RUMOR - more details on the incoming Nintendo game announcement

Remember back when IGN said that they knew of a new game from Nintendo that was pretty unexpected, and wasn't a B-level game? Things have been pretty quiet since then, but we do have a few rumors we can share with you.

- not related to the Charles Martinet Twitter comments
- revealed last Friday to some outlets
- from established I.P.
- not related to Pikachu's Great Adventure
- IGN says that 'no one will ever guess it'
- another rumored editor quote - "less cool in concept (thank Pikachu's Great Adventure), but most likely a better game when it’s all said and done. There is one interesting aspect to the title that hasn’t been fully revealed yet. The ultimate quality of this title may hinge on how well this aspect is executed. I don’t think anyone will be able to guess what this game is. I never would have expected this title to be in the works. I was actually excited about it when I first heard what it was, but after more details made it my way, it no longer seemed nearly as appealing. It’s still a cool idea, just not one that anyone asked for or expected."

DSi again took the top spot on the Japanese hardware sales chart during the week ended October 18, as PSP slipped further behind its rival.

Weekly DSi sales fell 999 units to 49,145, according to data from Media Create. In comparison, PSP sales dropped 6,500 units, leaving Sony’s platform around 15,500 units behind Nintendo’s. The gap between the pair was just 2,000 units two weeks previously following the introduction of a 15 per cent PSP price cut, although some consumers are no doubt saving their cash for the Japanese release of PSPgo on November 1.

Elsewhere, sales of PS3 and Wii remained pretty much neck and neck, with Sony’s console winning out by just 300 units. During September PS3 outsold Wii in Japan for the first time on a monthly basis.

Total hardware sales declined from 162,794 units the previous week to 151,210. DS Lite sales fell by almost 3,000 units, Xbox 360 sales were up 330, while PS2 sales were flat.

DSi - 49,145
PSP - 33,508
PS3 - 30,231
Wii - 29,965
360 - 3,662
DS Lite - 2,590
PS2 - 2,109

Analysis: Wii Software Sales Slow Down In 2009

[In this NPD analysis, part of our monthly extended look at U.S. console retail sales, Gamasutra examines software sales to date for all three major consoles, and finds Wii software sales have slowed in 2009.]

According to exclusive data provided to Gamasutra by the NPD Group, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has improved its tie ratio to 8.8 titles per system as of September 2009, up from 8.6 titles per system three months ago. The Nintendo Wii's tie ratio also increased in that period, from 6.4 to 6.5 titles per system.

Only the PlayStation 3 held its tie ratio essentially constant in the last quarter. According to NPD Group data 6.8 titles have been sold for each system. The tie ratio for the PS3 may remain constant, or even decline, as its hardware sales pick up and a commensurate jump in software sales lags a month or more behind.

Note that these figures are for software sold at retail only. Software sold on each system's online storefront are not included in NPD Group retail figures, although the firm does separately track such sales. Those figures are not publicly available.

Utilizing these new tie ratio data and the installed base of each system, we can determine the total software sales for each system. When we last checked these figures at mid-year, the Wii was within two million software units of overtaking the Xbox 360.

In the intervening period Wii software sales appear to have slowed somewhat, and the Xbox 360 still has a lead of about 3 million software units over Nintendo's Wii. In 47 months on the market around 143 million units of Xbox 360 software have been sold through U.S. retailers.

ltd-sw-sales-sep-09.png

In just 35 months the Nintendo Wii has sold nearly as much software. To put this in perspective, the Wii has sold nearly 50 million more units of software than the Xbox 360 had at the comparable point in its lifetime.

The PlayStation 3 has been selling software at a slightly higher rate than the Wii, but on a much smaller installed base. With only 59 million units of software sold to date, the PlayStation 3 not only lags the Wii (which launched simultaneously) but also the Xbox 360 at the same point in its lifetime.

The year-to-date software totals for these consoles provides a very interesting perspective on the state of the software market.

ytd-sw-sales-sep-09.png

As the graph above shows, both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have seen about 20% growth in software unit sales over the first three quarters of 2008. During the same period, however, Wii software sales have been flat. Even though Wii software sales are still higher than either of the other platforms, there is clearly something amiss.

One possibility is that Wii software sales were extraordinarily high during the first three quarters of 2008. Certainly Nintendo's first-party software dominated during that period with titles like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, and Wii Fit launching while Wii Play continued to appear in the all-format top 10 software chart month after month.

However, a closer look at the underlying figures suggests that Wii software sales really have slowed down throughout 2009, precisely in the period during which Wii hardware sales have also shown declines. It is also notable that Nintendo has not had a truly big first-party software release on the Wii this year.

Even with the price cut stimulating hardware sales and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, due out in November, it will probably be quite difficult for Nintendo to demonstrate growth of software for the year. According to our figures, over 36 million units of Wii software were sold in just the fourth quarter of 2008.

(Note: While tie ratio and attach rate are commonly used interchangeably by some, they are indeed quite different. As indicated above, a tie ratio is a measurement of the number of titles sold on average to system owners. By contrast, an attach rate is the percentage of a system's installed base which own a particular title or accessory.)

GG - what game do you think Ninty is going to announce? Kid Icarus (Reggie's comment last month)?

That's cool. The url needs to be more prominent though. Shame you cant put sigs on GAF.

Eh, cool but not great, interesting concept. Uses existing franchise/character. Could be anything but I doubt it will be anything people anticipate greatly. Maybe a Warioland type game or Sin and Punishment type jobbie. A niche nerd game I guess.

I have no real idea, but if it was important they would have shown it at E3 and so far no one in the press who has seen it has exploded with excitement.

Note the EDIT above. Yeah, maybe the url could replace the user name and the user name go somewhere else.

Yeah, well the gaming community being what it is these days, no doubt there will be initial dissapointment (followed by rampant interest).

The rumour surrounds a concept so maybe it will use motionplus.

Yesterday Miyamoto and I went out to a pumpkin patch to pick out out pumpkins for Halloween.  He's got a great design for his jack'o lantern.  It's Olimar with a bunch of Pikmin around him, and he has a special rotating light for the inside of it so that the shadows it casts dance around the room.  It's pretty neat.  He also sprays it with a candy corn aroma spray.  It's all very festive.

So as we were roasting the pumpkin seeds the topic of this game came up.  And he told me that I could come right out with it.  It's the new Star Tropics game.  They're bringing it back.  He wouldn't come right out and say it, but I think it's going to be a retooling of the original.  You see, Nintendo wants to release more Zelda kind of games, but they don't want to whore out the Zelda name.  So they looked into the catalog and the game seemed like an obvious choice.

He showed me a couple screenshots and it does look good.  He had more to show me, but he and I got into a disagreement when I wouldn't let him use my good carving knife, and he thought it'd be funny to hold a grudge.  He can be a little douchey like that from time to time.  Oh well, more will be revealed soon.

The goal is clickthrough.  Telling people thevgpress.com doesn't really do much.  There are two thoughts that work for generating interest -- "What is that?" and "I want that."  Honestly I would have liked the URL a little clearer, but this was the best balance I could find.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobile

I think the "rank" thing is a nice addition but I'm so used to most everything with a rank attached to it the numbers go up so seeing this seems a bit strange.
