No.
I would love to have all games look as good as they can, I'm not saying better tech is bad.
I'm saying that in the case of many Nintendo franchises it is not going to make a hell of a lot of difference to the actual games. Design choices have a bigger effect for instance Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy are on hardware on a similar level and yet the desgin choices made them very different games.
Think about the following Nintendo franchises and how 360 level hardware would benefit them.
Case 1:
Mario Kart - basically the same game we've been playing across 4 generations now. You want better online, Wii could do better online, Nintendo just doesn't want to do it. You want to build tracks and share them online? You can do stuff like that already in games like Boom Blox Bash Party, Nintendo just doesn't want to do it. Having Mario Kart made on 360 level hardware would bring what benefit exactly? More detailed textures on the rocks and trees? Larger levels? I think firstly larger levels would dilute the hectic design of Mario Kart it's also more a case of streaming larger levels from a disc which has nothing to do with tech specs and more to do with storage space and the speed of the disc drive.
Case 2:
Animal Crossing - basically the same game we've been playing across 4 different consoles now, even set in the same damned town. Another game that is not reliant on the epic that 360 level hardware can bring. Hell, even the small bit of the 3DS game looks like it's classic, Groundhog day animal crossing.
Case 3:
Wii Sports - the Mii's are a stlistic choice and having better graphics wont do much for this franchise.
Case 4:
Mario Galaxy
- the whole game is set on planetoids with a space bacground, it already has shaders and an epic orchestral soundtrack there is very little that making the game on 360 level hardware would bring.
Case 5:
Zelda. Yeah I know, you would think that this game is the one that could benefit the most. Potentially, yes. Realistically, maybe not. All the 3D home console Zelda games have had the same design, you have an overworld you pootle about in and then you enter tightly designed temples. Ocarina, Majora, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess. Based on the past games, we would get a very similar design, with better visuals.
I would almost compare it to Batman Arkham Asylum, the game entire design could be done on Wii, it is a tight Nintendo like design set in small to medium sized environments, with great graphics. That is what I would expect HD Zeldas and Metroids to be like. The people expecting Zelda to turn into Oblivion just because Wii 2 might be more powerful, I just don't want them to hype themselves and be disappointed.
We've been through enough Nintendo console pre-launch hype sessions that we should really temper expectations here. Personally, if you look at what Nintendo has been doing as of late or in the past, they usually want to make the best hardware within a fiscal limit so they can sell consoles at a profit. Wii is a little unusual, in that for the same price it could have been more powerful but the design choice of a slim console made them have to miniturise the components which made the components much more expensive.
Even if they did have 360 level hardware in Wii 2, that hardware is 5 years old, it's classic Nintendo. Now its cheap enough, they will do it and then put some hardware defining feature on it like motion control, like touch screens, like a 3D screen. So whilst I am happy to have better graphics and more memory, I am more curious and expectant about what that platform defining feature will be.
I hope you are right about Nintendo being talented enough to not seem lagging on the graphics side. It's not like I want them to fail. I think maybe their first few games might be like Halo 3, where people were comparing it to Gears of War.
Less jaggies, more foliage, better lighting, bigger areas, less segmented areas, higher draw distances, increased environment complexity, volumetric effects, higher texture resolution, higher fps (Twilight Princess was 30 even on Wii), more complex physics, etc, can be benefits as well, regardless of the chosen art style, even before Nintendo get to grips with using pixel shaders effectively or incorporating normal mapping to their art and what not (which I don't think will take long). I think you're underestimating the potential even if it's 360 like. I do think others overstate it though. More power doesn't only imply gritty vaseline realism (thank God).
The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds
while the pessimist fears this is true.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I think different teams at Nintendo will have different results graphically. No doubt Retro Studios and the Zelda team will have the most impressive looking shit. I'd actually kind of like to see Retro try a Zelda game, unless they're going to make an original 1ST-person IP like I've wanted for years now.
The MGS4 thing was just a joke, but that wouldn't surprise me. I fully expect Resident Evil 5 to show up as well.
To kinda deviate from the conversation a bit...
Is it wrong that I'm kinda excited for that Sonic Generations game? That trailer didn't seem half bad!
Rage looks awesome. Better than Crysis 2.
Let's not forget Ultra 64.
Sega has been on a roll with Sonic for the past year. Sonic 4 was good and Colors was great. Someone over on Sonic Team may have finally gotten their heads out of their ass.... now if they'd only give NiGHTS another try.
Soudns like a true BETA and not a marketing ploy. Thanks for your impressions.
I really wish Nintendo would stop putting the A,B,X, & Y buttons ass backwards btw.
I got 2.5 hours into Bayonetta last night.
It's not working. I spend most of the time dieing. Actually I spend most of the time looking at the words LOADING... and SAVING...
10 seconds of game play followed by 20 seconds of LOADING... SAVING... is not for me, I learnt my lesson from Too Human.
So now I'm playing a game that I know will be shit, Golden Axe on the 360. No way can I get my hopes up for this one. I'm an hour in so far.
Hmm have to check out the beta Arch, I'm been kind of bummed I bought a Crysis 2 off of Ebay and never got it. So I'm trying to get a refund now and still not playing Crysis2 sucks.
I bought a faulty Dreamcast off Ebay one time that was supposed to be brand new. I was pissed beyond words.
I can't get into the beta.
What?! Why not?!
Don't know. It has a message about the beta coming soon and tells me to exit. The code worked fine.
I guess I'll be playing Fallout: New Vegas.
