Have you ever wondered why people love a particular game or franchise? Ever felt disconnected from the gaming community? Now is the time to ask about a game or series you've never understood the appeal of.

My one is Devil May Cry. It's never appealed to me.

So why do people love it and continue to love it?

What games would you like to know about in terms of appeal?

Grand Theft Auto.

You know how people claim that fetch quests are the low point in any Zelda game? (Triforce quest, tear collecting, tadnotes, etc)

Well Grand Theft Auto is nothing more than a giant fetch quest.

I'm interested in Devil May Cry. I may get the PS3 HD collection when it comes out.

I loathe Dante as a character. Cannot stand him in any way, shape, or form. That being said I did enjoy the gameplay from what I played in the first and 3rd games. Not enough to really be a fan of the series.

Metroid Prime would be the series I don't get. It combines the fun of a first person shooter with scanning.... and scanning... and more scanning. Seriously is that the game?? Why the hell is this so critically acclaimed? I gave the first one a shot and couldn't go on after 5 or 6 hours. Too dull and boring. Even at $6 I thought it was overpriced.

I suppose I should say Metal Gear Solid. I've never actually played any of the games in the series though. It's strange since it's this huge epic series and yet I can't generate enough interest to even rent one of the games. Maybe one day I'll download MGS1 for the Xperia and finally try it. Dunno....

You might think it is bad, but for people suffering a sleeping disorder, it is a godsend

The scanning sucked! I hated it, but loved every thing else about Metroid Prime.

I disliked the sequels, though.

Dante can be an annoying character but he can be pretty cool at times. I love the game itself as the gameplay is great and there's some excellent boss fights. I do really like most of the other characters in the DMC games like Vergil, Lady, Trish, and Nero. I'm definitely picking up the DMC HD Collection.

Noby Noby boy of course.

It's shit.

It's worse than shit. It's like if a shit took a dump and that dump vomited, the result would be less shitty than noby noby boy.

For me the appeal is the chase, which is usually part of the fetching. It can be fun and even exhilarating trying to escape or chase someone. And the ability to just mess around and do random stuff without breaking the game is fun. Also the music can sometimes evoke a nostalgic feeling. It all depends on the missions themselves though and some games have more inventive missions than other games.

For me, Metroid Prime is like one massive Zelda dungeon. I derive enjoyment from working within the puzzle and gradually unlocking the map and powers, it's very rewarding to do that. It also has a sense of isolation and exploration to it, making you feel like the lone person on a hostile planet. It's superbly designed and you don't gave to scan anything. The later games has easy coloured scanning too.

Agree with GG.  The sense of isolation in Metroid Prime added immensely to the atmosphere.  The puzzle solving and how things opened up the more power-ups Samus gained was amazing.  Also trying to discover the plot and what deeper role the Phazon was playing as well as to discover the lore and history of the planet through scanning the relics left by a race long gone was thoroughly enjoyable to me.  So I loved scanning everything, I thought it was a great way to deliver the subplot and put your actions in context.

Re: GTA I too fail to see the fascination with most of them.  The one exception was Chinatown Wars.  I thought it was huge fun and I had a blast playing it for well over 40 hours.

Re DMC: The first one was alright.  Don't feel passionate about it one way or another.  Didn't bother with the second one.  The 3rd one I couldn't play because it was too hard.  The 4th one was like the first one.  Just an OK game.  Nothing brilliant but certainly not bad.

Re MGS: I really enjoyed the first one.  I haven't played any of the others yet but I will try to remedy that when the HD collection gets released next month.  I can see why it's a series so highly revered.

Metroid Prime easily has the best storytelling in any game. Scanning for the fucking win.

Story's kinda crap, but whatever.

Anyone else kinda feel like Splinter Cell made MGS seem old hat? At the time that is.

The controls and camera just felt so right in comparison.

Okay, Portal is a game that I don't understand the appeal of. Honestly, if it wasn't given away as a freebie attached to Half Life, would anyone have bought it outright at full price at launch?

It looks so weird and confusing, it just puts me off.

The appeal is waning but it was originally very satisfying and made you feel like a ninja and super powerful as you picked people off. It was like a predator simulator, you were the lion and everybody else was just meat to be killed then eaten. Plus, in games usually speed and flash are used so it was refreshing to find a slow paced, yet tense and satisfying experience.
