It is general consensus that Dark Souls absolutely destroys Blade of Fate.
You also can't judge a game by how much "worse" characters have gotten as some characters that once sucked have the vice versa happen tothem.
One of the site's forefathers.
Play fighting games!
I complained about it in the old GG weekly. In the old days, even games like Super Metroid and Mario World never got 10s. Heck Mario 64, one of the most revolutionary game, did not get as much 10s as some of these newer games.
There is almost always the same pattern. The early reviews are always 10s and later the score drops. GG posted a article in the old GG weekly, explaining how GTA4 got all the 10s. Reviewers were basically forced to play the game at an hotel, and some were not able to finish the game. But the had to write a review, because the release date was approaching. And now you can see a huge difference between the GTA4 scores and the readers reception of the game. Most people do not agree it is a 10. The lesson here: fuck reviewers!
She does trip. EVEN WHEN YOU'RE WALKING. Though she's stupidly fast and can deal some good damage. Shame you only play as her twice in the story (though she shows up quite a bit).
So I've been playing TOO HUMAN. A few things....
This is probably the biggest example of missed potential of any next-gen game so far. In the same way Assassins Creed is an awesome idea but flawed, but it was still a fun game to mess around with. Too Human though, is just completely broken.
Like AC, its a brilliant idea for a franchise and all that, but it misses the mark about 20 times worse than AC did. The biggest problem is the stupid analog stick combat. Why in the hell Silicon Knights thought that was a good idea....wow. You basically just jam on the stick and hope your dude pulls some blows out of his ass, while you get raped by about 40 robots at a time that all seem to flock right to you even though you're with an entire squad of soldiers who are completely useless anyway. That's generally how Too Human's combat plays out.
You die. A lot.
Since you're constantly getting mauled by hordes of robots, you're constantly dying. When you die, you have to watch an overly long death sequence, each time, before you can be re-spawned back into the game, sometimes a good mile from where you left off.
You have horrible camera controls, thanks to the lack of a free camera, thanks to the analog combat. Many times in battle you cannot see what's coming at you, which, in a game like this, is a big issue. Even when you go to the hubworld to talk to people and buy upgrades...there's no combat in this area and STILL they don't let you use the stick to look around.
A shame too, because the environments are beautiful. Graphically this is definitely the best work Silicon Knights has ever done. I wouldn't say its the best looking 360 game but its a looker for sure. The dumb camera is so far out of the action sometimes though, that you can't appreciate the details.
Basically it seems like they nailed the setting, the vibe, and the story pretty well....but just totally butcheed the gameplay when really, many of the problems would have been solved with a normal control layout which could have easily been done.
Baffling.
Someone on GAF is reporting that the ESRB re-rated Marvel vs Capcom 2 - for the PS3 and 360.
If true.....FUCKING WIN, GOD, AWESOME AND EPIC.
I forgot, doesn't mario kart use it for DLC? I remember playing the Mario galaxy challenge download. The Mario Kart Channel is great, it's just too F-ing big to leave there on your dashboard. I know you can run it off the disc but it was much better being able to access it anytime from the wii memory.
Never. I quoted it so you would be tempted to click the link again
Well, enjoy things either way. That's how I get through Defenders of the Earth.
Yikes.
That you can't download in europe. Ugh.
This is the GTA IV review article Iga mentioned:
http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18761
I've been watching Defenders of the Earth, the Thundercats and King of Queens all weekend.
Good read. I'm probably making a thread on this at the GGD later today. Personally, I never cared too much about reviews themselves, and certainly don't care at all about numerical scores. I do understand, however, the way quality reviews have been decreasing in number because of tight deadlines, and of the effect of review scores in sales.
It's very interesting reading these inside bits of journalism that go on behind the scenes. I was suprised to hear about Tecmo paying for prostitutes in Japan for journalists.
Now that's how you do business.
That's how I'd run my business. Only I would take video and blackmail them
10/10 Dogz Petz party, or else!
IGN reviews LBP, 6 page review, really well done and touches on every single issue the game has. The only thing I dont think they had correct was some confusion about the creation mode tools, I think the one shot trigger does activate something once and thats it, he said that wasn't possible. Also he kind of didn't get into the playing of others levels which is where the magic happens. Still if you want a great read on what LBP is like, read it.
Leo World of Goo also got a 9.5, amazing score. Its $15 right, its going to have to wait, I am dying here, I shouldn't even be buying LBP. But its a definte buy later on.
MOTHER GODDAMN FUCKERS ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
"By withholding code until a late stage then (be it through design or ineptitude), a PR can force a journalist to rely on marketing hype and information to fill the gaps in their knowledge of the game when writing copy. In this way, control of the critical reaction is shifted back to the PR in a subtle and (arguably) legitimate way."
I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE ANGRY AT ANYTHING IN THE VIDEOGAME INDUSTRY AS I AM ABOUT THIS FINALLY BEING MADE PUBLIC.
I WAS RIDICULED AND BASICALLY TOLD I WAS NUTS BY SOME OF THE MOST ELITIST, OBNOXIOUS, POSER, GAMER-LOSERS ON GAMESPOT WHEN I SUGGESTED THIS EXACT STATEMENT ON THE RELEASE DAY OF GTA IV!
"AS A GAME REVIEWER I AM OFFENDED BY THE SUGGESTION WE ARE INFLUENCED BY MARKETING AND PR OF THE BIG GAME COMPANIES... BLAH, BLAH." --SOME IDIOT OF THE GGD.
WELCOME TO REALITY BOYS, SUCKS DON'T IT? WHO WERE THE LOSERS AGAIN THAT WERE ARGUING WITH ME IN RAGS TOPIC? I'D LOVE TO DIGITALLY SHOVE THIS ARTICLE UP THEIR PUCKERED LITTLE BUNG-HOLES!
THERE ARE THOSE OF US THAT LOVE GAMING FOR GAMING SAKE, AND OTHERS WHO ARE SO ROMANCED BY HYPE THEY LET IT BECOME THEIR PERSONAL PHILOSOPHIES. SUCKERED BY MEDIA, BLINDED BY HYPE, THEY WOULDN'T KNOW A GOOD GAME 'TIL THEY WERE TOLD IT WAS GOOD BY EGM.
I'VE PLAYED A LIFETIME OF GAMES. THEY WAIT TO SEE SALES NUMBERS AND PAID ADVERTISEMENTS TO SEE WHAT THEIR GOTY SHOULD BE. I HAVE NEVER FELT SO JUSTIFIED AND FURIOUS AT THE SAME TIME ! ! !
YOUR REALLY SHOULD... *ahem* ...try it out Vader, it's an extremely high-quality game for a two man team!
I expected some kind of reaction from you about Secret of Mana, though... Have you played it to death already, or have you not heard of it? With it's action-rpg elements (slightly akin to Zelda) I would have thought you'd be ALL over it!
I am also really excited about it, never played. The reason I am trying to stay quiet is cause I can't be getting all these games, so I am just going to try to focus on what I have at the moment.
BTW what are you referring too above? EDIT: I see it.
Leo's post and avatar are a match made in heaven.
Edit: I believe this is the first time I read Leo type "fuck".
i have never played 'secret of mana'. (or any other game in the series, even though i bought the DS mana game,) how excited should i be?

