Sonic was a legitimate hero on the Genesis/ Megadrive, did decent work on the SEGA CD and Saturn and was above average on the Dreamcast. Since SEGA stopped making their own hardware, Sonic has not been great, but imagine how Mario would be after Nintendo exited the hardware arena? Jesus -- Nintendo would have games with him blowing people as a mini-game (with motion controls).
Now that would be a Wii game hardcore gamers could get behind.
Nintendo already said the day they stop making hardware is the day they stop making games. And even in their darkest Gamecube hour Nintendo still made a profit, so them getting out of business any time soon is unlikely at best. Sega money problems was their own doing and they only got themselves to blame for that.
Sonic started his decline when he went 3D. The last great Sonic game (not counting Sonic Rush) was Sonic and Knuckles.
So in short, Sonic started sucking because Sega started sucking. That suckitude cause Sega to go out of the hardware business. Not the other way around.
- I was not suggesting that Nintendo would ever go out of the hardware business.
- I was not suggesting that Sonic sucking caused SEGA to go out of business.
- I agree that Sonic started sucking because SEGA started sucking.
What I am saying is that you can't dump Sonic's back catalog just because he sucks today.
hardware smardware
the real question is, when will Nintendo leave the Hanafuda card business
100+ years and still going
I don't think Mario would change at all just because they stopped making hardware. And Nintendo is full of it saying they wouldn't make games anymore if that happened.....so what WOULD they do? Make cars?
I actually think in some ways Nintendo would be better without hardware; I mean they'd have the entire hardcore fanbase at their fingertips so they could profit off more hardcore games. But this is off topic.
BTW, I thought Sonic Adventure was a really good game....though its not a game I ever wanted to play again after finishing it.

Why not count Sonic Rush? Sonic Rush 1 & 2 and Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 are all very good 2D platformers. Anyone who likes the MegaDrive games ought to try those. Don't miss out because they are handheld games.
other than those in recent years i got sonic and the secret rings which was a big waste and it never kept me interested enough to play past the first few levels

I think they're just kind of saying that if they couldn't be at the top anymore that they wouldn't compete. Like athletes, when you've been king of the world nobody wants to just be be an average player. And the hardware side seems really important to the company.
If the company got to the point where they were in such trouble then that would mean their software wasn't selling millions anymore and nobody would care if they were third party or not.
But I'm amazed that Sega hasn't managed to kill Sonic off with some of the sub par games. That just means there's always opportunity for some great games in the future.
Sega is still fine, they are nowhere at the level they used to be but they can still make incredible games and they are now one of the best publishers in the business (and yes they can owe that to Platinum Games).

I don't know? Perhaps what they have been making for a century now! Hanafuda cards!
Dvader said:The problem with Sonic is simple, it's hard to get it to work in 3D. Also the decline of Sonic Team didn't help. Now you guys feel there are no good 3D Sonic games, I disagree.
The problem of Sonic is simple, Sega is incompetent. I would argue that Sonic would work better in 3D than 2D. Give Sonic to Tokyo EAD and see what happens.
Oh and Sega did start sucking. How else would you call the 32X, Sega CD, Saturn and all the other failures. Sega 'died' for a reason and it was 100% their own fault.

Look at the news page. Yes its download only and yes it will live up to the hype though I dont know what that hype is. To some the hype is simply dont suck. To others it is be as good as the Genesis.

Those are mutually exclusive.
