I'm interested in how any of you find peace and calm in your lives.  Either on a regular basis -- like though exercise -- or in those moments of anxiety -- like when you just can't get to sleep while you contemplate your problems.

I get the feeling that with the constant interruption of what life is these days there are many who don't really know what  "peacefulness" is.

(No I'm not selling anything).

How much is this thing you're "not" selling?

Mainly it comes while walking, and even then, it's hit or miss.  Otherwise, it comes with acceptance of how things are.  Sometimes that's easier than others.

I don't know if I ever shared this story here or not.

On one of my trips to Las Vegas I took an extraordinary Helicopter Tour. It took off from an airport about 10 minutes from the strip. It flew over the strip and its many hotels. It passed over the Hoover Dam; Flew through the Grand Canyon and landed on a Mesa in the Canyon. There we had a Champagne lunch.

I did this with a friend whom I love more than anyone else in this world, but that is a whole other story.

NOTHING I have ever experienced has given me such a sense of peace before or since. It was incredibly humbling, seeing such a marvel first hand. Mesas that were 5 MILES away, looked like they were close enough to reach out and touch, simply due to their immensity. It was intensely beautiful but also made you feel very small and insignificant in the grand scheme of the world. THAT wasn't even the end of it though.

Once the helicopter engines were shut off. Once my friend and I walked away from the other people from the tour, we were greeted with SUCH a silence that would be IMPOSSIBLE to experience anywhere else. No honking of horns. No blowing of wind. No buzzing of electricity. There. Was. Nothing! It was in every sense of the word: Profound. It was awe-inspiring in its complete and utter quiet. Even just thinking about it now puts me at ease...

Then I remember, the friend who I went with, the one person I stayed in New York for, is no longer here with me... and I miss him more than anyone could ever know... and all the mental "noise" returns...

The trip cost around $600 or $700 dollars apiece, I believe. If you have the opportunity and the means, it's just something you HAVE TO experience at least ONCE in your lifetime! The trip in its entirety was a defining point in my life; the (somewhat cliche) sunset return to Las Vegas proper just as they were beginning to illuminate all of the Casino lights... THAT was just a small cherry on top of a perfect, perfect memory!

I'm a bubble bath man myself.  Perfect way to unwind for me is to just hang out in the bath tub, have a cocktail, and put on a podcast from someone I like; Kevin Smith, Adam Carolla or a couple others.

All kidding aside:

This really does beg the question: Do you ask this question just out of curiosity, or are you trying to find peace and calm and cannot?

I have found that I remain calm in almost any situation. Its to a fault, i believe its part of why I haven't gotten a job, I never get that down on myself or too high. I can brush off almost anything. Don't get me wrong, I have had my crying moments like everyone but its just a moment. I have had restless nights and I hate them but its like once every three months. If I am down a good game always helps.  I have great friends and family that love me and that creates a big secruity basket for me.

All kidding aside, I live a very tranquil life with no worries to speak of (not that my mind does not try to create them).  I started this thread to see what people did, what worked for them, and even to prompt people who don't have mechanisms in place to consider them.

In the past, when I did find it hard to turn off my brain at night, I would think of a river trail that I rode my bike on each weekend.  I'd go through the route in my mind, recalling most details.  It always put me to sleep.  This was much more preferred than my other methods before that (like counting backwards from 51, taking a breath between each number).

When I had a pool, a spa at night, or just floating in the pool during the day did the same trick.  Kinda.  Usually I'd drink at the same time, which in both cases was bad news given that you are de-hydrating in both a spa and the pool.

In terms of a regular way to give myself time to think these days I will go for a run -- always 4 miles.  If I don;t get a couple of those in (at least) in a week I get distressed).

If these things work then it means you don't actually have a problem with thoughts and what not floating around your head. Nyaa If you did it would merely become the new "noise" or simply join in!

Jogging/walking while listening to music helps a lot.  I also listen to music to unwind on the drive home.  A good game helps as well, though now my playtime is limited to after 9pm, usually.

Well it depends.

Are you thinking about stuff that concern you, then you can do things like meditation, doing whatever you like or punch people in the face.

If you are worried about other people than it get's a little trickier. You first need to find the people responsible and then punch them in the face. Unless it is things like money problems, then you have to rob a bank. Which involves punching various peole in the face.

Actually most problems can be solved by punching people in the face.

Seriously though, is there anyone here who doesn't have a wank to relax?

I have several rituals, the most basic being locked in my room and simply relaxing.

If I find myself in a noisy place, I've kind of adopted Henry Rollins' technique of putting on headphones, playing music louder than my environment, and keeping to myself.

Showers are nice. Sometimes I'll even lay in the shower with the lights off for ultimate relaxation.

I don't do it enough, but I find a lot of clam while snorkeling. I'll go to a beach, swim out pretty far, and just float around looking down on the world underwater.

Working out brings a form of calm. It relieves stress and tires you out, which makes relaxing feel all the more better.

Of course that is something I do, but what am I supposed to do when I can't find someone to wank?

I like the quiet. No noise. Just peaceful quiet. Close my eyes, and enjoy the quiet. Now that's relaxing. Reading goes well with this, which also relaxes me.
