Online is as solid as Mario Kart.

Betting gets you tons of stars which can then in turn be used to buy more bots, more colors, more icons, collectibles, etc.

You can race, you can play poker...

Awesome!

Let me explain something to you.  The only shot in hell you'll have of hitting me with a hammer is when I pass you after I've lapped you.  You're going to be so far behind you might as well race with the unlockable snail bot.

How is the online as solid? Mario kart has the channel with so many features. Does Excitebots match the features, downloadable ghosts, rankings, scores, time trials etc. Easy friend code exchange via the channel messaging service etc?

How many players can race at once? Can you race championships or battles or anything?

I mean solid as in no lag.

You can download races to your friends so they can challenge your Star score for that race.

6 players can race at once.

There's no channel for EBs so no on the other stuff, but every race is like a battle with weapons to smash or slow the other players.

Can you race against any players online with matchmaking or is it a strictly friend code thang?

I'm surprised the game got an 8 out of Giant Bomb. I was sure that this would be the kind of game they despise over there.  Makes the game seem even more promising.

IIRC IGn were the only ones who gave the first game a fair shake. Everyone else liked it but said it was missing features like online and bit more length. Seems like they corrected the bits. Shame that this game has had no net coverage and Nintendo patented-- INSTA-release.

What marketing idiot came up with this great idea?

http://www.giantbomb.com/excitebots-trick-racing/61-25438/reviews/

You can see many of the ideas from Truck at work in Bots, some of them copied verbatim, but the rest of the game has been built up with an unhindered enthusiasm for high-speed chaos and a stance towards physics and reality in general that borders on contempt. It's a sugar-rush of a racing game, one that spends as much energy trying to distract you from the race as it does demanding that you give it all of your attention.

As time passes, it gets harder and harder to find games that can actually offer a surprise, so I found the ways in which Excitebots managed to catch me off-guard to be quite pleasing. Even amongst its arcade-style ilk, Excitebots isn't a very nuanced racing game, but it's loud, ridiculous, and crazy enough to be plenty of fun anyway.

4/5

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2009/04/wii-excitebots-is-missing-next-gen-features-still-fun.ars

That's where Excitebots: Trick Racing comes in. Why settle for fun when you can be insane?

For every feature that's missing, something ridiculously fun takes its place.

Online is a blast, especially with friends, but there is no battle mode or any variety other than simple races. Without online play, you're locked down to split-screen with two players.

Therein lies the rub. By going with crazy, animal-themed robots, the developers opened up a huge slew of possibilities. In the races, you'll be knocking down pins during impromptu bowling, you can knock a soccer ball into the goal, or you can glide off cliffs and rescue butterflies... all while racing your opponents. That kind of variety and creativity makes the races and the star-collecting aspect feel fresh and new, but there could have been so much more done with the concept. Doing all these challenges well and betting shrewdly online will net you a high number of stars quickly, but there simply isn't enough to buy with them.

Still, deforming the landscape to create a huge hill, pitching those in front of you hither and yon, that's fun. Hitting the boost right before a jump and then opening your wings and doing a few spins for stars, that's fun. Threading your bot between trees to nail a shortcut and grab a few bonus stars, that's fun. The game is wonderful, with a good variety of tracks. We only wish there was more of it.

I think Gerstmann reviewed the first one and despite giving it like 6.something it sounded like he really liked it and just had to wack on the low score because of no online.

So guys if I pick this up will I need to learn poker? Will I need to be good at poker? And what the fuck is poker? Unless we're talking about the Haptic Master.

Picked up the game last night.  Very good.  Not sure if it's better than Mario Kart yet, but I've yet to play online.  I will say that the Poker mode may be the most incredibly addicting mode I've ever played in a racing game.  I had a very hard time putting the game down once I started playing it.  And to answer your question Foolz, yes you will need to learn how to play poker if you want to play that mode.

I'm more of the Bots than the Exciiiiiiiiiite.  You got to have them both after all.
