical faults just marred what could have been a decent experience. It's a 7.5 game, maybe lower.
But I assume you got it cheap like I did so there isn't much to complain about.
Since being on forums I've often taken the word of forumers or user opinions over reviews. I've put more weight behind them at times.
Are there specific instances of you buying certain games because of other people and if so how did it work out for you?
