New concept art for Project Needlemouse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This one is official – and this Badnik will also be appearing in the game!

Everyone has the rest of the week and the weekend to create and share your pieces. We’ll also post the best of the submissions here on the blogs for you all to view / laugh at / be totally amazed by later.

In closing, some parting thoughts that expand on some comments we made in the last blog:

Speed is something that is not given; but rather earned through dedication. Speed is not found by simply pushing a boost button, but by building momentum. It is the reward for skill in the face of difficult challenges – this kind of speed is the most exhilarating, not only because it is fast, but because of the pure perfection such speed exemplifies. This is the truth of the original Sonic games – and this is the truth of Project Needlemouse.

Good luck, everyone!

Do you not understand, Sonic games have changed since the Genesis game. It stopped being about momentum and more about magical speed. This game will bring it back, this game will be like classic Genesis Sonic!

Yeah I guess. It didn't take much momentum to reach top speed though.

I played Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles yesterday, my god these games are so amazing. I have always been hard on Sonic 3 cause it went away from the fast pacing of Sonic 2 to a more slow platforming focused game. The levels are gigantic, almost too long at times. The game is still fantastic though.  I followed it up with Sonic and Knuckles, which I didn't play much of, I forgot how much better this game was than Sonic 3. S&K has a much better balance of the Sonic 2 style gameplay with the Sonic 3 sized levels. It was all supposed to be one giant game so I guess it makes sense for S&K to have the better stages. The final level where you flip upside down is soooo amazing.

While playing these games again I am reminded of how there is nothing like them. There are a bunch of Mario clones out there, but there isn't much of anything that is like Sonic. I have also noticed how far away we have gone from the look of Sonic, which had many organic levels and then level with futuristic robot tech, it made for some of the most beautiful platforming landscapes. Hopefully Needlemouse can bring this all back. They have one hell of a task on their hand cause making these games are not easy.

Yes I mean the past.

I wish someone would clone Galaxy Sad

And no that Chinese game does not count. That one is exactly the same.

How many clones of Mario did we get?! I remember there being lots of platform games back in the day, but I can't remember most of them. They were all inferior clones.

That's very true. I think it was probably harder to do the speed based gameplay of sonic. Whereas with mario you could get a mascot type animal and make him walk and jump about fairly easily.

Are you playing these on cart or on the PS3 Sonic Collection?  It's rainy here today, I think I'm going to break that Sonic Collection open and give some a try.

Its more like GG said, not direct clone but games where you had a mascot dude and he basically went across the stage and bounced on enemies heads and had platforming obstacles. Most platformers followed the Mario structure than the huge multipath, track like design of Sonic games.

To ilustrate my point on the structures of the games, this is a typical map from a Mario stage:
