You guys should stop piling on Vader for his Hedgehog love. Sonic was a legitimate hero on the Genesis/ Megadrive, did decent work on the SEGA CD and Saturn and was above average on the Dreamcast. Since SEGA stopped making their own hardware, Sonic has not been great, but imagine how Mario would be after Nintendo exited the hardware arena? Jesus -- Nintendo would have games with him blowing people as a mini-game (with motion controls).

Why not count Sonic Rush? Sonic Rush 1 & 2 and Sonic Advance 1, 2 and 3 are all very good 2D platformers. Anyone who likes the MegaDrive games ought to try those. Don't miss out because they are handheld games.

I think they're just kind of saying that if they couldn't be at the top anymore that they wouldn't compete. Like athletes, when you've been king of the world nobody wants to just be be an average player. And the hardware side seems really important to the company.
If the company got to the point where they were in such trouble then that would mean their software wasn't selling millions anymore and nobody would care if they were third party or not.
But I'm amazed that Sega hasn't managed to kill Sonic off with some of the sub par games. That just means there's always opportunity for some great games in the future.
