I think it's probably harder to reconcile the hundreds of thousands if not millions of virtual people I have killed, and that's not hard reconcile at all. The conclusion you have come to is correct: I have committed multiple genocides over the years, and have loved every minute of them. Somalia? Yeah, it was me.

Given that you live in the same country as me and have a gun you probably have more knowledge about these things, so if you wouldn't mind please elaborate on your country's gun policy. 
I'm against private gun ownership in democratic countries. People are emotional and if everyone can have access to a gun they just go out to cause shit when something happens in their life. Bottom line is, if some maniac runs into a school with a knife, you've got a much better chance of taking him down than if he has a shotgun.
I've shot a few hunting rifles in my time. My family is from Texas after all, so it's practically law. I don't particularly care for them though and I don't own one, nor do I ever plan to. I'm not entirely against gun ownership, but I think the laws do need to change on it. There's no reason for a civilian to ever own an automatic weapon for instance. Small handguns are okay for people who insist they need the personal protection and rifles are okay for hunting. Those things make sense (to a degree).
I'd also like to see the Brady Bill go back into effect. For those not aware of the law what it did was require a 3 day waiting period for anyone who wanted to own a gun. In that time background checks could be done on a person. With the internet and changes in technology we can do those background checks faster than ever, so the time to do the background check isn't necessarily needed which was the main arguement behind not having it, but that 3 day waiting period also acted as kind of a cool down period for people who might not have wanted a gun for a good reason.
Not being a fan of guns has also translated into my gaming habits. For the most part I play non-violent games or ones set in a fantasy setting (killing people with a sword is okay after all). I've never been very comfortable playing a game like GTA. I can reconcile those feelings a little more when I play a game like Red Dead Redemption or the Saboteur since they're period pieces and because of that almost hold a fantasy element to them. But contemporary games with lots of gunplay hold little interest for me.
People can modify semi-automatics to full automatics, like the Norweigen gunman. If people need rifles for huting then they shouldn't be sold to people who live in urban areas with no hunting grounds to be had. Why not just have rifle shacks on hunting premises that rent out rifles by the hour?
I've just shot hunting rifles, then various things during my army service. A G3A3 mostly. Obviously it's absolutely nothing like clicking a mouse or pushing a stick around or whatever else so the media making such connections are being retarded. Lightgun games are the closest you can get if they have actual iron sights or similar, but of course none of them have any real recoil. I'm against owning anything that isn't for hunting or similar (with required licences and all that stuff so you can't just go down the store and pick it up on a whim) and those should never be allowed to be carried outside their purpose. That's more or less how it is supposed to be over here by law but in Crete in particular pretty much everyone owns something that clearly isn't meant for hunting illegally, from handguns to much bigger things. Shit happens every so often, from vendettas to people getting killed @ weddings or other celebrations for example. It's a pretty dumb custom and the government isn't doing anything to stop it, sadly. But I guess we have bigger issues to worry about now.

Obviously I have shot real guns and they are so much more powerful than games and movies describe. All this running and spraying crap is such BS, you wont hit shit that way.
Not against the ownership of guns, I think you have a right to protection in your home. Now the whole concealed weapon thing we have here is a bit strange, anyone can get a license for that. Plus rifles that can easily be modified to automatic can be bought at gun shows. Hell a guy at the range this weekend set his rifle to automatic and my dad got to try it out. There is no reason for it, just grown men wanting to play soldier, might as well have joined the army I say. My dad is into collecting them now, he is not unstable so I know its fine, the issue is when some nut gets a hold of those guns. As for virtual guns, I love them, I love shooting anything that moves.
Our gun policy is pretty damn open. We have a right to bear arms so anyone that passes a background check can own a gun and keep it in private. There is also the option to get a concealed weapons permit, just take some two minute course from some dude, fill out an application, pass a background check and now you can be packing almost anywhere as long as its concealed. Its illegal to have automatic weapons, problem is that its not illegal to buy rifles that can easily be modded to become and automatic rifle. To me its all about the people, not the guns, the guns dont get up and shoot by themselves (thought that would make a cool movie). There needs to be far more security in who gets these things. The problem is that the guns are already out there, you make them hard to get and then only the criminals have them, now you are screwed.
I've never shot a real gun in my life. I'd love to, but there are no shooting ranges around here. At least not legal ones, lol. Here in Mexico is legal to own a gun (handguns of calibers allowed by the military) in you house for means of protection. You have to buy and register the gun through the National Defense Department. There are also permits for hunting guns.
I have to say, I have trouble reconciling my anti-gun philosophy with my gaming. Particularly when I pick up a gaming magazine and there is a gun on pretty much every page, in every advert. A non-gamer who flips through a gaming magazine must think we'll all gun nuts. I'm not sure it's required to reconcile my real-world philosophy with my contrary in-game actions because there is no link in reality between the two. The shooting in games is still not far removed from shooting galleries at fairs or Duck Hunt on the NES.
At the heart of all literature is conflict and the most direct path to conflict would be to introduce a gun into a story. So I understand why they are in games.

In the US gun ownership is secured by the constitution, so while I wish there were no guns SCOTUS has made it clear that the status quo is constitutional, therefore it is what it is (and not worth talking about/fighting etc...)
In Australia, from what I can gather, after a couple of mass murders the conservative party essentially banned guns. Farmers can have them, as can hobbyists, but you have to be registered with the police and they can drop by at any time to inspect your gun safe etc... You can also only own certain types.

I've shot a .357 Magnum several times, and a couple rifles with a friend of mine. It was fun, but hella loud. They were his guns; I don't own any myself, and don't plan to either.
I'm not against people owning guns for hunting or for self protection. Idiots, however, should not have them.

If nobody had guns then you wouldn't need a gun to protect yourself. Only the cops should have them, there should be an amnesty where you hand in your guns to be melted down.
