The video makes me want the original N64 Goldeneye on Switch.  I’m afraid I probably won’t like it if i played ITV now though.

IDK...if they did some work to it like they did with the Xbox version of Perfect Dark it would be fine. Clean the visuals, put it in widescreen, fix the frame rate, update the controls etc. I don't think we'll ever see Goldeneye remastered though. Unless it's a fan made PC project.

Hey guys, my grandfather passed away last night. It's been a rough two weeks of him in hospitals. He is finally at peace, it's been tough seeing him in pain these last few days. He was a great grandfather, he would buy me a bunch of games cause gen knew I loved them. He will be missed.

RIP. My grandma died a few years back, but she was in bad shape for years before that. Couldn't hear or see very well at all. I always feel like when someone gets to that point, where you really can't LIVE anymore, death is a release from it. It always sucks for us, the living, to lose someone. But sometimes it's for the best.

DF: hands on with Doom's Switch port (undocked) 30FPS, low texture res, questionable framerate

Probably should have mentioned: "direct capture from Switch wasn't possible during the recent hands-on events in the US and UK, because the game was only available in handheld form. However, Digital Foundry's tech wizard Richard Leadbetter has done the next best thing; he's built a PC which matches the spec of the Switch as closely as possible, and has grabbed footage from that to give us our closest indication yet - in video form - of how the Nintendo port will run. And while Leadbetter admits he has taken some guesses when it comes to configuring the PC, he seems pretty confident that the Switch version he played runs more smoothly than this captured video. He also notes that because he was playing in handheld mode, it could be the case that the docked version runs even better."

GAF has a better summary:

All of his impressions are based on playing in UNDOCKED mode

  • Most ambitious cross platform Switch port yet
  • "Utterly insane, how did they do that?"
  • Post process pipeline mostly intact
  • 30fps cap was "inevitable"
  • Depth of field reduced but not removed
  • Resolution is lower on Switch, dynamic, unsure of exact count
  • Reduced textures
  • "It's a good port!"

He's really looking forward to testing the final Switch version because he believes it will demolish a PC with equivalent specs

Final word:

"Bottom line, I've played a respectable looking version of DOOM on what is effectively a tablet. And that is seriously impressive."

Judged on its own terms, Doom on Switch could be a winner based on our gameplay tests so far - but our hands-on was entirely handheld-based. On the one hand, we expect more consistent performance and improved resolution when docked, but on the other, playing on the big screen may highlight the cutbacks more. We'll just have to see. However, the basic idea of bringing Doom - and indeed Wolfenstein 2 - to Switch is just so ambitious, we have to applaud the developers for the effort. Hopefully the final code will deliver.

I've been up for hours fucking around with a SNES emulator and it makes me wonder why I even bothered with a Retron 5. LOL

This shit is badass, and it works flawlessly. Checked out some ActRaiser and it was like 1991 all over again...man did that bring back memories. I remember playing that game all summer that year. Fell in love with it.

Then, I checked out Super Turrican, that Factor 5 game, for the first time. And holy jumpin' shit balls, this game looks and sounds fucking amazing for a SNES game. These guys were absolute masters for years at production values, there's no doubt about it. This looks like a GBA game, not a SNES game from 1993. And it has Dolby Surround....how many games back then had that? I don't remember any until the PS1 and N64 came out. It also seems really fun. Reminds me of Contra.

Also downloaded Chrono Trigger. Never played it...now I will. At some point.

That's all well and good, but how many people are playing on a PC with those specs? That's a pretty barebones PC. LOL

Yeah it's impressive if you think of the Switch as a handheld. But it's still obviously by far the worst version of the game.

So sorry to hear that D. Best wishes to you and your family. My grandparents lived abroad in different countries so I never really knew them well, if at all.

That PC they built is actually more powerful than Switch, they had to constrain it's performance. laugh

But obviously, if you are Switch only owner and if you value portability - having a lower graphical quality maybe something you are willing to accept. Many people bought Wii versions of games and the technological gap was far larger.

Last night, I fulfilled a dream of mine.  I saw Arcade Fire in Atlanta, a group I’ve been waiting to see live for nearly a decade.  They did not disappoint, greatest live show I’ve ever seen.

Doom looks pretty great in handheld mode

The following video is lower quality but you can see the framerate is actually really smooth and fast:
