Okay so for me 2009 will not go down at the greatest year of gaming.  The best games I played this year were actually released in earlier years like The World Ends With You.  As far as what was released this year nothing really stood out to me as an epic game that will ever go on my favorites of all time.

Most of the games I liked pushed me further into the niche nerd category than ever.  Maybe if I had access to more of the really good mainstream titles that were on the HD systems like SFIV and RE5 that would have changed.  But I'm stuck with the Wii and the DSi so I made do with what I had.

All that being said there were a number of games that I really enjoyed.  So here's the rundown of my top 10.

10.  Art Style: BOXLIFE

This little game provided me with a hours upon hours of gameplay. That's pretty remarkable considering that it exclusively uses one simple game mechanic is: cut out squares on the board to make boxes.  Somehow this ended up being mezmorizing.  Add in some quirky music and a customizeable home that acted as a goal to keep pushing you further and you've got a game that's very hard to put down.

9.  MadWorld

A lot of people didn't like this game. I won't fault them for it, as it was very repetitive.  It did feature 2 things that I absolutely love in a game - unique art style and a great sense of humor.  And in those two areas it scored huge for me so that I could overlook some repeitive fighting. However, while the actions of killing people got a little old, the sheer variety of ways you could do it really impressed me.  Plus this game probably had my single favorite final boss fight in years.  Didn't see that one coming, but I probably should.

8.  Muramasa: The Demon Blade

This is the best looking game I have ever played. Period.  It's like watching a Japanese painting come to life.  That alone would probably put it in the top 10, but throw in some extremely crisp fighting and you've got a game that's worth anyone's money. Story is a little tough to follow at times, but the need to see what the next level looks like will keep you pushing onward.

7.  Wii Sports Resort

The best minigame collection ever made.  The Kendo fighting, archery, wake boarding, and plane flying are things of legend.  And really, aside from maybe canoing, there isn't a bad game in set.  Anyone can pick it up and play it, and it pretty much guarantees a good time whether you're with friends or solo.

6.  Shin Megami Tensei - Devil Survivor

This is my favorite strategy RPG that was been released in quite some time.  Good tough challenges, well told (and dark) story, surprisingly good characters, and some truly awesome demons to summon.  There was a learning curve to this game that I didn't expect - particularly trying to learn what spell names were call, but overall extremely solid game for any fan of the genre.

5.  Art Stlye: PictoBits -

Possibly the best game to come out for DSiWare since it started this year.  It has the trademark quality of all great puzzle games - simple fun gameplay that just keeps getting harder and harder and harder until you start questioning if you finishing the levels because you're good or just lucky.  Plus it throws in sprites of classic NES characters and remixes of their theme songs.  What's not to love here?

4. Bit.Trip Beat

Really good Retro gaming here. . . and I mean REEAAAAALLLY Retro gaming.  Tough to go back further for inspiration than Pong you know?  But that's what the guys at Gaijin Games did and they made something that's just awesome.  Use the old Pong gameplay, throw in some trippy 4 bit inspired graphics and music, and make it all a rhythm game.  Barely a day goes by without me playing this for 15 minutes or so (until I get frustrated by it and swear I won't touch it again until tomorrow).

3.  New Super Mario Bros. Wii

You can never go wrong with good classic 2-D Mario (assuming the devs aren't scared to put some real challenge in it).  There's not much more to say about how much fun the game is, in both single and multiplayer (who actually expected the multiplayer to be fun??).  It may not quite be as good as its predecessors of SMB3 and SMBW, but the fact that people are having discussions about whether it is or isn't prove just how good of a game it is.

2.  Punch-Out

This game was so much better than it had any right to be.  It was the classic Punch-Out wrapped up with new graphics and then oh so much more.  The boxers have more presonality than ever.  Challenge Mode gives you special goals to go for.  Title Defense mode took this game to a whole new level of difficulty.  I can honestly say there aren't too many games where I get beaten 100+ times and still come back for more.  Best of all the game still stays fun even after you've gone through it all.  Beating up Glass Joe is just as much fun as getting your ass handed to you by Sandman.  Love it.  This game is the model that any classic game should follow for revival.

1.  Rune Factory: Frontier

Rune Factory Frontier is an interesting game.  There's a lot to do here: Farming, socializing/dating, monster raising, fighting and exploring in dungeons, blacksmithing, cooking, and more.  I don't think there's any one thing that this game does that can't be found better in other games, but at the same time there's no other game that does so much and does it all this well.  You could sort of describe this game as a Jack of All Trades and master of none.

That's not enough to top my list though.  What makes the game special is how Rune Factory wraps all of that together.  The music and graphics have a nice soft feel to them and compliment each other very well.  The Runies floating around all over the place really give the land a magical fantasy feel that so many other fantasy games lack.  The people in the village are very active and communicate with each other as well as with you so there's an actual feeling of commnity in the town.  There's dozens of anime cutscreens that come at unexpected time and feel like a real treat to break things up.  Plus there's tons of hot anime chicks.  That's always a bonus right?

So in my mind this is the kind of game that I could play for a year and still be happy with it.  To me that's what makes a game of the year.

Nice list, I will have to try out this Rune Factory game when it hits hobo price. Hell did it even release in the UK?

You are a little weird in that you haven't liked several critically acclaimed titles, Rhythm Heaven, Little Kings story etc.

Nice choice of words. "Critically acclaimed" aka "simple enough for a douchebag videogame reviewer who as a grown adult has job that only requires the mentality of a 13 year old who spends his free time either playing games or molesting small woodland creatures with a stick."

Seriously when a game like Rhythm Heaven is "critically acclaimed" it makes me question all reviews.  The whole point of that fucking game is to tap the screen.  Just tap. Tap. Tap.  Hey nice job!! You're tapping the screen. FUN FUN FUN!!!  Here's an idea.  Next time just sit around and tap your dick instead. At least at the end of the day you'll have something to show for it.

you can reduce the playing of any videogame to simple actions like pressing buttons, pushing analog knobs, clicking a mouse etc

yes you can, but in most cases there's at least 2 simple actions instead of just 1. Tap.  Tap.  Tap.  There was more variation in XX/XY.

Stoopid Nintendo! We wouldn't even be HAVING this discussion had they released the BEST rhythm game for the DS in EU and the U.S. rather than RH!

I can respect your choices. Punch-Out is the only weird game in there.

I don't think I could even make a Top 10 list made up of games that were only released in 2009. The only games that I can think of that I have played that actually came out this year are NSMB Wii, Wii Sports Resort and Bit.Trip Beat. Everything else was from years prior, I think. Sad

Punch-Out a take on an  absolute classic game is the weird one. Not the farming, cooking, drinking, raising monsters game. Right. Nyaa
