I bought it on the Wii VC but I think it was recently made available at the eshop (alongside 1080 Snowboarding) so it can be purchased to play on WiiU. Great game. And of course the sequel is absolutely brilliant.

Yeah, I own the sequel and it is superb. One of the few games where I ever cared for time attack mode. I've been wanting to play the original for quite a while now. 1080° Snowboarding is a great game as well. I played that with my brother in law, who is a showboarder, a couple of years back and he was amazed at how well it simulated the real thing, even in spite of its age. Sadly the sequel, Avalanche, was an utter piece of crap.
The top down Wave Race gameboy game is pretty great too. Very little in common besides the name, but a good game.

I heard your impressions and so far agree with a lot of them. I have only noticed one major gameplay difference so far and I think that actually may hurt the game more than help it. Still I am going to give it a fair shot and see if it manages to really differentiate itself in any way shape or form.
