Yeah, you are right Leo, question does not compute.

At least now I have come off my 'collector' frame of thinking where I thought it was required to buy anything that was:

- a franchise (must own all .hack games becasue there are four)

- anything commercially popular (must own every game that anyone who rocks up to my house wants to play).

- anything critically popular (must own anything the critics say is worthy)

- quirky/jp games

- low production runs

- norm-licensed (garfield, barbie etc...)

Now I just buy games I know I will play to completion.

^^^ This.  At least in theory.  But I've made a lot of progress, especially since becoming a Nintendo (and backlog) only gamer.    In practice I still give in to some of my old ways which are the same ones Aspro mentions except for the last point.   Licences put me off.  Replace that with reduced prices/sales.  ... "Oooh it's so cheap it's like I'm getting the pain and someone giving me 40 euros on top of that compared to what I'd have had to pay at launch how can I say no?"

Collecting them is one of the appeals of buying games to me, so it's not a very interesting answer...

Simply because they're just genuinely brilliant games, I love them, or they can be played endlessly: Metroid Prime, Ico by a mile, followed by PES5, Bayonetta 2 and Gran Turismo 3.

Generally speaking, I need something that's great for local multiplayer; one with co-op, and one without (unless it fulfils both those roles).

But other than that there isn't really anything that's always necessary...just depends on what I feel like at the time.

There are certain legendary games that need to be in a collection...and also I think its important to have your favorite sleeper hit classics in your collection to let people know that, yeah, you should have played this because its badass.

My Top 10 would probably be:

Hmm. I generally like having most any game in my collection so I'm not really sure that I can effectively answer this.

Well it was my first online shooter, so I found it to be amazing. Eye of the beholder.

I got the idea for this topic from an old EBGames manager I used to know. As long as he had "a" shooter, or "a" racing game he was satisfied. He claimed he didn't like gaming all that much and didn't want to own too many games, so "a" representative from a genre was enough for him! I guess I would say I am sort of like him, but I --LOVE-- gaming, I just don't like owning a lot of anything at once.

I would say I would make a topic asking the "Best Representative from Every Genre" but I think I tried already and there were way too many and some games were pretty hard to classify. If someone wanted to try again, that would be great, but it's not so clear cut and easy to do!

Ah okay. Well then: Must haves for each gen:

- Golf game

- Arcade racer (think Burnout)

- Baseball game

- NBA game

Everything else just takes care of itself really (FPS etc...), but I like to check in on these particular genres each gen not only becaues they scratch specific itches but also because they benchmark the generation performance-wise.

I have specific memories of trying to convince myself the DC version of Unreal was working great (for some reason I thought it was a necessary adjunct to my PC playing of UT.

And while I'm at it. FUCK the original Unreal Tournament on PC was and reamins amazing.  I played it online just over a year ago using the original install disc.

At least the Dreamcast versions of Quake and Unreal had online play, unlike the PS2 versions.
