You have to be buddies with Miyamoto.
Only select Platinum members on Club Nintendo got the download code.
Leo has one of them and he was giving some away. If you didn't get the code you have to play the other which released on the 19th.

For the record I have spent a few minutes with the Smash Bros. demo (3DS is almost dead and needs to charge), and I must say it's quite good. Looks much better than I expected it too, particularly with the 3-D. Still have to get used to all the button positions though.
Oh and thank you again Leo. This will make for a very pleasant weekend experience.
