Nintendo NX: Doesn't Want Rivals To Steal Its Ideas

Cmon...are these guys serious? How many times are they going to keep repeating the same bullshit? Yes everyone wants to steal your ideas that will lead them to 9 million units sold Nintendo. And you know, if you're truly the best at what you do, it shouldn't matter if anyone takes your idea....you should be able to top them.

So to elaborate on this, we assumed Nintendo was moving onto NX because of the lack of games at E3, but in the shareholder meeting they say:

Iwata: We want to correct the lack of satisfaction with E3 streams, but as a whole, reactions weren't all bad. As Miyamoto said regarding short-term E3 announcements, we decide this on a yearly basis. We talk about future titles when needed. There are years when products are more finished and we can communicate their appeal. That may explain the difference this year..

Q7: As a game fan, I'm worried about the split between the NX and Wii U.

Iwata: We can't talk about the NX. If we do, competitors may take our ideas and customers won't be surprised. This would not be beneficial for the company or its shareholders. The NX is new hardware, and will start from 0. However, the 3DS and Wii U have install bases. Immediately cutting off SW for previous HW upon the release of a new machine is inefficient. We will continue making 3DS/Wii U SW while preparing for the NX. We are prioritizing satisfying customers who purchased the Wii U.

Oh yes...I'm sure Nintendo has TONS of Wii U AAA games in development that nobody knows about. Similar to the Wii in its last 2 or 3 years on the market.

Metroid may not big a big seller but it is considered a " hardcore" game which is something a lot of gamers don't view Nintendo as having.

Even when Nintendo platforms do have Metroid games, those games don't sell particularly well. Look at the Wii install base compared to GC and Prime 3 still couldn't touch Prime 1 sales.

edgecrusher said:

I think if Nintendo had a Metroid Prime 1 level game as a launch title for Wii U, a "one of the best games ever made" title, it would have moved some units. Especially with some marketing.

Reviewers opinion of the Prime games have dwindled for its sequels, even when the games are great. Sadly as I think they are all awesome. If Prime 2 and 3 couldn't acheive the best game ever made moniker, I don't see how Retro could make that push for that title in a 4th game. Maybe they have ideas I don't? I like their ideas for Prime 2 and 3, but reviewers seemed to have cooled off after Prime 1.

I think Sakamoto is 1st in charge of the franchise and he decided to do Other M which must of shunted Retro off the project. And we all seem to have forgotten about Other M, well I did until I searched up the sales, it got lower sales than all the prime games and the worst critical reception despite being a very good game IMO. That must have factored into things, then Nintendo looked at Retro and saw the over 6 million sales for DKCR.

Anyhow forgetting about Metroid, the Animal Crossing team, instead of making the next title are doing those 2 spin offs - in an interview today they say they will get working on the next proper AC game after these two douchebag spin offs. *facepalm*

Other M was a good game, but it was not even close to the Prime games and it also kind of FELT like a title that didn't have as much effort put into it....kind of half assed for a franchise that legendary.

As for sales, think about the audience. When Prime 1 came out, Nintendo still had a good amount of the hearts and minds of more serious gamers, and not just Nintendo fanboys or delusional fanatics. By 2004, many people had said SEE YA to Nintendo in favor of Xbox, or PS2. And the Wii....I think we all know the Wii mostly sold to people who don't know shit about good games, nor do they care about Nintendo or the Wii U. Is it really surprising that Prime 1 sold the best and sales have declined?

Metroid is the most non-Nintendo franchise they have. Which is why its the perfect one to keep throwing out there in top quality form. Its a start if they truly want to broaden their audience. Or they can just keep doing what they've been doing since the Wii came out. Keep teasing everyone with Mario and a million side games, Zelda and a few side games, a original game or two, a shitload of virtual console releases of old franchises they don't make anymore.....and keep hoping some kind of gimmicky controller will get hit by lightning.

I don't want a Skyrim 2. I want a Morrowind remake with Skyrim engine and mod options, ENB stuff, the works. The same game, same quests, same art direction, only in the Skyrim engine.

That would be great, but then the same people whining about FF7 remake would whine about this.

I have been thinking the same.

My tennis elbow has improved considerably but I'm still not able to hold the 3DS in my hands (or the Upad).  I was largely a handheld gamer for the last several years and that seems to have been taken from me (at least for the time being).  And I haven't switched on the WiiU at all since coming back from Israel.  Not even to play Mario Kart.  Maybe once Yoshi arrives, maybe ... if I'm still in the country (I hope not to be though I haven't made any plans to travel anywhere yet).

It's kind of funny, it sounds like we're both coming to the end of the road (at least of one road) with gaming but from entirely opposite directions.  Sounds like you're going through the best period of your life and that you are much too happy and too busy with more important things to find time for gaming!  Which is wonderful!!  I, on the other hand, am going through one of my longest and deepest lows and most of the time I'm too depressed to eat or put a record to listen to, let alone to pick up a controller.

Did you have an opportunity to explore, or was it all depressing lectures?

But it's no system seller to most.  People who would consider Nintendo only for their 'hardcore' games wouldn't run out buying WiiU's based on a Metroid game alone.  It's a game that caters ony to a minority of their fans.  Their longterm fans who are now in their late 20's, early 30's.  And we're no longer their target demographic.  Just look at where they chose to advertise.

Agreed. For those whom have not already bought a Wii U a Metprime is not going to get them to buy one.

Lots of info on why the E3 showing was why it was and a promise to keep supplying Wii U with software here:

That is what you'd expect them to say. I am guessing the decision as to when to move to NX is a balance between what games they already have in the pipeline for Wii U and how locked in the develoment of the NX is. I would have to guess the NX is basically ready based on Nintendo's past history of never stopping hardware development (just choosing to skip some projects based on the success level of the current offering).

As much as I love it, the Wii U is a trainwreck sales-wise, and doubling down and investing in it for the few that have it now would be a poor business decision.

What would? Because catering to just a 9 million userbase is where they're at, and Metroid is just about the biggest franchise left that they haven't already released on the console. Zelda isn't going to move anymore units than Metroid. Especially after most Zelda fans probably dropped the money down for the Wind Waker HD.
