When Ocarina of Time came out I searched that little maze for the Kokiri Sword for an HOUR!! I crawled by it easily a hundred times, but I just never turned the right direction and eventually had to go use a FAQ or asked for help on a message board.
And my first notable "doh" came from Final Fantasy. Despite reading about it in Nintendo Power and the huge instruction manual that came with the game, I didn't realize I wasn't equipping my weapons. So for about 3 hours I couldn't figure out why I couldn't beat Garland and was having such a hard time with the regular battles.
The first time I played FFVII I thought you had to beat the Midgar Zolom snake before going through the cave. I had to grind my ass off for HOURS until I was able to survive long enough to absorb Beta and beat it. Only after killing it it dawned on me that it respawned, and that you could just tip toe your way around it or ride a chocobo.
At least I was pretty powerful afterwards. I leveled up so much I essentially broke the game for the better part of that first disc.

i did the same but i did it by choice as learning the Beta spell at that stage obliterates just about anything for a very long time to come. i think you are meant to hire a chocobo and run past it
