In truth it does look more like a 16bit game than a NES game
EG too, but everyone else loves it. I tried watching a gameplay video before, gave up a few minutes in. I can't get the 8bit nostalgia.
Somewhere up in the heavens, the Gods of Gaming saw one of their children suffering and said: "Lo! One of our most loyal and faithful is weary in spirit and tiring of life. What can we deliver unto the world to brighten his mood and return a light of hope to his soul?"
...and they created Shovel Knight.
...and it was good.
"Make it equal parts Mega Man, CastleVania and Ninja Gaiden. Throw in some Ironsword and Duck Tales for good measure!"
"So it was said. So it shall be done!"
"He will say to himself 'Was this game made just for me?!' as the frown etched on to his face fades and a tear forms in his eye, and he will play..."
"...and play."
"...and play some more."
"Memories will flood as the child within re-awakens and a lighthearted joy will kindle and grow. His burdens will lessen and a long missing smile will return."
"...and Phantom_Leo will be reborn!"
The only things missing is Fabio's tits.
This game makes me so happy, I would gift it to each and every one of you...
...if Nintendo made gifting possible again...
Nintendo took away gifting? WTF? That's the one cool online thing they had the other companies didn't.

That's why I don't even bother with GS reviews anymore. They seem to be going with this "We are tougher on games" angle, and frankly I'm not buying it.

Kind of like you and The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

This is the best thing to come from this game.

Exactly. If it can rekindle this level of excitement at such a time of crisis and doubt... It makes me happy!
Like the penis of the Phoenix, Leo has risen!!!
Can't wait to get some time to check this out. I was a little worried that this wouldn't be much more than just a merely good game wrapped in a lot of NES nostalgia, but that doesn't seem to be the case. And hell, I've seen no shortage of people saying that this is the best game they've played in 2014 (not that this has been a real good year for gaming thus far, but who'd be an asshole and bring that up?)
It's been a good year for gaming. If I can fall in love with a kart racing game and put in dozens of hours playing it, it's been a good year.
how is the difficulty of this game?
I love Kart as much as the next guy (40+ hours of play and I got it a week after everyone else), but the year is half over and aside from Kart we've had 4 big games released this year, and there's not much more on the horizon for this summer. This is shaping up to be an average year at best when you look at it across the board.
Of course... we do have two Harvest Moon games due for launch. So it could end up being epic.
Well, it's definitely not the greatest year for gaming, but still good. I've been busy with Donkey Kong, South Parktick of Truth, and WatchDogs.
I'm trying to talk myself into not buying Shovel Knight tonight. I'm still digging Mario Kart... I've just started playing Wind Waker... I don't need it. But damn... it's calling me like a siren.
Comes out today on Wii U, 3DS and PC!
IGN gives it a 9.0

Shovel Knight is my favorite game of 2014 so far, and a true testament to the power of the old-school. Whether you were weaned on an NES like I was, or don’t yet know what you missed in a time before you were born, Shovel Knight is an absolute must-play.
WOW!!! This is basically a love letter to NES games. It borrows elements from Mega Man mostly, but also Duck Tales, Zelda 2, Mario, Castlevania, with enough new content for it to have its own identity.
Its also 6-8 hours long with one playthrough. This is not some tiny indie game you buy on steam that is fun for two hours. This is a full meaty game.