Phantom_Leo wrote: ...But there was A LOT of influence from RockStar. (Anyone care for a beer?)
Actually, that was sent several days after the game's release and after CVG already had their review up - which was 9.5, by the way.
Phantom_Leo wrote: Then... once IGN gave that 10... and it was up BEFORE everyone else's... They started a trend. "Oooo. They gave it a 10 and we weren't going to. Is there something wrong with us? What will the fans think? Have we had any scandalous happenings lately that we want to make up for by keeping the peace?" It almost seem like it was group think or going along with the consensus, rather than a true, unbiased review.
Do you have anything to offer as evidence or even a hint that was really the case...because I'm not buying it for a second. Lots of reviews end up similar to one another - usually it's a testament to the game's quality, or lack thereof - not massive conspiracy.
Phantom_Leo wrote: I personally don't feel this game deserves to be the "Highest Rated of All Time" due to the technical difficulties. Is it a AAA game? Yes. Best ever? No. Best GTA ever...? There seems to be opinions in this very topic that suggest, No... and the other versions didn't get 10's!
THIS WAS UP IN FLAMES (^)

"...but to assume that Rockstar paid off a bunch of sources, and to assume that one source had a "cascading effect" on other sites (including ours over at PSX Extreme), kinda says that we journalists don't have a mind of our own.
I've never been paid off or coerced by another source to significantly change a score. There's no reason to do that. I have no motivation to do it. I get paid to do my job and I do it to the best of my ability. What you're implying is just a little insulting to the integrity of journalists and critics..."

Add these two to a crapload of GTA IV-inspired GGD Forum new members ALSO ganging up on me 'cause I dared to say something unfavorable about the "Game of the Century" (for THAT week at least, then came MGS4, then came LBP, then came...) and you can see where I got a little disillusioned earlier this year!
If you go back now and ask all of those people what their GOTY is NOW, I wonder how they would respond?
I've never heard of PSX Extreme, but it sounds something like Fathoms would be involved with. I don't think any PR company is going to put pressure or give incentives or exclusive reviews to smaller sites, so perhaps he can't apply his experience to the experience of larger media outlets?
BTW The Thundercats blog is up!
