Rewatching the X-Men movies for today, not 3 thats an F.

X-Men-2000.jpg

X-Men

This is a really rough film. Outside of Wolverine, some Prof X and magneto there isnt much character development at all. Storm might as well be an extra. Cyclops does little outside of play off of Wolverine. The brotherhood of evil mutants is like a cartoon group of badguys. The action is really rough. Some of the dialogue is awful as well. It was the first superhero team movie and started this whole super hero movie bonanza so it gets some credit. Everything with Wolverine is great at least.

X2%20Poster.jpg

X2

An absolutely brillaint film that has not aged a day. This is the perfect X-Men movie as it nails exactly what X-Men is about and gives every character a moment to shine. It has a collection of the best scenes of the entire series, nothing beats the Nightcrawler scene, the mansion attack, Magneto's escape. Every character even Mystique gets certain lines, many times just one that perfectly defines why they fight for their fight. It goes full on X-Men geek mode with all sorts of cameos and the Phoenix tease. Brian Cox is the perfect villain, Lady Deathstrike vs Wolverine is one of the best fights in the series. Magneto is so much better in this film, that swagger and his talk with Pyro, you can totally see how others will follow him. His final act is so horrible, letting his friend die so the entire human race could be killed, so brutal. One of the best superhero movies ever made.

X-Men First Class

Another fantastic super hero movie with incredible energy. The action sequences are full blown super power porn, does it better than any X-Men movie before. The acting of Fassbender and McAvoy is excellent. Basically everything with Magneto and Xavier is top notch, great way to explore why they are on both sides of the mutant issue. The cast of X-Men though is lacking, they are mostly like third tier X-men and aren't that interesting outside Beast and Mystique, and even then they are not the characters we know, they are quite different from the norm. Still this movie is extremely enjoyable to watch.

Speaking of this, I just got back from a critics screening of X-Men first class. Pretty damned good. Pretty much right up there with X2. Without spoiling anything Quicksilver completely steals the movie, Blink is hot, and 1973 Professor Xavier has apparently stolen my look. I swear to god that's me.

You mean days of future past. Just saw it, I don't think it was as good as X2 but still great. Quicksilver was amazing!

X-Men Days of Future Past - USA - Superhero

It didn't turn out to be my dream come true X-Men movie but it is a great movie. It has amazing moments and a good storyline. Great character moments throughout. It is a crowd pleaser, its funny when it needs to be, emotional when it needs to be. With some great acting all around. I think this movie lacking a central villain hurts the flow a bit. I loved the stuff in the future. i felt the stuff in the past was in need of a character or two. X2 remains the standard for X-Men movies to me but I bet this may end up manys favorite X-Men movie.

Nice review. I saw Days of Future Past, did not like the 70s setting. Prefer the original team/actors. 70s walking hairy Prof X has to go. Good movie overall, A- maybe. Needs something more to kick it up the ass into overdrive. Quicksilver was cool although looks like a giant douche. The young actors just pale in comparison to their elders. No one wants skinny Beast in a 70s suit.

The Fly - USA 1986

Plot: A scientist invents a teleportation machine which is in its final testing and refinement stages.  You put something in one booth, it disappears and it appears in the second booth.  He also meets a journalist to whom he promises the story of his invention and who also becomes his girlfriend.  One evening when drunk he decideds to do the ultimate test and put himself through the machine.  At the moment he does this a fly gets in the booth with him.  As he reappears in the other booth the fly is nowhere to be seen.  We later find out that the machine effectively spliced his DNA with that of the fly and basically turned him into a giant fly.

Review:  I had very fond memories of this film.  I remember talking about it with friends for days.  Well, I'll just say that it hasn't aged well.  Jeff Goldbloom is still quite brilliant but everything else just looks cheap.  The fly costumes and the make-up are kind of ridiculous.  The plot (if you can call it that) is extremely simplistic (but in fairness it was a remake of a 50ies film so not much expected in this department).  I still kind of love it as something from my childhood but I don't know if I could recommend it to anyone in this day and age (but I hope most of you have seen it already)

Fantastic Mr Fox - USA-UK 2009 - Wes Anderson

Plot: An anthropomorphic fox, voiced by George Clooney, and his family enter an adventure of trying to survive the wrath of three "evil" large scale farmers whom Mr Fox pissed off by repeatedly stealing from their farms and humimilated.  They have to dig deeper and deeper underground and find ways to deal with every new plan and strategy the farmers employ to extinguish them with their ultimate goal of ... survival.

Review: Wes Anderson's feauture films already had this kind of doll house/stage set type look to them, so this type of stop-motion animation is a very natural fit for him.  Roald Dahl's story also has a very similar sense of humor and whim also found in WA's original scripts, so once again this all feels very natural.  The film looks great.  The animals and environments all give this kind of old fashion rustic English country vibe which suits the film very well.  The voice work is also very competent.  So, it ticks a lot of boxes, it's fun to watch, but it doesn't have any of the nerdy heart-felt moments or random laugh-out-loud situations associated with most of his feauture films.

