Which version? Have you tied the other versions for controls?

I played both Nintendo versions: GC and Wii. I hated the Wii Remote controls. The GC controls worked well enough, but I prefer being able to move and shoot at the same time, which I can do in Halo. Happy

Oh, and RE4 helped start the whole QTE craze nonsense. Argh!

That was Shenmue. Poor Shenmue Sad

I vote RE4

And.... damnit, how could it come down to this. Argh, two of my favourites up against each other. I have to vote Galaxy.

Thats kind of the point. We are supposed to choose between our favorites. Be happy that its your favorites that made the finals. Shows that this site has some good taste.

I guess that was my problem with the competition, I could make a list of the greatest and make a list of the favourite and they would be different. Once I realised it was just favourite, I could live with it.

Wow, RE4 vs Galaxy. Both are incredible games. RE4 is probably the best paced game of all time, and even with the repetitive actions, the set pieces and level design kept things interesting all the way through to the end. It even had Mercenaries as well. The visuals were the only rival to HL2 at the time on consoles.

But then there is Galaxy and my vote has to go to this. Because it's like the perfect embodiment of the reasons I got into gaming. It sends you through this abstract, yet delightful, soaring, journey through space. Constantly inventive, often rousing, polished to perfection, easy to pick up and play. It's just fun and that's the reason it wins.

Yes its that. The usual played out complaint about RE4. When you find me a game where you can run and shoot at the same time that is as good as RE4 let me know. It's not that the control scheme is better than others, its that RE4 was made specifically for that control scheme and it worked. Any tweaks and it would be a different game.

Well if enough people don't like it, it's not played out. I disagree with them though.  I mean, we don't want games to be realistic, it just wouldn't be fun, but as someone who has to use a gun from time to time, always under stressful situations, the last thing you want to do when firing is be moving.  THE LAST THING.  So, bit of a weak argument, but if you want to simulate the tension involved in pulling a trigger and removing the life of the subject in front of you, one of the key aspects is stopping and thinking, going through your training and then executing in a methodical manner (which includes being stationary).

What I mean is that argument isn't a good one, its the same as someone saying "I don't like this cause you use A instead of B to jump", its personal preference. If there is a real control issue it would benefit the game to change it. In this case RE4 is specifically designed around that scheme, changing it would make it a different game. Whether people like the scheme or not is not the issue, it is about what worked for the game. You add the standard third person shooter controls to the game and RE4 is no longer the game so many love, the balance gets thrown off, the gameplay changes and now you have just another shooter. Can they design a game as well as RE4 with the standard control scheme, for sure, but RE4 is not that game.

You are not Jack, you are an imposter. I know Jack, I know he would never choose a happy colorful fun filled game. He would go for one where you blow off a bunch of heads, kill tons of evil bastards and save the President's daughter all in one day, cause that is what he does. He would chose RE4 and so do I.

What the hell?

I thought you were dead.

You obviously don't know me very well Tony. When I come home to my barren, lifeless existence I don't want to be shooting anymore. I just, want fun. And I can't exactly play RE4 in front of my daughter and her kid.

Having not played Mario Galaxy (yes, I know, I suck), I'm gonna have to go with RE4. Got me back into the Resident Evil series, as well as being one of the most incredibly satisfying action games ever made.

Hello guys. I know you think I am dead, I almost died. But as I drifted into the light I saw two giant hands, they rescued me and covered my injuries with the best rates in the industry. I knew I was in good hands. I have since devoted my life to promoting All-State. So guys, are you in good hands?

The stopping-to-shoot thing is only a part of the problem I had with RE4 controls. Arguing that it is an attempt to accurately represent in a realistic (or sort of) fashion the action of shooting is a bit lame in my opinion. Realism is the last thing the RE games strive for so no. I'd rather be cynical and consider that the most likely possibility is a decision made by a developer team with an exceedingly conservative approach.

The other part of my beef with controls are their unintuitiveness. The so-called "tank" controls were needed way back when the series started, but not anymore by the time RE4 was developed. Again, rather than thinking that it was some sort of attempt to increase tension or reflect the limitations of your character, I firmly believe it was a conscious decision rooted in a way too traditionalistic approach.

Fair enough. I'm glad you put quotes on tank controls though, most times when people talk about them they have no idea what they are talking about.

Vader was correct though, if you could run and gun in RE4 it would be a pretty shitty game.

So where ar we with the vote tally? SMG won yet?

RE4 has crappy controls that is a fact, unless you think controlling a person that just suffered a stroke is fun. Yes the game is still awesome, because the rest of the game is designed around the controls, that much is true. But guess what? It would be even more awesome if it was designed around controls that were not gimped. People say Leon controls like a tank. This is false, tanks can move and fire at the same time. Why do you need to press a button to run in a age with analog controls? Why do I have to turn left, until I face the correct direction, then press forward to move out of the fucking way? Oh and I did not realize that humans are incapable of shooting and moving at the same time. It is much too complex for your feeble brains to handle.

Look better controls allow better gameplay. For example Sin and Punishment on the N64 had crappy controls. Of course you may argue, with better control they game would be too easy. This is true in a sense. But guess what? The sequel has very intuitive controls. These controls allow the game developers to do much more with their level design. In the original you never had enemies attacking you from the foreground and background at the same time, while you are dodging and flying around. It simply was not possible. And quite frankly it is more fun, because more intuitive controls equals more fun.

Just controlling Mario is fun. Walking around, running in circles, cartwheeling, back flipping and triple jumping is simply fun. Add that fun to the awesome level design and you have fun x  fun. In other words Mario = fun squared. Just moving Leon around is not really fun. So RE4 is just fun. There is nothing in RE4 that compares to the awesome stunts you can do in Galaxy, to pull off an awesome shortcut, or just to show off to your friends.

And some of you raised the argument that RE4 was influential. This is true many games have been influenced by RE4. But you know what?! SMG was so good that all other developers just gave up. They won't even try, it is that good. Oh and Sonic Colours is clearly inspired by Galaxy and it is no coincidence that it is the best sonic game in years.

And the final point, Steel does not care for platformers, but he loves Galaxy. Aspro hates platformers, but he absolutely adores Galaxy. Seriously no one hates Galaxy.

So my vote is

Oh and no point arguing with me, I showed mathematical proof that SMG > RE4

SMG = fun^2

RE4 = fun

fun^2 > fun

ergo

SMG > RE4

strictly speaking, mathematically that wouldn't be true unless fun was a real number greater than 1.

A different control scheme in this case would change the gameplay, not make it better. Now if you want to say that any game that allows you to move and shoot at the same time is better than one that doesn't that is fine, you can feel that way. RE4 works because you can't move and shoot. Every single setpiece, all the enviornments, all the enemy AI is designed around the fact that you cannot move and shoot. You add move and shoot without changing the game and RE4 becomes a mess. Can they make a better game if they had full analog control, maybe, all I do know is that RE4 is one if not the best action game I have ever played, and it is not in spite of the controls, the controls were a big part of it.
