Just watched the Alan Wake gametrailers review.

6 episodes long, each lasting 1 hr.

Combat kills a purchase. Looks like too much effort and too much like RE4 for me.

If it was combat free I would just soak up the locations and enjoy the horror and story more. I don't want to be dodging and weaving in and out of situations with multiple enemies and blasting them with shotguns.

....I thought you LIKED the combat of RE4?

I did, until every game under the sun started borrowing it's mechanics and then RE5 came along. For a narrative horror based game, I want something more imaginative then pulling out a shotgun and weaving about.

New details on Gears of War 3 sound fantastic. Dynamic arenas? Sweet! This game is going to rock so hard.

Watching the first ten minutes of Alan Wake, damn, the voice acting is so cheesy.

"What's the matter writer?"

"You think you're God? You're in this story now!"

"You missed your deadline!"

WTF? I would think it was comedy if it weren't the serious tone in the voice acting.

What the? A giant godly light rebuilds some staircases just by shining on it?

"Turn your flashlight towards him and burn the darkness away"

"In the nightmare a terrible darkness was taking over the world. The lighthouse was the only safe place on earth"

Seriously this is bad writing.

I am saddened there's so much talk about Alan bloody Wake (even if not altogether positive) and hardly a mention of Sin and Punishment 2 (thanks for sharing that review gg).

Iga, please come deliver some justice

Videoman

Someone is finally (slooowly) uploading a full playthrough of the PS3 version of No More Heroes to YouTube and HOLY HELL are the load times AWFUL!

It takes 38 seconds just to leave your hotel room after the Rank 10 fight.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZWnBZrae-g#t=1m36s

The same part on the Wii version takes 10 seconds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lLZKeHhyqs

I went looking for some 360 footage to see if it takes as long to load. Check this out.

In the Wii version it takes 3 seconds to load the cutscene after you defeat Letz Shake.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXm_klxriFM#t=3m17s

The same part in the 360 version? 1 minute 4 seconds.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTfErItGuBE#t=56s

Something is very, very wrong here.

And now for the other Alan Wake reviews.

IGN

It's not the revolutionary product some may have hoped for, but it's still great entertainment. Remedy has built a world that, despite being a fantastical realm of twisting shadows and realities, is solidly anchored in authenticity. Outstanding environmental design and some brilliant visuals and sound make Bright Falls and its mountainous surroundings look and feel alive. Though the camera can cause issues and the supernatural story isn't as interesting as some of the questions it raises, it's a tough game to put down once you've started. Remedy's done a great job of mixing elements of written work, television, and videogames to create an experience full of scares, laughs, and thrills that's just as fun to play as it is to watch.

9.0

But the lack of depth in combat doesn't ultimately damper Wake's core attractions; thrills, narrative and heart-pounding set pieces.

While its not the generation-defining game the epic development schedule might've suggested, Alan Wake is still a fantastic, 10-hour-plus play-it-on-the-couch linear action game - with brains required or not, depending on your preference.

Despite its flaws we had a fantastic time playing through Remedy's gripping, nerve-wracking story. And with a host of planned post-release DLC set to follow up the game's cliff hanger ending, that six-year construction still might warrant a place on the Xbox 360 hall of fame

destructoid

Alan Wake has some very definite faults, but this is still a superb experience that manages to outweigh all of its problems with some truly unique and special moments, tons of character and a story that manages to be convincingly inventive despite its tendency to veer into somewhat silly territory. Anything it could do to irritate the player is quickly made up for with a consistently striking character, intriguing cutscene, or thrilling stand-off against an encroaching force of possessed and gibbering mountain hicks. Alan Wake wears its own anomalous sense of style with pride and that alone earns enough credit to spend on inefficient dodging or unfair ambush attacks.

In short, it's a must-have Xbox 360 title that provides a freshness and dynamism that horror games have been achingly lacking for the past several years. And it's done all of this without an awkward, unwarranted, ill-fitting sex scene!

What if I don't have access to the DLC? Hrm

BTW, my bro finally gave me his 360 hard drive. Now I have to sell all his crapola on ebay, might keep the wireless dongle but I get terrible reception that keeps cutting out upstairs so it's useless anyway Hrm

6 hours long eh? I bet that totally won't be a problem for the HD bros, but Shattered Memories was totally not worthy of purchase due to the short length. Shame, it seemed pretty massive with that gigantic location.

Oh well, as long as it's good.

I don't think so. The first video had the uploader complaining about how the load times were godawful.

