Enslaved comes to mind. As does the final post-credits scene of ICO (second play through).

I agree about Enslaved, it's very emotional at many spots. Lost Odyssey, The Darkness, Heavy Rain and Fragile Dreams are the most recent ones I've played.

Do JRPGs count?  If so, almost every one of them I can think of.

I really appreciate the lack of sentimentality in Nintendo games generally (which I guess is why Metroid fans were peeved off by how Team Ninja handled Samus/Metroid)

No one is going to believe this, but every single Disgaea game, for as off the wall, humorous and over the top they ALL are, there is ALWAYS, WITHOUT FAIL, UNDOUBTEDLY a human, touching and very sentimental twist to the story. Each and every one, though they focus on Demons and being "Evil" ...they go out of their way to show how "human" we all are and how everything comes down to someone's point of view on things. It's a reoccuring theme throughout all of them and --ONE-- of the reasons I --LOVE-- the entire series!

I'd completely believe that.  There has to be something more to series for it to be as beloved as it is.

You can tell from the artwork the game has that bent as well (I've got some of the Manga and an artbook of it).

I guess I'm used to the word being used in a derogatory way, meaning soppy.

Hmm ... how about Fire Emblem?  There's no discussion or tears about it but you have to deal with permanent deaths and shit and move on.  It's pretty emotional.

Or Pikmin.  It broke my heart every time one of my Pikmins suffered or died and yet I had to keep sending them fight for me with their lives.  Pretty heavy stuff.

These are probably not what you expect to hear about but I think they are examples of how games can invoke emotion in ways different to movies and not by trying to emulate movies

Give them a shot, Heavy Rain is basically an interactive drama (A very depressing one to be fair) with some stellar visuals, The Darkness arguably haves one of the best plots I've seen in a FPS, Lost Odyssey is a top notch JRPG with a fantastic story and visuals and Fragile Dreams is one of the more interesting post-apocalyptic games I've ever played.

Now... considering I just mentioned Fragile Dreams and Enslaved, I should also mention I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream (The most depressing game I've ever played. After beating it I felt numb and I've seen Cannibal Holocaust, Salo and A Serbian Film, it's THAT dark) and I Am Alive (The interactions with the NPC's can be extremely emotional. There's a woman that asks you if you have food and if you don't give it to her... after backtracking to the same area you can see that she hung herself)

^Vade, I have been watching Mrs. Aspro play ME3. It's like a completely different game.  I usually say, "I hate that fucking game" about once every 10 minutes while she plays it (as various old favorites turn up).

I think I am the only one here that actually finished the damn game. There are some touching moments in the game though.

69 + hours, lol. More like 10000000000000 hours. Nyaa

That big moment at the start was pretty great. I am sure the end is also just as good but it will be a while before I get back into it.

Actually there are many more touching moments and wtf twists in the game.

The second half of the game are more dungeon like. Not Zelda dungeons but RPGs dungeons. Goes by a lot faster with bigger plot twist than the part before. Then the game opens up with lots op optional near end quests where you can choose to talke on monsters that outlevel you.

The end game is again a big RPG dungeon.
