The Activision employee (who doesn’t represent the opinions/views of everyone at Activision) told me the following:

“Activision didn’t expect much from Wii U sales of Black Ops 2, but they sure didn’t expect it to be that abysmal.  Activision gave Wii U owners the best version of Blops 2 with Off TV features, and Nintendo fans didn’t support it.  It’s easy for Nintendo fans to trash publishers for not giving them ports, but publishers have wisened up.  They realize Nintendo fans are all talk.  Nintendo fans are vocal with their mouths, but when it’s time to open their wallets, they’ll spend that $60 on New Super Mario Bros instead.”

Buying the new Mario isn't a very good excuse. Makes it sound like they're beaten by a better game. Which they are. But let's be honest, it's more that for all their whinging for multiplats, they're just gonna buy that multiplat on a different console.

So what team at Ubisoft was working on AC4? Clearly not the AC3 team.

I thought all of Ubi made AC?

Regardless, it's kind of telling that they are abandoning all the assets of AC3 and jumping straight to 4.  They probably know that they've squeezed all the juice out of this franchise 2 games ago with BroHo.

It seems the 3DS is slowly but surely becoming the home of old school SNES/PSX type RPGs much like the DS was before it (but without all of the "imagine" bullshit and pet training games), which is nice both for the platform to start developing an identity as well as for gamers who can't seem to find those types of games on home consoles much anymore.  There's a lot of good word of mouth surrounding games like Devil Survivor and Etrian Odyssey etc.  Personally they may be a little too hardcore for me but I'm pleased both that they exist and also that there's enough of an audience for them.  Can't wait for Fire Emblem

I wish that it were.  But all those games you mentioned are post PSX.

I hedged my bets by gettign both the handhelds in hopes of corning the traditional JRPG market.  So far all I have is the promise of DQ7 on 3DS and enjoying PSX RPGs on Vita via PSN.

No, it doesn't at all read like that don't worry.

Maybe it's premature to call the 3DS that and at this stage it may be more wishful extrapolation of what the DS stood for when it came to RPGs but there are hints that it may be moving towards that niche (at least in Japan).

It is even more premature with the Vita but certainly steps like P4G are in the right direction

Have you guys read the Crytek bloke's interview?

He is all about how games should be persistently multiplayer from the get go and they should be played in a social environment network like facebook or twitter and stuff like that.  If that is a vision of the future, then it really does seem like my days as a gamer are numbered.

I ignore everything from Crytek these days. They are  so overrated.

If single player games ever stop being made, then stick a fork in me for I am done. Thankfully, I seriously doubt that'll ever happen.

Good infos GG. Closer to DICE I had heard that a "major" publisher was not so quietly expressing their disappointment at the sales of a title on the U that they expected to sell in the millions and fell far short. Given Ubisoft's delay of Rayman, I thought that publisher may have been Ubisoft but looks like it was Activision based on your excerpt.

A couple of weeks back a Sidhe analyst was saying the same thing about GDC. Seems kinda early to bail he said, when ps3 was in the same situation everyone had faith it would come  good and kept supporting it. His words. Now it's Nintendo it's bail time. Also from what Criterion and other devs have said, some devs took an early look at the hardware when the toolset was early and bad and didn't bother digging into the hardware like criterion did. They just walked away. Yet devs persevered with the exotic and hard to use ps3 architecture.

EDIT: So it turns out that blog was probably faked, but the sentiment was true because we heard from sidhe a few weeks back.

Bugsie is actually right. Shin Megami started as a series waaay back on the MSX and Famicom Computers and had a lot of games on both Famicom and Super Famicom. The series even had spin-offs on the Game Boy color, before hitting PSOne and the DS.

Same goes with Fire Emblem. It pre-dates anything Playstation by 4 years.

Etrian and Unchained Blades are based on Wizardry which started somehow before computers were even invented...

_________________

Regardless of origin points of ANY of these series, 3DS has A LOT to look forward to, and hopefully Vita does too...

I am completely satisfied with Etrian Odyssey IV and FE: Awakening is (one of) the best game(s) of its type EVER.

Beyond that, we have Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers to look forward to, as well as Devil Survivor 2: Break Code. Somehow I still hope for the release of Bravely Default Flying Fairy as I actually enjoyed The Four Heroes of Light immensely. Mario and Luigi: Dream Team is coming and Beyond the Labyrinth is STILL an unknown variable at this point.

_________________

We've also already had Tales of the Abyss and a Kingdom Hearts game too, so saying it's a great RPG system isn't too far of a stretch.

Although I already have more than enough to keep me busy for a while, I would pick up Persona 4 on the Vita immediately should I ever find enough reason to get a Vita in the first place.

Ah, the age of the PSOne Role-Playing Game: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was an age that immediately followed the brilliant Golden Age of the late-generation Super NES RPG, it was the dawn of the CD and the near limitless data storage it delivered. They were grandoise as much as they were tedious. They were the supposed death-knell of the sprite, but they were also the introduction of "Hey let's make this world entirely of polygons BECAUSE WE CAN!" You had the invention of the full-motion-video cut scene (FFVII) and the intrusion of the full-motion-video cut scene special attack (Knights of the Round). You had some of the most inventive RPG creations of all time (Vagrant Story), you had some of the most soul-less RPGs of all times (Beyond the Beyond, Gran Stream Saga). You were finally delivered into fully-realized, 3D worlds, only to discover the pain of trying to use a digital controller to navigate full-realized, 3D worlds. They brought the RPG to the mainstream audience which lead to their booming popularity and eventual demise. I love you, I hate you PSOne Role-Playing Games!
