Hi, everyone! Had no phone, cable or Internet yesterday, yes, courtesy of the Hurricane, still! Played a bunch of Need for Speed and Darksiders Wii U!

How do you like darksiders?

I set my expectations very, very high for the Wii U version and was disappointed at first that it was (apparently) just a port. The more I play it though, the more I see a lot of little improvements here and there. Better textures in certain areas, much, much deeper colors and no performance issues whatsoever, so far at least. The loading times are worse, and I haven't tried any of the Pad improvements at all, but so far, I am pleasantly surprised. I am slowly getting used to the Pro Controller too!

Excite Bots was excellent. The Poker racing mode on that was a blast. Unfortunately only like 12 people ever owned the game so finding anyone to race against was hard enough, but I don't think I ever found more than one competitor at a time to race against in Poker mode. Pity. It was a great idea.

It didn't help that it was announced like 3 weeks before it was released.

It was worth all the system wars just to get to that point. We tried hard man, finally it paid off.

All I can say is, this is not nostalgia speaking for me, I beat nine XB games in 2011 hooked up to my HD TV. Visually, they were comparable to some Wii games, better than some Wii games and worse than others.

I don't know why anyone would care, that's just how I saw it.  If anyone else beat more XB games more recently, let us talk some more.

GG what is your id? i am on wii now

Gamingeek. I played pikmin adventure and a little zelda in bed. Decent for what it is, still love off tv play. Battery life is fine for someone like me who never plays more than 3 hours a day. Speakers are good but 3ds speakers are better with a more rounded sound and better surround but probably a lower volume. Some programs are slow to load but not hair tearingly bad. Only problem i have is that the u pad screen could be better. How is miiverse going to work? If 5 million people buy mario you could have that many people posting in one large thread with no organisation?

Same here. this sucks, i can follow him but that is it. so we cant message him directly

that's weird. And cuts out like 90% of people i would friend. im going to add chibear now, see what happens.

IT WORKS. I just added Bear, it's because I haven't added anyone yet. Going to register those  i can find now

Wow, this net browser, youtube video on the tv, yet browsing on the u pad. So useful.

I saw swearing on miiverse, shits and "fucken". Niiiiice

Oh i added nintyfan gemini and bear. couldn't find anyone elses id. I friend requested Vader on miiverse.

EDIT:

Don't know how Miiverse is going to be managable to read given no pages i.e 1,2,3,4 and that it's going to have thousands of invidividuals per game. But it is cool to read everyones impressions and funny pics and anecdotes. Now that I have registered a couple of friends and can track their posts its a lot more fun. I was scrolling down Vaders messages and it had his mii there. I messaged Bear. In some ways I'm finding Wii U's Net Browser and Miiverse to be easier and more user friendly than the regular internet. Before I got the system I was unsure of what Wii U was or what it would bring to the gaming stable. I'm still unsure but in a good way, there are so many possiblities with the system itself.

Regardless of games, I've only played a couple of hours of NintendoLand, the system itself, the two screen dynamic, the off tv play, touch screen, gyros and the clever way the software has been made - the actual functionality of the system itself brings so much value to the table. These are the only downsisdes I have notices so far:

  • Screen not so hot - but you are getting full fat HD home console graphics on it so it mitigates that somewhat
  • Some software takes slightly too long to load
  • You can't duck in and out of the home menu without reloading programs
  • Wireless signal is harder to pick up in small rooms with thick walls

The biggest problem, even with something like NintendoLand is what the programmers decide to do with U's features. It will vary on a per game basis and some people are going to make great decisions, others are going to make f-ed up decisions. Putting the camera pitch on the gyros in Nintendoland for instance? Play with the pad flat on your lap and stare at the floor, play in bed and stare at the ceiling. Not allowing me to invert the sticks in the metroid game? Stupid.

Nintendoland, I am at a disadvantage as a solo player, its quirky and interesting but not very good at the moment. At least it shows off some possibilities. It's like Wii Play with a lot more depth. Balloon trip is nice and shows what a touch screen can do for HD gaming but it gets repetitive. But imagine a Soul Bubbles or Lost Winds on this thing?

I love the way Miiverse people are now populating my plaza, it feels like a living breathing community. Now I'm imagining an Animal Crossing Miiverse.

Rare said:

A job ad for a principle network services engineer, spotted by OXM, says “Rare is continuing to push the boundaries of the Kinect hardware with our exciting new project”.

Then, there's loads of talk about the cloud and “ambitious” Cloud Services “in our future titles”. These cloud services will support gameplay, data sharing and title instrumentation. The person hired will “contribute to the long-term cloud services strategy at Rare to ensure we will be able to provide players with the services they expect from future titles”.

Now, onto another job ad at Rare, this time for a gameplay engineer.

“There's always a place here for the very best talent to help shape the future,” reads the pitch. “If you'd like to be part of a pioneering team dedicated to the next jaw-dropping, never-been-done-before Rare project, why not come and join us?”

Never-been-done-before Rare project suggests whatever game this is on about is not a new Kinect Sports.

Then, a hint that it will be for the next Xbox: “During prototyping you will occasionally be working with extremely early prototype hardware co-developed with teams located off-site. You will need to showcase possibilities to inspire our designers, quickly iterating even when the underlying platform may be unstable or rapidly changing.”

Back in May a job spec called for a Rare product manager to help create "multiple AAA future console releases". The listing said the candidate would ideally have experience in the action/adventure or FPS genres.

"Whilst continual development of their core releases will be maintained, the successful candidate will be joining at a time where the studio is looking to move into new areas and develop new IPs for future platforms," it read. "You will have a successful history of releasing exceptional AAA games and these will ideally be in the Action/Adventure or FPS genre but this is not essential."

Rare has in recent years focused on Kinect Sports, but over the years has released a number of Xbox games for owner Microsoft, including Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Viva Pinata and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.Don't know yet.

So they are doing a next gen kinect game with cloud storage? So I guess it's one of these user created content games where everyone falls in love with it then doesn't buy it in droves, or ends up not caring about in the end. An action adventure too though, that sounds good.