The Royal Tenenbaums - USA 2001 - Wes Anderson

Plot: An estranged husband/father/grandfather tries to win back his family's affection/love/respect by fabricating a story about having terminal cancer and just a few weeks to live.  It kind of works at first, and then it doesn't, and then it does again ... sort of.  Each member of the family is very neurotic, psychotic and fucked up in their own ways and in their relationships with each other.

Review:  This is one of Wes Anderson's most well-received films but it's personally my least favourite of his.  After the beginning which shows the early days of each of the Tenenbaum children as young prodigies and is really well done and fun, the film then just drags when it comes to the present day.  The plot (if you can call it that) is just too thin and very little happens.  The characters (with the exception of Ben Stiller and Bill Murray) are just over-exagerrated and not at all likeable.  I don't know this may come across as weird but all the things I normally like about Wes Anderson's films are things which annoy me about TRTs.

Fußball WM 1954 (can't remember the rest of the title).

An extended highlights package in the form of a feature film: highlights interspersed with skits involving a boy trying to make it to Bern for the final...eventually hitchhiking. By pure luck he wasn't raped to death en route, but did suffer other various comical misfortunes. The dubbing is full of one-take errors, and the fidelity of the footage is exceptional: the difference high fidelity video makes to the apparent skill of the footballers is immense. One picks up so many more details than are visible on the awful YouTube highlights that are easiest to find elsewhere...and the footage of the crowd is equally impressive, and can't so easily be found on YouTube. Of particular note is the train station atop the stadia incline, with people standing mere metres away from the locomotive and watching the match. The skits also bring to mind one aspect of The Miracle of Bern...which means it did a good job of pastiching? Oh, and a lot of women are watching the football, too; why wouldn't they be?

Godzilla - USA - Disaster film

A well made Godzilla movie that doesn't balance the human drama with the sheer badassness of monsters fighting all that well. Everything with the humans was boring and uneventful. Everything with Godzilla was incredible and jaw dropping. It does have some great moments but it is never consistent. In terms of effects and spectacle it is worth seeing. It is no where near the crapfest that was Godzilla 98 and has a lot more in common with classic Godzilla, except that this is a movie worth watching.

Rating: C+

Saw it. I actually prefer the 98 Godzilla, it was more entertaining. This movie is okay but there's way too much human stuff which is just boring. I liked two aspects of the movie, Godzilla laser breath, finally. And they seemed to have made the character model based on the old 70s movies, he looked chubby and cute, I wanted to hug him. He also at one point looked like he was going to break out some karate, but alas, that never materialised.

I saw two movies this weekend.

MV5BMTcwNzAxMDU1M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwNDE2NTU1MTE@._V1_SX214_AL_.jpg

First was 22 Jump Street which was not as good as the first one. The movie breaks the 4th wall a little too much, it is very self aware that it is a sequel that does the exact same thing as the first. It knows this, it makes fun of this and still does it, so it doesn't really work. Also the first movie was a funny take on how high school is now compared to when we went, this movie has no such take with college. The villains are not as interesting, the gags are not as funny. There is one scene that is pure brilliance that had me in tears though. So it is still entertaining but simply not as good as the first movie.

Rating: B-

I also saw How to Train Your Dragon 2, holy shit what a movie!!!!! This is everything I go to the movies for. Forget that it is a "kids" movie, this movie isn't making stupid jokes, it isn't even that funny. It is a straight up adventure movie with a great coming of age story that hits every emotional beat perfectly. This movie gave me those goosebumps you get when everything in a movie is working perfectly, I am totally emotionally invested, I am awed, I am excited. This is a sequel that does not try to do the same thing,  it can stand alone even if you never saw the first one.

The villain is fantastic. The action is mind blowing. This had the spirit of the best Pixar movies of old. Pixar has been in a downward trend lately, this movie has the feel of an Incredibles and Finding Nemo. It stands with the greatest cartoon movies ever for me. I absolutely loved it. I will say it starts a bit slow but once it gets going, wow.

I sometimes rehost my images, but it's such a pain in the ass that I don't bother most of the time. Too much work. Hotlinked images work well enough, as long as the site you are hotlinking isn't blocking the image outright, of course.

Its still a Transformers movie, don’t expect any different. But I felt this movie had a more robot focus than any of the others. The new autobots were fantastic, John Goodman in particular was great. Wahlberg and Tucci are great in this, the rest not so much. The level of destruction is RIDICULOUS, how the hell did China let Bay blow up half their country. If anything he is a master of destruction and this movie is still pure eye candy. I enjoyed the more sci-fi elements, the introduction of a larger cosmic group,I liked the idea of Galvatron.

But like other bayformer movies it has some really really stupid shit. They made these new decepticons out to be super badass and John Goodman kills like 40 of them by himself. Why was Optimus driving around when he had a jet pack!?

Eh whatever, I enjoyed it. Way better than 2, on the level with the other two.
