I've beaten the first 2 Devil may Cry games.
The only Zelda games I've given an honest chance at are Ocarina (which I have played three times for multiple hours) and Phantom Hourglass. I liked Phantom Hourglass greatly until I was sent back into some temple for the third time, it was just boring. I stopped playing Ocarina for the same reason. In those two games they just don't give you any real sense of accomplishment, it's just a slow progression toward an undefined goal.
Plus, Link is just an uncompelling character. There isno investment in him. He's a mime.
I didn't think there's much backtracking in OoT, but it's been a while. Try Twilight Princess, you're mostly moving forward in that (which is quite a feat considering it's like 30 hours long) and it has a bit more of a story than usual. It just has a slow start but you may enjoy it as it may help you give more of a character to Link just by where he lives and how the other characters speak of/to him. It's still a fairy tale though, not some hollywood action flick.
aspro said:As a reminder thsi is apparently a "zelda-type" game, so since I hav enot enjoyed prior Zelda games I'm playing this to see if this genre can click for me with different IP.
I'll be playing it on PS3. How about the rest of you?
ps3 as well. add me so i can spy on your progress
... though vader opting out seriously ruined this for me

you did Twilight Princess in 30 hours? it took me easily three times that. but then again I never wanted it to end
I'll have to check my save but I think so. I didn't do side stuff except for fishing (can't wait for Motion + version).
Edit: yikes, 68 hours?! How huge is that game, and with barely any backtracking done? That's pretty damn epic...
I'm also playing it on PS3. Bugs, what's your PSN name? I'm elrobio over there.

you'd never guess!

Damn right you're in! At least give it 3 hours of play. If you don't like it go back to Sackboy (or Mass Effect that you really should be waiting for a massive price drop before you buy anyway).
Gamespot says, "An uproariously fun and enjoyable post-Apocalyptic adventure that is a little too familiar at times."
My thoughts and knowledge of this game, in preparation for it's playthough starting next week:
+ Initially brought to my attention when it was going to have a Dec 31 release date. This was later changed to January 7.
+ THQ wanted it to be a huge commercial hit. I don't know if it made it or not.
+Darksiders 2 is in development and will be out in 2012.
+ It has a metacritic of 83, so it must be a pretty good game.
+ Everyone (except Agnates) says it is like a Zelda game. Shoudl be interesting to see what that looks like outside of the Nintendo ecosystem.
Gamespot Review "The Bad" :
- Controls are overly complicated and sometimes unresponsive
- Absurd and meager story
- Noticeable screen-tearing and frame-rate issues.
I think you'll agree it's closer to Devil May Cry than Zelda due to the combat system (the way moves are done, the upgrading, etc) and the structure. There's not even any city area or other NPC heavy areas like Zelda tends to have, and even start with... It just doesn't only take place in a castle and the surrounding area or whatever DMC tends to have and instead has a few different environments. It's also without a main open world or anything as complex as the better Zelda temples in terms of puzzling and platforming, it's much more straightforward.
I'm sure you are correct, I'll find out soon. The people who compare it to Zelda must not have played one or the other I am guessing.

The dungeons are Zelda enough to make the comparison but I feel that is where it ends. I played the demo which was one dungeon, and it has the same kind of Zelda progression without the excellent puzzles.

So it is more like Okami!
It's not very Zelda-like really, more Devil May Cry-like. Or, if you haven't played any of those, like a God of War with a mostly continuous and a little more open world that you need to backtrack some in on occasion, rather than a fully linear progression. What's not to like about Zeldas though, they have solid fluid combat, quite a bit of good exploration and puzzle solving, with progression based on upgrades that allow access to areas you couldn't go before. Oh, and super cool (if too easy, after OoT) bosses. What of these elements don't you like and how much of each did you actually play (some have super slow starts be4 they get into the normal gameplay pace) to decide that? I guess some of their mechanics feel outdated, mainly the use of gadgets like the hook shot for one, but a lot of the core gameplay still feels modern. I'm not a super fan or anything,. I've only played a couple 2D games, OoT, and Twilight Princess, but yeah, it's just good solid fun. I didn't think any gamer could go wrong with playing one. Have you played Okami? That's more like Zelda, although it has its own feel in many ways too.
