Good movie too.
i personally loved it. ghost in the shell 2 is also interesting though it's not exactly a sequel.
speaking of non-ghibli things, have you guys all seen richard linkater's "waking life"? it's one of my favourite films of all time, and even though it isn't exactly animated (it was shot on digital video and then he had several artists paint over it to give it an animated look) i always thought it has many of the (admittedly vague) ghibli qualities
Now that I've watched a bit of Ponyo in high quality, wow you can really see how this is handrawn and has a very simple look at times, almost too simple. After the wizardry in Howl and Spirited away it's something of a departure. Almost like a halfway house between something like Yamada's and traditional Ghibli.
Some of the backgrounds are almost like detailed paintings.
The first 5 minutes of this film, wow. They could section it off and have it as a short film and it could win the oscar for short film.

Yeah.
Now I've watched a bit more of Ponyo in high quality, I have to say, whilst its consistently beautiful there are a few hiccups here and there.
At times the character models seen very simplistic. Also a few of the backgrounds are almost like picture book sketches that have been coloured it.
It's not sort of glossy and accomplished like Howl and Spirited Away which use digital production.

Yeah.
That's old (the latest one, though), I think. It was a tele movie.
Okay watched Ponyo from start to finish last night. Grinning from ear to ear.
One of the best. All I can complain about is the sometimes too unfinished backgrounds in places and a strange sort of wedding scene between two 5 year olds at the end.
SON OF A ******
Suddenly the same site I bought Ponyo off lists a hong kong edition for $22 aka £13
For July 28th release, region 3
F******* bastards list the japan $55 version for months to rip people off when the HK edition is out 3 weeks later so they can rip people off.
There was no pre-order or indication of a HK version.
AND they put a stipulation on the pre-orders for the $50 version, no returns or order cancellations. WHat bullshit. I have used that site for years but feel severely ripped off now.
