I did take some advice from rragnaar at Gamespot (the crazy fucker has beaten this game 20 times or so, including multiple NG+++ playthroughs) in regards to that fucking dragon on the high bridge. Phalanx  went down without too much of a hassle because I had been hoarding over 25 firebombs and I just spammed the shit outta him. Besides, having chosen a Royal made things even easier since the small blobs are easy prey for the soul arrow.

Be friends with the guide, make love to the guide, you will need it cause half the stuff in the game is unexplained.
