It's not entirely clear.

“The basic idea is that bashing things with a sword is fun. So we plan to have as much destructibility in the environments as we can.”

“We’re also building a gameplay mechanic around destructible objects.....but I can’t say more than that at the moment.”

“…Defining Red Steel 2 at a high level was easy. Taking all of the steps that were required to get to where I could say what I just said about the Wild West was really hard. We are, in some ways, attempting to redefine the franchise while retaining its roots. If you’re working with a movie license or a long-standing franchise, there are all these rules and constraints. It’s different for us. We are blessed with the opportunity to expand on something and take it in a cool new direction. But it’s hard.

Given the cartoon look they could have had decapitations and limbs being sliced off. Bloodless of course.

But they could have put some blood it, tiny splashes, a stain here or there.

(No jokes folks)

"The graphics don't ever approach gritty realism, but rather are very intentionally crafted to be stylistic if not recognizably artistic. There's a cel-shaded quality to the characters and worlds and certain particle systems like flames and wind seem to have an almost hand-drawn, comic book quality to them that is simply very pleasing to the eye. Just as impressive to me is that Red Steel 2 is locked at 60 frames per second. Locked. There's not so much as a hiccup in the E3 demo of the game. It's quite a feat since the game features remarkably detailed environments skinned with crisp textures and even spits out scenarios with five or six swordsmen attacking simultaneously, all of them running around with fluid animation. Shortly into my demo, I could not help but draw technical parallels to Metroid Prime 3, which also looks amazing and runs beautifully. It's as though Ubisoft analyzed everything about Retro's engine ad then simply copied it . "We actually shifted to the Lyn Engine, which is internal Ubisoft tech. It's being used for a lot of projects and being developed across multiple platforms, but was originally developed specifically for Wii. We were able to start over with an engine that from the beginning gave us a real head start," said Vandenberghe. This, by the way, is the same engine powering the equally pretty Rabbids Go Home."

I just don't see how someone couldn't like this game, just based on the visuals alone.  I just hope the gameplay holds up.

Well I do not know how well the final release will turn out, but this must be one of the coolest games ever. You knock a guy in the air, jump up and knock him down again, while shooting him on the way down! Fuck yeah.

Well, as a general rule I try not to get too excited about previews.  It's not often you read one that's anything less than enthusiastic.

Amen to that. For awhile every game on GS was called innovative before release, then called derivitive afterwards! LOL

i agree.  the art of this game looks fantastic.  is no one else reminded of the look of the most recent prince of persia game?  (is it the same ubisoft team making this?).  the colour contrasts, the thick lines, the effects are all very similar.

the fact that this game apparently plays well is at this point a nice bonus Nyaa

It reminds me of Stranger's Wrath actually. Sci-fish Western setting. Obviously a lot less kooky, though.

I will be buying this game. I'm totally digging the art style, and the video of it in motion sold me on the game, it looks insanely good locked up at 60 fps. Ubi got my money on this title that shows nothing but quality and hard work put into it.

Yeah, looks like it. Must be a recent trend. Xblades (a shitty DMC clone with a girl in thong instead of a metrosexual demon hunter) has cutscenes like that as well.

I believe the overall look of this game is cleaner than PoP's. More defined in its shapes and lines.

 Awesome.

Even I'm suprised at how this one has turned out. Now I want a new play control version of the original game too.
