The optimist proclaims we live in the best of all possible worlds
while the pessimist fears this is true.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You're really over simplying your examples. FPS's have gotten more accurate aiming, better physics, highly involved co-op modes. RPGs have new and different ways of leveling up statistics characters, different gameplay view points, different battle modes.
What's the big change we've seen in brawlers? I honestly can't think of a single one.
I didn't say bralwers have done anything radically new (but they also moved to the third dimension with games like No More Heroes and Dead Rising, with different viewpoint, but then that implies 3D is more evolved than 2D and therefor all games should be 3D which is just bullshit, lol) so I don't see why you ask me to name that. They're brawlers, ie kicking the shit out of stuff. That this type of game happened to be something that could be done to its best with less processing power so it had less room for evolution with new graphical technologies doesn't mean it's worse off. You pretended they died because they didn't do anything new, and it's clear you only say that because you have a bias, ie you don't find them enjoyable, because you ignore plenty of games that do nothing new sell like hot cakes, proving innovation isn't necessarily what the market values and what dictates what lives and what dies.
Trends change all the time, that is all, from fashion to video games. Who knew rail shooters would make a comeback? For all you know brawlers or space shooters or whatever has died out recently will be more popular in 5-10 years if people start tiring of what's currently hot. JRPG games still do "different" battle systems and 3D graphics and viewpoints and whatever else Western RPG games do but they're less popular than they used to be, that doesn't mean they're less evolved, it just so happens people are mostly into Western stuff now, possibly due to console gamers mostly not experiencing the PC classics that new Western games take from to know they're just as old as anything. There are plenty reasons to examine for trend shifts than "I don't enjoy it so it's objectively obsolette", especially when the industry thrives on young people who can't possibly have experienced everything that's been done from the beginning to now in order to objectively say "it's an old genre, that's why".
i don't know how one is able to use such absolute terms like obsolete. maybe less popular but why obsolete? i for one think i would enjoy a good new 2d brawler (and i have certainly enjoyed new 3D brawlers like yakuza, godhand, the warriors etc). i'm sure there are more people.
if anything, hardcore, would be a better term to use
That's because they stopped making them
3D essentially killed them off. I'm sure you can think of a ton of great ideas to implent, like when they introduced vehicles and guns into these games.
Whoa, you guys are going way too in depth about such an issue. Don't start fighting.
I'm watching you
Yeah the worst news I've heard is that even the gestural stuff to pause and fast forward movies, you have to stand to do it. The voice recog works regardless though.
I think they'll fix that for the movie function because that would be a major screwup. Funny if they can't though.
And I'm with robio on brawlers. Not to say that someone can't make a new innovative one, but nobody is.
Hopefully they'll be able to fix this sitting down issue with Kinect because the gestual and voice commands sound great.
Wow. That was really quick on Sega shooting down the new console rumour. Perhaps a little too quick. Hmm.
Kinect's software is designed around mapping the human skeletal structure, so when you are sitting it can't define your body shape properly. If you're like me and usually cover yourself in pillows, tv guides, chips and blankets then I guess it wont be able to tell what I'm doing.
My Kinectiger wont respond when I try to stroke it then.
I don't feel comfortable unless a pillow is covering my crotch.
Seriously, I have a cat with claws and my bro used to think it was funny throwing heavy things at me at the most random moments.
Now I literally feel more secure with a pillow at hand. To beat him with as well.
If SEGA revived some of its best franchises and did them justice I can imagine some people going for a reasonably priced Sega console. I know that if there was a console that had Shenmue, Jet Set Radio and more, I might get it.
SEGA hasn't cherished and nutured its franchises enough. Sonic lives on through sheer iconic popularity. If Sega could do what Nintendo has done, been consistent over a period of many years, they would be in a rosy position.
Bastard.
Anyway if there's more conventional games that can be played sitting down then having a pillow on your, errm, crotch shouldn't be a problem since sitting down your most likely will just be using arm/hand gestures and perhaps foot gestures. Playing games on the Wii that have those types of movements also require your hands and arms to be relatively free.
