LOL

So...I DLed the Brütal Legend demo this afternoon on XBL, not sure of what to expect besides some killer metal tunes, but after an enthralling first playthrough, I am confident to say this game skyrocketed to "BUY" status.

Brütal Legend is an action adventure game designed by Tim Schafer, developed by Double Fine and published by EA. It has an impressive roster of characters that includes rock/metal legends such as Lemmy Kilmister, Ozzy Osbourne, Lita Ford, and Rob Halford; as well as a face-melting soundtrack that looks more like a love letter for fans of the genre, pure balls to the wall fretboard-scorching, high-pitched shrieking hymns of death, blood and sex.

The game is about a roadie of a "rock" band disappointed with his current situation, who gets involved in a freak accident and wakes up in a demon world filled with chaos, fire, blood and METAL. It's up to him to bring swift doom upon evil, like a tornado of leather, metal and ear-raping fretwork.

Gameplay is your standard 3rd person action fare, you wield two axes (one an actual axe, the other is an electric guitar, you new-age pussies Nyaa ) and mow down enemies using combinations of attacks. Animation is fluid and finishing moves are more than satisfactory, with the right amount of blood and dismemberment that you would expect from such a game. Some parts of the battlefield have sections that serve as simple environmental puzzles. Eventually, you'll meet a hot NPC that will join you for a while, aiding you in combat by unlocking some nice two-player attacks.

The game alternates foot and vehicle segments, both being (at least in the demo) linear. The demo ends with you fighting a huge snake demon and an interrupted french-kissing lesson.

I was interested already in the game because of the soundtrack, but tight gameplay and awesome dialogue/writing sealed the deal. Jack Black sounds actually cool and laid back, unlike his usual dork persona from so many movies, and the character he voices, the roadie Eddie Riggs, embodies everything that we genre fans love about rock/metal music.

This game is such a love letter for people like me, revolving around a musical genre that resists to die, that I can't help but buy it, play it louder than a thousand raging demons and headbang my way through the fiery pits of hell.

Most excellent indeed. Yeah I'm a huge metal-head myself as well having grown up with Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, and Judas Priest. Those were the staples of my youth. I totally loved the demo and this is a definite purchase for me as well. Jack Black does his role perfectly. My only disappoint is the lack of any Iron Maiden tunes which quite honestly should have been a given for this game. I don't think there's any Megadeth either which is a real shame also. Still this game kicks major ass.

Okay, Simple Question. Is it as good as God of War?

I'm a little burnt from my full-price release day purchase of Psychonauts.

Linear?

I thought it was supposed to be open world like Zelda, but instead of a horse you would have a hotrod.

Oh and Steel this is metal....

the character is more glen danzig than jack black which is definitely good.  even though he should really have been modeled after the archetypal metal god and leather daddy rob halford.  but he's supposed to be a lowly roaddie not a metal god (and steel said rob halford is in the game anyway) so i guess that's ok .

will definitely get this game when it's a bit cheaper.  not paying 40 quid for it

It will take an awesomesauce video review to sell me on this one. As someone who doesn't like the music, hasn't played Psychonauts and barely tolerates Jack Black. This game has the odds stacked against it.

I will be glad to read your impressions though guys.

Hard to say. I only played the demo. And never played God of War extensively. Although from my limited experience with GoW2, I don't think it's all that different, except for the sense of humor and rock music, and the lack of a chronically constipated lead character that looks like he's dealing with massive hemorroids at all times. To give you some perspective, I didn't find GoW all that hot either, I don't understand why people refer to it as if it was some sort of gold standard in action games, and just because of the soundtrack and overall theme, Brutal Legend is already better in my book than God of War.

The demo was linear, I don't know if there will be open environments in the full game. Judging from some cutscenes at the end of the demo, there will probably be open-world environments.

And you are wrong, as usual. This is metal:

For what it's worth, people at gaf that had exactly the same issues with music and Jack Black have thoroughly enjoyed the game. At least it does have humor, which seems to be paramount in your book, the only thing preventing it from being a perfect, game of the forever title would be the lack of furniture. Nyaa

See? This is where a demo would be handy, but your unbelievable cheapassness prevents you from picking up a used HDD from amazon or whatever.

Easy, if you headbang fast enough, your head motion starts to create static electricity because of your long hair, which in turn leads to electromagnetic attraction of iron ions in the environment. Eventually, a critical mass of iron ions is achieved, thus leading to the formation of iron molecules that bind with carbon (because in a mosh pit there are bound to be some pussy posers, they don't produce iron, they produce carbon because of so much exposure to shitty bands such as my chemical bromance, incubus, slipknot and korn or limp bizkit) in order to produce steel.

As the number of headbangers increases, so does the amount of steel, which slowly starts to grow towards the opposite shore, rendering a full steel bridge in about 2 hours (the standard duration of a Slayer concert).

So much wrong with this post it will make Bugsy have sleepless nights, yet it's still awesome.

first off.  i saw slayer live (about 10 years ago) and they played for 55 minutes (not 2 hours), not a note more.  and they were headlining.

secondly.  slipknot rocks so very hard and if any band produces steel by music... it is them (so don't use them as a an example of a carbon producing band).  i know it's cool to hate them because of the masks and suits and what not, but they are very heavy indeed.

*lays down some smooth techno tracks to listen to*

LOL I'm just giving you shit. I respect everyone's musical tastes, and I was partly joking given the nature of the thread. Having said that, Slipknot are far from my cup of tea, and far from heavy in my book. From my limited experience with the band, they happen to have some catchy riffs and their drummer's got some good chops, but they need to get rid of that vocalist and stop ruining their heavier songs by putting lame-ass choruses on them that sound to have been lifted out of a fucking Linkin Park album. It's like they start some songs being heavier than shit and by the middle of the song they become a bunch of pussies. Then again, I'm not one to berate whatever stuff people likes to listen to.

Yes, I want to be like all the cool kids! LOL I don't give two shits about the masks or suits. That's just attention whoring. GWAR was doing faaaaar more fucked up shit way before it was cool.

i know buddy i'm joking as well.  i think iowa is the closest slipknot came to being proper heavy.  that album is worth listening to.  i think the drummer's pretty good.

in any case as far as pop metal bands go i think they're leagues ahead of A7X, trivium, coheed, korn, deftones etc

I wouldn't compare this to God of War at all.  Of course, I only played the demo, but it was lacking a variety of moves that made GoW so awesome.