It's psychology-changing gimmick meant that it was worth at least a second playthrough though. I'm mid-way through my 3rd playthrough now. The changes aren't huge, but they are worth seeing and do add a margin of replayability to the game. I hear there are something like 6 different endings?

It kind of reminds me of Eternal Darkness, which wasn't the longest game, but it was just the right length to play again and again.

Don't tell me, I game in HD (also) but I'm not a HD bro Nyaa

Though replaying such games isn't for me, I act how it makes me feel, if I want to try "different" paths it feels like forcing myself to do actions I don't want to, so I only experience them once in general. If I actually care about the story that is, I may check out alternate stuff in games that make it simple to go back and see different versions without replaying the whole thing, but of course that hardly adds to the game time as well. I only played through Mass Effect 1 & 2 once as well. I didn't actually care for the story there but all the decisions were still done how I wanted and doing something else, ie, choosing red every time instead of blue basically, it would just feel forced. Not to mention the core of the story remained the same anyway so it just felt like a chore doing all the same things with a twist here and there outside a couple of more "important" cases.

Oh nice, watching the 1up video review of Alan Wake now. 3 of the editors are discussing it's cheesy writing.

"I had to figure a way out of this. Any second now Stucky would be knocking through the door with his axe like Nicholson in the Shining"

O...M....G that is bad writing.

Interesting, the guy says it's more like Max Payne, shooting and using light.

Daytime shadows looks janky looking apparently.

WTF? One of the 1up guys says the people 'look like absolute crap?'

'The lip synching never, ever matches up' oh crap, the clip that shortly follows shows that.

Looks like only the main reviewer liked it a lot.

Anyhow the reason I'm so interested in Alan Wake is because of a few years it was my most anticipated 360 game and I felt like a donkey with the carrot that was Alan Wake - being dangled in front of me.

I'm unfamiliar with the term. What's an HD bro?

With most games I feel the same. I can't be bothered replaying some games for the different endings and all that. Shattered Memories is generally so hassle free and smooth to play - no health bars, inventory screens etc that it's genuinely easy and pleasurable to replay.

But for the people who had a problem with the chase sequences, I guess it would be unpalatable.

NOM

Official Nintendo Magazine will make a "world exclusive" Nintendo reveal in its 57th issue, released June 16.

The mag says: "Speaking of the future, you may want to mark Wednesday 16 June in your diary. We'll be revealing world exclusive details on a top secret new game in the next issue of ONM. We had to make sure we cover this new game which is why ONM 56 and 57 are both being released on a Wednesday rather than a Friday as usual."

For the record, June 16 is slap bang in the middle of E3 - so you know it's going to be good.

Gears of War 3 to have lower framerate?

Gears of War 3 is set to sacrifice framerate for 'better visuals', Cliff Bleszinski supposedly told the Russian magazine doing the rounds this morning.

According to rough translations by the chaps on the official Epic Games forums, the Gears of War designer told the mag he's opted for prettier graphics and dynamic environments for the third game rather than a 60fps framerate.

Multi-layered shadows, wind and particle effects were the reported reason given for the lower frame rate. Cliff supposedly said: "Instead of chasing after 60 fps we decided to make it look better, we think that's a good choice. Also the levels change in real time."

Apparently Mr. Gears of War also revealed that the third game will be edging for a slightly lower difficulty this time around, in attempt to counter the fact that 60% of Gears 2 players didn't finish the game.

Controversial stuff. We'll drop Epic a line to get this confirmed.

I was among that group. I made it 20 minutes in.

I saw this and I called up my good buddy Miyamoto to get the scoop on it.  He told me, "FUCK YOU!  YOU STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM ME YOU BASTARD! I SEE YOU AGAIN AND I CUT YOU! I CUT YOU GOOD!!!"

He's still a little upset after I critizied his chocolate souffle. It just wasn't very good, and I thought he'd appreciate my honesty.  Nope. That's one meaner fucker when it comes to his dessert making.  So I'm afraid I won't have any insight here.

I don't mind a slightly lower framerate for better visuals myself. This is Gears of War and Epic we're talking about here so I seriously doubt that'll the framerate's going to really be bothersome and all that. I'm sure it'll be just fine. While there were some frustrating parts in the Gears games, on Insanity difficulty mind you, I didn't find them to be too difficult in general. I finished both games on Insanity solo. However if they want to lower the difficulty in the 3rd game I certainly don't have a problem with that either.
