In your game playing history (but mostly when you were a kid) have you ever played a game and gone, "Ummm, I don't think I should be doing this?"

I can only think of two examples, the first was in Wolfenstein 3D.  When I was killing guards, at the time it seemed so real, that it felt a little dirty.

The other time was when I tried to play Rule of Rose. Some of the imagery in there is a little, umm, well lets say there is a lot of school uniforms.  I think there was also some similarly creepy imagery in a game for the Xbox called Xyanide (your enemy takes the form of a young girl).

I played a lot of Leisure Suit Larry when I was a teenager so it's tough for me to find anything in a game that makes me feel perverted.

Violence on the other hand can still bother me in a lot of games.  First time I played Vice City I actually felt very guilty on one of the assasination missions where you had to kill some guy's wife and make it look like an accident.  That really bothered me and I stopped playing the game for a while because of it.  And I never felt comfortable just killing random people. . . except for the Haitians because I just don't plain like them.

No, and this has been an issue I've wondered about for a long time.  The whole concept of age-appropriateness I can't really nail down the justification.  I wrote on a blog about it way back in '07.

Tell me to get back to rewriting this site so it's not horrible on mobile

Yep, I was playing Half-Life and after not long I thought to myself: "why the am I playing this complete and utter crap when I could be playing Operation Flashpoint or GTA?"

Unfortunately my self-censoring ways failed me when I got The Orange Box.

I think a game I felt was inappropiate, or a recent two games would be Madworld and House of the Dead overkill. I mean I'm fine with it and laugh my ass off. But I'm conscious of playing it with others around, especially relatives. Having to turn off commentary in Madworld for instance or downing the volume in overkill.

The first time I played Goldeneye on N64, I snuck up behind a guard, and shot him in the back of the head. The way his head lurched forward, and then he fell to his knees before falling onto the floor was kind of sickening to watch. For a brief moment, it felt a bit too real for me.

Recently, Little king story. When you have to kill a "babysitter Onii" as the name implies, it's an adult onii with a baby onii on his back. When you hit it, the baby starts to cry. I thought it was not really appropriate, so after that I avoided quests that suggested to kill some more.

No me, but a friend who was disturbed by the "boomer" in House of the dead overkill. The bog belly and the way it walked reminded him too much of a pregnant woman.

Awww, how cute.

I don't even remember it. I guess the first time Howser acted like a dictator and said something like we must cleanse the world of their impurity or something like that. That was a little.... eh?

Funny though.

Well, I told you, you were supposed to use the FINGER to play the game... BUT NOOO...

It's no small wonder everyone in the game room gave you strange looks!

Seriously, that's the last time I take you anywhere!

Wow -that would actually bother me, especially playing it after some of  the current affairs/history books I've been reading.

I still can't believe that thing. I swear I saw part of a japanese show where they were sticking things up people's asses - or at least pretending to do so. Anybody seen this?

Yeah that sounds a little unsettling.

For me I always felt kind of bad about killing innocent bystanders in the Grand Theft Auto games.

Also welcome to the VG Press. It's always nice to see new folks here. Hope you stick around and enjoy the place.

yeah as a policy I don't kill anyone in GTA games unless it is part of a mission.  If they throw themselves in front of my car, that's their issue.

But then, I also use parking spaces appropriately in games as well.

You're not playing it right.

Firstly you save. Then you go out and cause absolute mayhem and see how long you can outrun the cops. The best thing to do is to put a getaway car next to a building. Get on the roof and snipe people, then when the helicopter comes use a rocket launcher. When you run out of bullets, jump off the building, get the car and see if you can escape.

And in Chinatown wars, get in the tank situated in the airport and kick some ASS.

Yeah, my opinion is wrong Sad

In the early days of GTA I did unsaved mellees for fun, or snipe for hours, but it gets old after a while.
