Nintendo has announced that Punch Out is coming to the Wii on May 18th.

Not a lot of details have been announced aside from the date and this little blurb from a Nintendo rep:

"It will be interesting to see too how gamers react. I think they're going to react great to the motion control capabilities of the Wii with that game because you're used to hitting buttons and doing your blocks and your throws and kind of dodging out of the way, but now you can do all that with your own body, so it's going to feel you're right there as a boxer." - Charlie Scibetta, Senior Dir. of Corporate Communications, Nintendo of America

So it sounds like they're opting for more of a Wii Boxing style rather than the traditional controls from the NES and SNES.  I hope that they do a good job, as I was never 100% impressed with the boxing controls on Wii Sports.

Also the following boxers have been mentioned or shown in previews:

Glass Joe

Von Kaiser

King Hippo

Soda Popinski

No word has been mentioned if any new boxers are showing up, but I really hope so.  Half the fun of Punch-Out was seeing what insane boxer was next.  But if it's all the same let's just leave Don Flamenco retired.

I just posted the press release on GG weekly!

Here is the Wii-part

New Games Announced for Nintendo Systems

REDMOND, Wash., Feb. 26, 2009 – While everyone is still buzzing about the upcoming April 5 launch of the Nintendo DSi™ system, video game fans will have plenty of great games and experiences to keep them busy. Nintendo has an extensive, diverse library of about 120 games on the way for both the Wii™ and Nintendo DS™ systems. Upcoming Nintendo-published video games for Wii include:

Excitebots™: Trick Racing has elements that make it one of the more unique racing games on the market. It launches April 20 and lets everyone in the family use the Wii Wheel™ accessory in unique and changing environments, play fun minigames and perform crazy tricks in a game that builds on the Excitebike™ and Excite Truck™ franchises.

Donkey Kong® Jungle Beat™, originally made for the Nintendo GameCube™ system, launches May 4 with newly added motion controls. It's the latest in Nintendo's New Play Control! series of games.

Punch-Out!!™ launches May 18 and brings back all of the fun of the beloved, classic NES® game that thrilled players in the early 1990s. Boxers battle as iconic hero Little Mac as they fight their way through a cast of new and familiar boxing opponents on their quest to win the coveted WVBA (World Video Boxing Association) Championship Belt.

Nintendo's downloadable WiiWare service continues to be a showcase for new games, new concepts and new ideas. A selection of upcoming titles includes:

DS part

Rhythm Heaven™ is an infectious video game that has been a huge hit in Japan. Players tap and slide the stylus on the touch screen in time to the beat. This fun, stylized game launches April 5.

A new entry in the Personal Trainer series is Personal Trainer™: Walking, which launches May 25. Personal Trainer: Walking tracks users' progress and makes going for a walk a little more fun. It comes with two pedometers that users can wirelessly connect to their Nintendo DS system when they return home.

In The Legendary Starfy™ game, which launches June 8, players dive into a spectacular undersea adventure with Starfy, the legendary hero of Pufftop. Players swoop into enemies like a shooting star, glide over bottomless chasms and transform into powerful creatures to help a mysterious, bunny-eared visitor find his lost memory.

It seems so soon. I cant get a handle on new games when there are no previews and they're out in a couple of months. I hope they use motionplus because wii boxing was fun, but could be inaccurate as hell. Small jabs were fine but as soon as you started throwing hooks and uppercuts, it lost you.

I was never into punchout so I'm just not into this game as much.

I loved Punch-Out on the SNES so I'm looking forward to this one.

Given how small Little Mac is, there should be a super crotch punch. Or at least the ability to use the testes as a punch bag in training.

This is the best news I've heard so fa. We have nothing to worry about at least in regards to the controls of the game:

Control options:

* Motion Control (Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers)
Punch-Out!! uses the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers to simulate throwing punches. Use the Nunchuk to throw a left punch and the Wii Remote to throw a right punch.

* Classic Control (Wii Remote NES™ style)
Fans of the NES version and core gamers will be excited to see
Nintendomag-glass_10x10.gif has also included the option to play Punch-Out!! using the classic layout from the original NES controller. Use the 1 and 2 buttons along with the cross pad to throw hooks and jabs or to dodge.

Good thinking. Better thinking would be to use motionplus. It's going to be horrible like wii sports boxing otherwise.

KEY INFORMATION
One of the biggest names in boxing returns after a 15-year hiatus. Grab a Wii Remote™ controller in one hand and a Nunchuk™ controller in the other and step back into the ring with a modern update of the classic Punch-Out!!

* Little Mac is back! Everyone’s favorite underdog from the 1980s joins the best of the original Punch-Out!! cast in a modern re-imagination of the series. Players will find familiar names like Glass Joe, King Hippo and trainer Doc Louis. These boxers come to life again in cel-shaded 3-D, complete with hilarious fighting animations and back stories that capture all the fun and flair of the original Punch-Out!! games.

* The motion-sensitive controls of the Wii console mean that when players throw punches, Little Mac throws punches as well. Additionally, you can control hooks and jabs by combining motion control with control-stick movement. The motion-sensing Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers turn real-life swings into on-screen punches, so anyone can play. The game can also be played with classic NES-style controls by turning the Wii Remote sideways.

Characters: Little Mac, Glass Joe, King Hippo, Doc Louis, Von Kaiser and other unannounced favorites.

Special powers/weapons/moves/features: Players can obtain special “Star Punches,” which allow Little Mac to take more Health from his rival in a single punch.

So, is this just a remake of the NES original? If it is, then I'll pass. I already have that game on VC.

No it's not a remake.  It features a lot of the original boxers from Punch Out, but there will be a number of new boxers as well, and likely a new final champion to fight.

It is now official, Punch Out now offers head to head competition.  Wonder if it's going to be online. . . nahhhhh that's far to desireable so Nintendo wouldn't want us to have it.  Still, nice to be able to play against a friend now.  Not real sure if Giga Joe is a great idea, but it does add one extra element that you're not going to get in the main game, so I guess it's not a bad thing.

I think what the real problem is, is that you guys are just a bunch of whores who know nothing and should just shut their pie holes.  Fair enough?  The game will be stellar.  Any more back talk from either of you and I'm sicking Dvader on you (assuming he can be pryed away from RE5).

LOL

Yeah I never played the NES or SNES games either so its hard for me to get excited about it. If it was wiiware I would consider it Nyaa It at least needs an online mode.

I am here. Anyone dare say anything bad about my Punch-Out now.

BTW anyone checking out that Best Game Ever contest at gamefaqs, I filled my brackets, I had Tetris and Punch-Out moving from the first round over Donkey Kong. For some stupid reason Donkey Kong beat out Punch-Out, who the fuck likes Donkey Kong?!?!  Who the hell sits around saying, oh man I need to play that classic Donkey Kong... NO ONE. Punch-Out is an all time classic that many play to this day, Donkey Kong is a name. Who plays Donkey Kong, seriously!

Donkey Kong isn't so bad, but it's nothing compared to the other two games.  DK was one of the first arcade games I ever played so it gets a lot of nostalgia points from me, but I'm right there with you.  I don't sit around with my hands in my pants thinking, "boy Donkey Kong would be a lot of fun right now."

Take that back!  Punchout fuckin' rules. Shame on you guys for never playing the original.   I want this one to be good and not just Wii Sports with a Punchout makeover.
