No one wants to playt Little Big Planet 2. You should have gotten them a bag of glass shards instead. More fun.
My Christmas games (Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D and Mario Kart 7) haven't arrived even though amazon supposedly shipped them over 5 weeks ago. I'm a little bit upset. Think it will be another Christmas morning of Super Mario Galaxy and SMG2. It's a game I've associated with Christmas morning ever since the original came in november 2007

Go play Xenoblade instead.

You know reading through your experience of it, and your discussions with GG has actually put me off it a little bit. I'm really not cut out for heavy RPGing with stat watching and lots of working through menus and customizing things. Also there is nothing I hate more than wandering about pointlessly in a game trying to find where I need to go and what I need to do next. When I think RPGs I crave for more Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario games

GG hates any complexity of any kind yet he loves Xenoblade. Don't worry it is very intuitive and you will never be lost. Also it is much more forgiving that Demon Souls a game you claim to love. Also you will never get lost ever, there is an objective marker. With that said go play it now.
It's probably hard to compare it to Demon/Dark Souls. Even though they are (broadly speaking) action RPGs the emphasis is really very much on the action. You need to take time to learn the nuances of the action system and learn to play it properly. Then the game is very rewarding. Leveling doesn't hardly come into it. Grinding won't help you unless you learn to fight. And learning to fight makes the grinding all but unnessecary.
Having said that, it's only fair that I give Xenoblade a shot. Almost everyone who played it loved it so there is no doubting its quality
There is no need to grind in Xenoblade at all. You get experience not only for defeating enemies, but also exploring, doing sidequests and getting achievements.
Also make no mistake, Xenoblade in no action RPG, it is a RPG/MMORPG hybrid. It is a very different beast. But I was under the impression that stats played a heavy role in the Soul series. You actually create your type of character and also sometimes there are enemies you can't beat yet until you have leveled up.
I just downloaded Mighty Switch Force from the eShop. I know nothing about the game, but it was made by WayForward so that's enough for me to go ahead and buy it.
